Fire destroys San Antonio home; firefighter taken to hospital with sprained ankle A house partially collapsed after a fire on the city's east side, San Antonio Fire Department Public Information Officer Joe Arrington said. The fire broke out around 4 p.m. on Wednesday in the 1200 block of Denver Boulevard. Arrington said the flames reached anywhere from 15 to 20 feet above the structure, and when crews arrived, they could feel the heat coming from the home. However, no one was home at the time. But, a firefighter was injured in what SAFD believes is a sprained ankle; he was taken to a local hospital. It took around 20 to 25 minutes to get the fire under control. Crews were able to contain the flames so no other homes were affected. The fire station that responded is one block away from the home, so crews were able to work quickly, despite the challenge. Arrington said it's believed that one person lives there. Adams and his fellow firefighter Clint Franklin were struck and injured by a vehicle nearly seven months ago. Adams was taken by air ambulance to a hospital in Temple where he was later released and still continues rehabilitation to this day. Franklin was also taken to the hospital by air ambulance but was later treated and released the same day of the incident. Determined not to let anything deter him from doing what he loves, Adams suited up, oxygen tank and all for the first time since his accident. In a video shared by the Centerville Volunteer Fire Department Adams is seen walking and training outside the fire station as his colleagues support him from a distance. KBTX-TV CBS 3 BRYAN Jasper County: Former chief Bob Gary named East End Volunteer Fire Department Firefighter of the Year Former longtime East End Fire Department Chief Bob Gary has been named the department's Firefighter of the Year. The honor came on Tuesday evening at the annual awards banquet held in the Jasper Fire Hall. Bob Gary is the longest serving member of the department, having begun his firefighting career in 1994. He received the award from current East End Fire Chief Corey Deavers. Meanwhile, the Chief's Award went to Larry Neel, who joined the department in 2001. Also honored was retiring Firefighter Calvin Cooper, who also joined the department in 2001 and served in many roles over the years, the latest of which being Chaplain for the department. KJAS-FM 107.3 JASPER Man taken to hospital in critical condition following ‘dangerous' fire at San Antonio home, fire department says San Antonio firefighters rescued a man who was unconscious inside a burning home in the Encino Park area on the far North Side. SAFD Chief Charles Hood said the fire was reported just before noon on Wednesday in the 2100 block of Oak Bend, near Highway 281 and Encino Rio. Firefighters arrived at the home to find "heavy, heavy smoke" inside, making it dangerous for them to see, Hood said. They found the man at the bottom of the stairwell on the first floor, he said. The man was taken to Brooke Army Medical Center in "extremely" critical condition. A cat was found dead in the secondary search. The fire likely started hours earlier and burned through the second floor. The second floor was not stable and the stairwell had burned, Hood said. KSAT-TV ABC 12 SAN ANTONIO Odessa Fire Rescue offering hands on CPR and AED outreach The sudden collapse of NFL Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin on the field Monday night has left many people curious about where they can get CPR and AED training. Odessa Fire Rescue offers hands-on CPR and AED training and outreach for the community that is faster than getting your certification, but still teaches the basics when facing a life or death situation. "Years ago we found out that for the person it's just a lot easier to teach this process a lot of people are probably more familiar with the certification type of CPR. Now we're pushing this hands only. You just push hard and fast on the chest and of course we teach you to follow that up with the AED as soon as possible," said OFR Assistant Chief Daniel Chavez. The outreach is administered through their training division with the occasional help of other firefighters, paramedics and fire stations. KOSA-TV CBS 7 ODESSA White Oak man talks balancing work, love in 50th year as firefighter VIDEO: These days most people have a couple career changes during their time on the job, but a White Oak man has stuck with the same job during his working life. And that man has been a firefighter for half a century. Tommy Graves and his wife Diana are very familiar with the White Oak Volunteer Fire Department. Neither know just when Tommy will have to stop by and gear up. "The wives don't understand how everything works. When you get your fire call, you jump up out of the bed, out the door. They don't hear from you for hours," Tommy said. He said that happened just a few days ago. "I didn't think he was going to be gone that long. He was gone for seven hours. It got to me. I got over it, but it got to me," Diana said. Even after 30 years of marriage, being at the beck and call of disaster can still be trying on a relationship. KTRE-TV ABC 9 LUFKIN PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

PHOTOS: Driver plows into fire truck on interstate in Connecticut A driver crashed into a fire truck on Interstate 91 south in Windsor Locks on Wednesday morning. Public safety dispatchers confirmed to Channel 3 that a Windsor Locks Fire Department vehicle was involved in the collision just before 4 a.m. State police said the fire truck had been parked in the right and right center lanes right before exit 38. Its crew was there for a prior crash. Troopers said 58-year-old Gloria Keefe of Suffield was driving in the right center lane and struck the truck. Keefe needed to be transported to St. Francis Hospital for minor injuries. The fire truck was unoccupied at the time of the collision, so no firefighters were hurt. Keefe was found to be at fault, according to state police. She was issued an infraction for traveling too fast for conditions and failure to move over or slow down for an emergency vehicle. KBTX-TV CBS 3 BRYAN 'It looked like a battlefield': Firefighters who battled deadly New York fire reflect a year later VIDEO: One year after New York City's deadliest fire in decades, the firefighters who responded to the Twin Parks North West apartment complex on Jan. 9, 2022 are sharing their stories. "It was a fire that you probably respond to once in a career," said Jeffrey Facinelli, a battalion chief at the FDNY's 18th Battalion. "We were dealing with so many worst case scenarios," said FDNY Capt. John Hunt. "It looked like a battlefield." Hunt was among the first to arrive at the Bronx building, alongside the crews of Engine 48 and Ladder 56. They encountered smoke spilling out of windows, before heading inside to fight the fire. "It's almost like a tornado that you're going into," said Hunt. "Very acrid, thick smoke that's stuck right to your face inside, right to the thermal imaging camera to the point where I couldn't see." NEWS 12 THE BRONX Pennsylvania teen develops boards to help first responders communicate with people with disabilities VIDEO: A Delaware County teenager is hoping to change the way first responders interact with people with disabilities by providing them with a new tool. Jessica Smith, 19, has spent the last few years designing police communication boards, which are laminated pieces of paper to help an officer and a person who may not understand them to get on the same page. "They aren't trained well enough to deal with people with disabilities and I wanted to make these boards to start a change," said Jessica, who makes the boards with pictures and easy phrases like 'when is your birthday' or 'scared.' It's based on a board-making program the teen has used her entire life. "I care because I personally have autism and I've had some instances with the police, none of them were too bad," said Jesscia. Still, she thought the interactions could have gone better. WPVI-TV ABC 6 PHILADELPHIA With AED loan program, Iowa fire department hopes to equip citizens for emergency response VIDEO: Having a defibrillator on hand probably isn't the first thing many of us are thinking about when planning get-togethers. But a program from the Nevada Fire Department is letting anyone have access to a valuable tool for preparing themselves for emergencies. "We've used the AED at youth football, or we've also seen AEDs go out of state to South Dakota to a Boy Scout camping trip. So we're really excited about the public taking advantage of it," said Ray Reynolds, Director of Fire & Emergency Medical Services for the city. In order to check out the AED, all a person has to do is go through CPR training with one of Nevada's EMS personnel. That training is also meant to help mentally prepare a person for a speedy reaction in a crisis. WOI-DT ABC 5 AMES PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
