3 firefighters awarded Medal of Valor for attempted rescue in Mount Pleasant house fire Three firefighters were awarded the Medal of Valor after they attempted to rescue a man from a house fire in November. On Nov. 26, 2021, around 5 a.m., the Mount Pleasant Fire Department and County Volunteer Fire Departments were called to a structure fire with a person trapped inside the house. MPFD Deputy Chief Brad Eubanks responded alongside Engine 2 staffed by Captain Phil Fry, firefighters Bradley Stockinger, Trevor Jessee and Riley Russell. When they arrived at the fire, it was confirmed that a girl had escaped from the house and that her grandfather was still inside. Fry, Russell and Jessee attempted to enter the house through the front door with a hose line but were pushed back by the intensity of the fire. The repositioned to the outside area of the bedrooms of the house. Since there was not enough personnel on the scene to conduct a fire attack and rescue operations, the fire attack was abandoned and all efforts were focused on making the rescue. KETK-TV NBC 56 JACKSONVILLE Drivers in Houston can expect delays as crews continue to repair North Loop after fiery crash VIDEO: Crews are still making repairs more than 24 hours after a fiery crash involving three 18-wheelers caused damage to the North Loop. Traffic is able to get through, but the eastbound right and center lanes remain blocked off at Wayside. When a fuel truck exploded during the crash Wednesday morning, the exit sign above the roadway was charred. The high heat also caused damage to the concrete on the freeway, fire officials said. It's not clear how long the repairs will take. KTRK-TV ABC 13 HOUSTON Wichita Falls Fire Department hopes grant will solve understaffing issues With the Wichita Falls Fire Department struggling with overtime costs and juggling the 51 rostered employees in each battalion, city staff and fire department leaders are looking for ways to cut overtime and keep stations manned adequately. A $1.2 million grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, if approved, would allow the fire department to hire additional firefighters for three years, lightening the load of the ones who find themselves filling in for those out on vacation or on sick leave. It might also show the city if hiring more firefighters permanently is more cost effective than paying overtime. Wichita Falls Fire Chief Ken Prillaman said the city has been paying roughly $600,000 each year on overtime in recent years. In fact, he said last year they spent a little more than $900,000, leaving city councilors looking for a way to bring the overtime down. KFDX-TV NBC 3 WICHITA FALLS Amarillo Fire Department receives 100 sets of turnout gear through city of Amarillo support The Amarillo Fire Department has received new gear with the help of the city of Amarillo. According to a news release, the purchase and delivery of 100 sets of new firefighter protective gear were made possible through the city of Amarillo leadership's support. Protection from the fireground and the long-term health and safety for firefighters are top reasons the Amarillo Fire Department is delighted to have the gear, the release says. "We are elated to have this new personal protective equipment for our firefighters," said Fire Chief Jason Mays. "Having a second set of turnout gear is essential to the safety of our members, from a cancer-avoidance outlook, and should go a long way to ensure their long-term health." City officials recently approved the department's procurement of 100 new sets of Lion V-Force turnout gear, with added RedZone protection, according to the release. AMARILLO GLOBE-NEWS - METERED SITE Fire at abandoned Morning Star Motel likely caused by transients, Amarillo Fire Department says Firefighters extinguished a blaze at the abandoned Morning Star Motel that was likely caused by transients on Tuesday afternoon, officials said. According to AFD, at about 3:21 p.m., crews were called to a reported structure fire at an abandoned motel at 6th and McMasters. The first unit on scene found heavy smoke coming from one of the units of the motel, located at 2501 SW 6th. Firefighters entered the building and file a pile of times burning. VIDEO: Fire destroys Kentucky civic club A large fire tore through the Villa Hills Civic Club and destroyed it early Thursday, fire officials say. A passerby reported the blaze at 2:46 a.m. The club's single-story building is located off Rogers Road near Lakeshore Drive and the Villa Hills Police Department. Fire crews with the Crescent Springs Villa Hills Fire Department responded to find it fully engulfed in flames. No one was hurt, but the building looks like a total loss, according to Fire Chief Jeff Wendt. "It's a tragic thing...a loss for the city," said the club's director, Mike Martin. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Wendt said it may have started in the back of the building. Martin said the private club was formed nearly 61 years ago, in May 1961, is owned by the members and now amasses 23 acres in a beautiful country setting with fishing ponds. WXIX-TV FOX 19 CINCINNATI Boo! Visit The 'Ghostbusters' Fire Station In New York City Located at corner 14 North Monroe Street, the New York City Fire Department (FNDY) fire station was built in 1903 by Hook & Ladder Company 8. Initially, the building was designed to be the first in a series of Beaux-Arts-style firehouses by Alexander H. Stevens who was the city superintendent of buildings. The nostalgic exterior of the fire station has earned the fire department the name Ghostbusters Fire Station as it was used for scenes for the fictional film's franchise Ghostbusters released in 1984. The building brings about feelings of a mix of nostalgic childhood emotions as well as the thrill of the possibility of actually running into a ghost! This is where Peter, Ray, Egon, and Winston who were all famous characters from the set of Ghostbusters were known to set up their ghostbusting operations. THE TRAVEL Alabama fire department debuts blue fire trucks On Monday, Feb. 14 the Helena Fire Department shared a sneak peek at their new fire trucks. The trucks truly stand out from their predecessors in that they are Helena's signature Husky blue as opposed to the traditional red. "Our love for the community is now on display," the department wrote in a Facebook post. "That's right, our new Husky Blue firetruck has arrived and will soon be in service at Station 1." Fire Chief Pete Valenti said the change in image was the idea of Mayor Brian Puckett. "[Puckett] wanted a white fire engine with Husky Blue striping," Valenti said. "I, being a 37 year veteran at Helena Fire Department, was reluctant to the change." After a few conversations with the mayor, Valenti came around, and he told Puckett if they were going to make a change, they may as well go all the way. Hence the blue fire trucks were born.
