Sweetwater's Fire Chief retires after 23 years of service Sweetwater's Fire Chief, Grant Madden, announced Wednesday that he is retiring after 23 years of serving the city. Chief Madden served the City of Sweetwater in the Fire Department & Ambulance Service for a total of 23 years, 15 as Chief. "I'd like to thank Chief Madden for his many years of loyal and dedicated service to the Sweetwater community and our fire department," City Manager David A. Vela said. "On behalf of the city council and city staff, we wish him well in his future endeavors. He will be sorely missed." Chief Madden's last day will be January 3, 2022. KTAB-TV CBS 32 ABILENE Lower Colorado River Authority Awards $50,000 Grant For New Fire Training Center in Coleman With help from a $50,000 grant from the Lower Colorado River Authority, the Coleman Fire Department will open a live-fire training facility where firefighters from across the area can gain valuable hands-on experience fighting fires in a controlled setting. The Community Development Partnership Program grant, paired with matching funds of $19,000, will pay for the construction of a single-story, steel "burn building" that can be configured for a variety of training exercises. Coleman Fire Chief Jimmy Watson said the training facility likely will be built close to the city's airport, making it easy for Coleman firefighters to train in the area while still being able to respond to emergency calls that arise during training sessions. "As soon as I received the email about the grant, I pushed it out to everyone and my phone blew up," Watson said. COLEMAN TODAY Garland ambulance patients now have more choices about which hospital they're taken to Patients transported by Garland ambulances now have more choices about where they receive healthcare. In most situations, patients will have several options of nearby medical facilities they can choose from. Previously, they were transported to the closest medical facility. Fire chief Mark Lee briefed Garland City Council on the new policy at a work session on Dec. 6. The issue was reviewed by the city's public safety committee. Garland first responders aimed to ensure that response times didn't increase. That's why they took patients to the nearest hospital. But that created concerns for some patients, Lee said at the council meeting. "We were hearing that folks were not happy with where they were going, and potentially concerned about their medical records," he said. The city wanted to give residents more say in the matter. Patients can choose where they go, as long as it's relatively close and medically appropriate, Lee said. DALLAS MORNING NEWS - METERED SITE 1 killed in fiery wreck involving 2 semitrucks in Martin County VIDEO: Two semis crashed on eastbound I-20, just east of the FM 829 overpass, between mile markers 152 and 153, according to the Texas Department of Transportation. Images and videos from viewers show the trucks on fire. The eastbound lane was closed and traffic was being diverted to the service road near mile marker 143 in Midland County. The accident was also slowing the flow of westbound traffic. There has been one confirmed fatality due to the accident, according to Martin County Sheriff Brad Ingram. The Texas Department of Public Safety is investigating. The crash was cleared overnight around 4:00 a.m. on December 9. KWES-TV NBC 9 ODESSA Governor Abbott, TDEM Deploy Wildfire Response Resources In Panhandle, South Plains Governor Greg Abbott today directed the Texas Division of Emergency Management (TDEM) to ready and activate resources ahead of elevated conditions for fire danger in the Texas Panhandle and South Plains. These resources will support local officials' response to wildfires if fires exceed local capabilities. The Texas A&M Forest Service warns that wildfire-prone conditions caused by underlying drought aligned with dryness, increased wind speeds, freeze cured grasses, an abundance of vegetation on the landscape, and elevated to critical fire weather are expected to become progressively more hazardous in the Panhandle and South Plains beginning Thursday, December 9th through Friday, December 10th and potentially through the weekend. OFFICE OF THE TEXAS GOVERNOR Austin Fire Department crews respond to diesel fuel spill, I-35 upper deck closed for cleanup A diesel fuel spill on the southbound upper deck of I-35 and the frontage road in central Austin is causing traffic slowdowns. The Austin Fire Department said they responded to 4300 N I-35 upper deck southbound around 10:51 a.m. Crews warned drivers about the road being closed while they clean up the spill. They also said the leak is affecting the traffic on the southbound frontage road. They are recommending drivers use the lower deck as an alternate route. VIDEO: Building that once housed adult day care in Mississippi goes up in flames A massive fire destroyed a vacant building in South Jackson. The fire was reported about 9 p.m. Wednesday at what was once the ANCOR Adult Daycare on Robinson Road. The flames were so intense that part of the building collapsed. Deputy Chief Cleotha Sanders said the business was not operating and there was no power to the building. Firefighters stayed at the scene overnight putting out hot spots, Sanders said. The cause of the fire has not been determined. No injuries were reported. WAPT-TV ABC 16 JACKSON EMS not considered ‘essential' in South Carolina, but proposed bill would change that The pandemic has shown how critical emergency medical services are across the country. But in South Carolina and most other states, EMS is not classified as an "essential service," as law enforcement and fire services are. While those services have been part of the US in some fashion since colonial times, EMS is much younger, established in many areas of the country in the 1970s, according to South Carolina EMS Association Advocacy and Legislative Chair Steven McDade. But since then, McDade said EMS has become a necessity in every community. "You can look at it from just an everyday thing, where you can call for a heart attack or a stroke or a car wreck, or look at the impact that EMS has had during this pandemic. They, really, we've been the ones, frontline, combatting that," he said. WIS-TV NBC/CW 10 COLUMBIA Kentucky public school utilizes virtual reality to train future firefighters VIDEO/PHOTOS: Jefferson County Public Schools is utilizing virtual reality to train future firefighters. The district is incorporating virtual reality into its academic programs and pathways, including in the Fire Science program at Fern Creek High School. Students use VR headsets to experience what it's like to enter a burning building. Fern Creek firefighters provide weekly class time and training for students. "They're able to get training done now, while they are in school, that would take them 6 months to complete after they graduated," said Nathan Mulvey, chief of the Fern Creek Fire Department. "So it's pretty exciting." Since there is also a shortage of EMTs, organizers are trying to develop an EMT program within the school's Fire Science program. WDRB-TV FOX 41 LOUISVILLE One small step for Maryland county, one giant leap for volunteer firefighter Christopher Williams is still in disbelief that he's going to be an astronaut. "It's still almost a little bit surreal, something that you've dreamed about your whole life and now getting the opportunity to do, I feel so lucky and honored to have the chance to do this and to be part of the team," he told MyMCM. NASA announced its latest astronauts on Dec. 6 with Williams and nine other candidates being selected from a field of more than 12,000 applicants, according to a press release from NASA. Since the original Mercury Seven space mission in 1959, there have only been 360 astronauts selected by NASA, including Williams' cohort. "Becoming an astronaut has been sort of a dream of mine ever since I was a little kid," Williams said.
