San Antonio firefighters respond to 2-alarm fire in downtown building VIDEO: San Antonio firefighters responded to a 2-alarm fire in a downtown building late Wednesday night. The fire was called in around 11 p.m. in the 500 block of Urban Loop, not far from Interstate 10 and near the University of Texas at San Antonio downtown campus. Firefighters said they arrived to find the unoccupied, historical building with heavy smoke and fire. They believe it was caused by homeless in the area since there are no utilities going into the building. Fire officials said they did an initial search and found no one inside. They had to pull out firefighters and battle the flames defensively due to potential dangers. The backside of the building has since continued to burn and collapse, firefighters said. According to the San Antonio Fire Department website, as many as 31 units answered the call. KSAT-TV ABC 12 SAN ANTONIO Montague County: Sunset Fire Department truck hit by semi PHOTO: A fire department in Montague County was involved in a crash on Wednesday after a winter storm hit north Texas. According to the Sunset, Texas Fire Department, crews were working the scene of a rollover accident and their engine was blocking the road when a passing 18-wheeler hit the vehicle. The engine was sent about 60 feet before it came to a stop. No one was injured, though the department said on Facebook that losing the engine was a "devastating blow to our small Volunteer Department." They used the situation to remind people to slow down while on the roads. KAUZ-TV CBS/CW+ 6 WICHITA FALLS Dickinson ISD driver acts fast to unload middle school students when school bus catches fire VIDEO: A Dickinson ISD bus driver got her students out safely after their school bus caught fire in a Galveston County subdivision Wednesday night. The bus was dropping off students in the Bay Colony subdivision when the engine compartment caught fire. The bus driver was able to get all of the middle school students off before the fire spread, officials said. "This afternoon Bus route #1702 was completing its route when the driver smelled smoke," Dickinson ISD Communication Director Tammy Dowdy said. "She quickly pulled over and evacuated the few remaining Lobit Middle School students that were on the bus." "The students and driver are safe and another bus will deliver them to their homes. Parents of students on the bus have been contacted." Dickinson Assistant Fire Chief Tim Johnson confirmed nobody was injured in the bus fire. KHOU-TV CBS 11 HOUSTON Driver dies after car crashes into tree, catches on fire in Dallas A North Texas driver died after their car caught fire because of a crash, according to the Dallas Police Department. Around 2:21 a.m. Thursday, officers responded to a one-vehicle accident that happened on the northbound side of 11880 North Central Expressway in Dallas. This is near where U.S. Highway 75 intersects with Forest Lane. The accident caused parts of North Central Expressway and Forest Lane to be shut down while police officers and firefighters were on the scene. The vehicle ran into a tree in front of a Whataburger restaurant. When officers arrived at the scene, they learned the car had left the roadway, hit a tree and caught on fire. Once the fire was put out, officers could be seen investigating the vehicle as smoke was coming off it. Dallas Fire-Rescue also responded and pronounced the driver dead on the scene. WFAA-TV ABC 8 DALLAS Update: Pier 19 restaurant in South Padre Island reignites after devastating fire VIDEO: After suffering a devastating fire overnight, Pier 19 reignited, likely due to strong winds. KVEO reporters were on the scene and witnessed a fire around the boat dock. First responders were unable to get to that area to put out the fire. The fire was dying down on its own. The fire reignited around 5:30 p.m. and was likely fueled by the wind that has reached over 30 mph on South Padre Island. According to Fire Chief Jim Pigg, the original fire started around midnight. Surrounding fire departments assisted through the night to control the fire. No one was inside of the building at the time of the fire. KGBT-TV 4 HARLINGEN Tyler Fire Department gets approved to apply for grants The Tyler City Council approved the Tyler Fire Department to apply for and accept grants collectively totaling $49,993.50. The fire department will pursue the grant funding through the Office of the Texas Governor's Homeland Security Grant Division and grant funding through the state homeland security program managed by the East Texas Council Governments (ETCOG). The grant funds would help TFD be able to purchase a remote control robot for the departments' Explosive Ordinance Disposal (EOD) Regional Response Team. "This additional piece of equipment will assist in safe identification, the rendering safe of unexploded ordnance (UXO's) and improvised explosive devices (IEDs)," said Fire Chief David Coble. "At this time our bomb team is fully accredited, operational, and has already made several calls that fall within our response area." KETK-TV NBC 56 JACKSONVILLE PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

VIDEO: Two people injured escaping apartment fire in California Two people jumped out of a second-story window to escape a fire in South Land Park Thursday morning. Sacramento Fire Battalion Chief Dave Lauchner said fire crews were called to the complex along Land Park Drive near 43rd Avenue around 4 a.m. Upon arrival, they discovered heavy fire on the backside of the apartment building. Fire crews also found two people on the ground, injured from escaping the fire. They were transported to an area hospital, where they currently remain. About 15 people have been displaced from their homes as a result of the fire, Lauchner said. One of the two residents who escaped through the window is confirmed to be a disabled veteran. "My neighbors, I hope they're doing fine, I pray they're doing fine," one displaced resident, Sean Rodriguez, told ABC10. "I just made sure everybody got out safely. KXTV ABC 10 SACRAMENTO Memories of 1985 South Dakota grain elevator explosion remain ‘clear as a bell' PHOTOS: It was a quiet Saturday evening, a little past 6 p.m., and Duane and Marlys Tieszen were just sitting down in their kitchen to enjoy a snack. "We were sitting right at this table, and we had just gotten out a pail of ice cream and had bowls on the table," Duane told the Mitchell Republic in a recent interview. "And our place started jumping. That's exactly what it did." A series of three explosions, all in quick succession, had thundered through the community of Marion, a city of about 800 residents located approximately 45 minutes west-southwest of Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Duane, mayor of the town at the time who also served as an emergency medical technician and firefighter, and Maryls, also an EMT, knew immediately that something had gone terribly wrong. "I ran to the door and I could see the fire out there. I (told Marlys) 'grab your jacket, we gotta go,'" Duane recalled. GRAND FORKS HERALD Minnesota Fire Captain Creates Undergarment To Protect Firefighters From Cancer-Causing Chemicals VIDEO: They are the heroes we call when we need help. But firefighters need some help of their own. They are getting cancer at a high rate because of the elements they are exposed to. "We have a 9% higher chance than the general public of getting cancer, and we have a 14% greater risk of dying of those cancers," said Mark Munson, a captain with St. Paul Fire Department. Two years ago, a fellow St. Paul firefighter died from cancer he got on the job, and earlier this month, an Albert Lea firefighter died of cancer also linked to on the job exposure. Munson says it's become too common. "The names are just coming," he said. After years of battling blazes, Monson is now fighting to keep his peers alive. Munson got a big idea from the uniform hoods firefighters use that cover the head and neck. Munson felt like there were other parts of their body that needed protection, specifically high exposure areas like underarms and groin. "I thought, why aren't we protecting those areas?" he said. WCCO-TV CBS 4 MINNEAPOLIS Drone operator who harassed Virginia firefighters sentenced to probation The operator of a rogue drone that harassed Salem firefighters from the air was put on probation for two years Tuesday. "It was an absolutely stupid mistake," James Russell Weeks III said during a sentencing hearing in Roanoke's federal court. "I totally regret the decision I made." Weeks, 40, had earlier pleaded guilty to operating an unregistered aircraft the day he piloted his drone over a Salem fire station, swooping down repeatedly on firefighters and police officers who were gathered outside. First responders were more annoyed than intimidated by the bizarre incident, according to court documents. Nonetheless, U.S. District Judge Elizabeth Dillon said there was a risk of harm. If nothing else, she said, firefighters were distracted at a time when they were on call to respond to emergencies. Prosecutors did not seek a jail term. ROANOKE TIMES - METERED SITE Fire Department in Colorado Using Ultrasound To Aid Diagnosis In The Field South Metro Fire Rescue (SMFR) covers 287 square miles and serves 540,000 residents of the southern metropolitan area of Denver. During 2021, SMFR responded to 44,760 in-district incidents and 29,422 or 66% of those were medical; 20,458 of the medical calls resulted in transport to the hospital. When safely possible, SMFR administers medical assistance in the field that assists and hastens patient care upon arrival at the hospital. When appropriate, SMFR will treat and resolve the medical issue without hospitalization, if that is in the patient's best interests. The Emergency Medical Services Division (EMS) of SMFR, "continually searches for the most recent and applicable medical modalities to improve patient outcomes and the patient experience." In 2018, SMFR EMS began to evaluate the potential use of Point of Care Ultrasound (POCUS) to assist its paramedics in confirming specific diagnoses in the field to forward their goal of improving patient outcomes.
