Elite group of first responders help Texans recover from disasters VIDEO: As North Texans prepared for severe weather and heeded tornado warnings Monday night, Gov. Greg Abbott issued a familiar directive. "The State of Texas has resources ready for swift deployment, and we are fully prepared to address any potential severe weather expected to impact communities across our state," the governor announced Monday afternoon. "I thank all of our emergency response personnel who are working around the clock to protect their fellow Texans this holiday season." The announcement is one of more than thirty instances just this year in which Gov. Abbott has "activated state resources," "increased readiness levels," or "directed immediate assistance" to areas in need. The levers behind such moves involve a statewide web of first responders and interagency coordination that can connect Texans with help before and after disaster strikes. KXAN-TV NBC 36 AUSTIN Centerville firefighter survives 18-wheeler crash, graduates from university VIDEO: A firefighter in Centerville has graduated from Sam Houston State University, but it was life-altering events that happened along the way that would later impact his ability to cross the stage, but through resilience, he did. "From the time I could walk, I was on the fire truck with my dad, my brother, several others within the department," said Colton Adams, a Sam Houston State graduate and Centerville Firefighter. "My dad and the current fire chief, he's the reason I love that department so much and the job." A family full of serving others, Colton Adams — along with another firefighter — barricaded the inner to left lanes of I-45 to adhere to a rear-end collision. Moments after, Colton's dad, John Adams, Centerville's assistant fire chief, hears of another accident at the same scene, not knowing it involved his son. KXXV-TV ABC 25 WACO Hutto celebrates opening of third fire station as city grows Emergency services are expanding in Hutto. On Wednesday, the city celebrated the grand opening of a third fire station on Limmer Loop – just west of Highway 130 in the Sienna subdivision – with a ribbon-cutting event. In 2016, voters approved a sales tax to help build new fire stations, buy fire trucks and hire firefighters. Officials said the new fire station will help first responders improve response times as the city's population continues to grow. "When it comes to a medical call, you get there with much quicker time to deliver your medical care," Hutto Fire Rescue Chief Scott Kerwood said. "Regardless of what community you are in, when it's a growing community, you see that you strategically have fire stations located in the community." The station is named after former Fire Chief David "Red" Oman, who served in the department for 28 years. KVUE-TV ABC 24 AUSTIN Donna Fire Department receives its first ladder fire truck A new firefighting tool is now available for Donna firefighters. The Donna Fire Department received its first ever 77-foot ladder truck. Donna Fire Chief David Simmons said the $965,000 truck could've come in handy at a fire the department recently put out. "We recently just had a fire over on the southeast side of Donna in a second story house where we had to use what we call ground ladders — the ones you pull up from the back of the truck and you have to pull a rope to extend it out," Simmons said. "Well, now we won't have to." Next month, firefighters will undergo training to use the new truck. KRGV-TV ABC 5 WESLACO Lott mobile home destroyed by fire Fire departments responded to a house fire in Lott early Thursday morning, leaving the mobile home at a total loss, according to officials. Lott Fire Captain, Tracey Miller, said the homeowner was in the home when the fire ignited but escaped safely. Miller said the homeowner is still searching for his dog. Lott Volunteer Fire Department, Rosebud and Chilton responded to the fire at the 800 block of E. Falls St. in Lott around 3 a.m. The cause of the fire is still unknown. This is an ongoing investigation. KWTX-TV CBS 10 WACO Off-duty San Antonio firefighter saves curious cat trapped in Christmas lights VIDEO: Last night, I came face to face with a curious cat that got all tangled up in my neighbor's Christmas lights. I was just heading out for my evening walk in the park with my dog when my neighbor called me over to their yard. "Hey Tim, you ever see this happen?" the neighbor asked. To my surprise, there was a young cat that had gotten himself all twisted up in their net lights that go around their shrubs. This poor cat was really stuck and it was really scared. It was jumping, twisting, hissing and clawing anytime my neighbors tried to get it free. I gave them some suggestions on what to do and went on my walk. When I returned home the cat was nowhere to be found so I assumed they had freed it. A short time later a young man knocked on our door and asked, "Did you know there's a cat in your yard that is trapped in some Christmas lights?" KSAT-TV ABC 12 SAN ANTONIO PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

KOCO-TV ABC 5 OKLAHOMA CITY Related Video: Oklahoma City Fire Department fights blaze Maryland fire chiefs now have helpers under new pilot program The Baltimore City Fire Department began a pilot program Monday to assign senior officers to assistants responsible for making numerous fire scene decisions. Dubbed "battalion technicians," the assistants aim to assist firefighters with tasks that can become overwhelming in an emergency, such as: B. the Stricker Street fire in January, in which several firefighters were trapped when a vacant house collapsed; three people died. In the past 16 years, six department reports have suggested that the department is instituting such a program, but it was only after the Stricker Street fire and the release of a damning investigative report into the incident that the department began providing aides to battalion chiefs. The department has six battalions, each led by a chief who acts as a "deployment commander" at a fire scene. KXAN-TV NBC 36 AUSTIN Jay Leno interview: 'Boom ... my face caught on fire' Jay Leno, the guru of the garage, did not mince words describing the accident that put him into intensive care. "And suddenly, boom, I got a face full of gas," Leno said. "And then the pilot light jumped and my face caught on fire." In a televised interview on NBC's "Today" show, the comic looked only a little worse for wear, and he's now back on stage doing standup after nine days at the Grossman Burn Center in Los Angeles. He was burned last month while he and his friend Dave Killackey were working on one of Leno's vintage automobiles, a 1907 White Steam Car. Describing the accident, Leno said that he had asked Killackey to blow some air through a clogged fuel line, when gasoline erupted and a pilot flame ignited it. "I couldn't even see his face," said Killackey, who joined Leno in the interview. The parking lot was full. "And as she arrived, it looked like a regular school day," Sibley said. "However, there was a car parked out front." It was shortly before 9:30 a.m. Their son, Daniel, had forgotten his homework. "Daniel had forgotten some items for school at home," Sibley said. "And so, her hope was to be able to get to the classes before assignments were due." WTNH-TV ABC 8 NEW HAVEN PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
