Smokehouse Creek Fire in Texas explodes to become second-largest wildfire in U.S. history after burning 1.1 million acres VIDEO: In the Texas Panhandle, lampposts are now melted, power line posts are split in half and homes and properties have been reduced to charred remains. The Smokehouse Creek Fire that broke out on Monday has since extended to 1.1 million acres, firefighters said Thursday, quickly becoming the "largest and most destructive" in state history. The West Odessa Volunteer Fire Department said overnight that the fire, located in Hutchinson County, grew to 1.1 million acres and is roughly 3% contained. "This is now both the largest and most destructive fire in Texas history," the department wrote on Facebook. "It is also the second largest wildfire in U.S. history." On Wednesday, the Texas A&M Forest Service increased the state's wildland fire preparedness level to a 3 out of 5, meaning that "wildfire activity is impacting several regions of the state as the result of drought, dry vegetation or frequent fire weather events." No civilians were injured. The blaze started Wednesday afternoon, and AFD said over 120 firefighters were working to extinguish the fire. At 2:20 p.m., AFD said crews responded to the three-story building with a "defensive" fire in the 2900 block of South Interstate 35 service road northbound, the agency said on social media. That's near Oltorf and Woodward Street. AFD said there was a structural collapse on the second floor of the building with "multiple exposures," which means there is more danger associated with the fire. In an update at 2:50 p.m., AFD said crews are searching the area for other possible fires due to the windy conditions. KXAN-TV NBC 36 AUSTIN Related WIth Photos: 4-alarm fire spreads from empty building to Austin hotel, officials say Maine fire department moves out of station it has called home for 120 years PHOTOS: After more than a century at the town's Island Avenue fire station, the department officially moved Wednesday to its new home at the town's public safety building. The last firefighters to work from the old fire station, at 16 Island Ave. on the island downtown, finished their shift Wednesday morning. The move came with little fanfare, but it marks the end of an era in Skowhegan history, said Skowhegan fire Chief Ronnie Rodriguez. "The fire service is one of those professions that is steeped in a lot of traditions and history," said Rodriguez, who was hired as chief in December 2022. "Even though I am new, I have a tremendous amount of respect and admiration for those that have come before and paved the path to get us to where we are today." CENTRAL MAINE - METERED SITE Emergency communications operational despite nationwide AT&T outage Last week, AT&T suffered a nationwide outage that the company believes was caused by "the application and execution of an incorrect process used as we were expanding our network, not a cyber attack," according to the company's website. AT&T acknowledged the outage on its site at 10:15 a.m. on Thursday and reported that all service was restored just after 2 p.m. Despite many AT&T customers on post being unable to use their wireless devices, first responders – who rely on AT&T's FirstNet for some communications – were fully operational. "This outage has had no impact on the First Responder Broadband Network (FirstNet) on Redstone Arsenal," Deputy Fire Chief Robert Simmons said. "Our FirstNet devices have continued to function normally. I have talked with network engineers at AT&T, and they tell me this is true of the network across the nation." THE REDSTONE ROCKET New miniature ambulance truck arrives at Florida fire department VIDEO: Dunedin Fire Rescue just got a new set of wheels which, they say, will help them respond to calls more efficiently. Firefighters say they're the only department in the Tampa Bay region with a miniature ambulance. Alex Miller is a firefighter with Dunedin Fire Rescue. He said it's going to be perfect for responding to crowded events where they would have to maneuver through narrow spaces. "We're the second biggest city for events and special rescues in the Pinellas County area just behind St. Pete," Miller said. This special rescue vehicle costs about $70,000. It was paid for with ARPA funding the city received following the pandemic. The biggest perk about having this new ride is having an enclosed box for treating patients. WTSP-TV CBS 10 ST.
