‘Nothing Short of a Miracle': Irving Firefighter Returns After 500-Day Battle With COVID-19 VIDEO: EMT firefighter Joseph Solecki is back on the front lines with the Irving Fire Department after the battle of his life. For 500 days, Solecki had COVID-19 and it was a battle that nearly cost him everything. "Just amazing, it's actually nothing short of a miracle," said Capt. Jeff Judd, with the IFD. Judd said he and several other firefighters caught COVID-19 shortly after treating a patient with the virus in July 2021. Several became very ill, but no one was hit as fast and as hard as Solecki. "It was very shocking to see how quickly he deteriorated. Being a healthy guy as he was to being in the hospital in a coma," said IFD driver Richard Estes, who is also the secretary of the local union. Solecki's firefighter "brothers" in Irving, Bryan-College Station, Houston and Brazos County rallied around his family. KXAS-TV NBC 5 FORT WORTH Original Juneteenth museum burns in Fort Worth blaze PHOTO: A one-story home in Fort Worth – which once served as the original Juneteenth museum for close to 20 years – burned in an overnight fire, fire officials told WFAA. The Fort Worth Fire Department (FWFD) said firefighters responded at approximately 1:15 a.m. Wednesday to a reported structure fire in the 1100 block of Evans Avenue. When crews got to the scene, they found the wooded structure fully involved in flames, FWFD said. Two buildings adjacent to the home were also catching fire because of wind. Firefighters cleared the buildings and began fighting the fires in all three locations, which took close to an hour to extinguish, according to fire officials. One person was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation and there were not any other reported injuries. WFAA-TV ABC 8 DALLAS Trenton Fire Department donates equipment to Guatemala A Texoma volunteer fire department recently gave back to a fire station nearly two thousand miles away. Trenton Fire Chief C.J Fillingham said, "we're paying it forward a whole bunch, is what we're trying to do." Not only does the Trenton Volunteer Fire Department serve its community, but the department recently donated extra equipment to a fire department in great need. After seeing a video of Retalhuleu Volunteer Fire Department, in Guatemala extracting individuals in a vehicle with a pry bar, the department knew they had to help. Chief Fillingham said using the pry bar is an outdated method used to extract individuals from damaged vehicles after severe collisions, "we're fortunate that we had three additional sets of "Jaws of Life." ‘Jaws of Life' is a hydraulic-extrication rescue tool that helps extract people quicker after a crash. KXII-TV CBS/MYNETWORKTV/FOX 12 SHERMAN 1 person, 2 dogs rescued in Grand Prairie house fire One person was hurt in a house fire in Grand Prairie Thursday morning. Grand Prairie Fire Department Capt. James Purdom said the fire at the home near Vega Street and Sunnyvale Road started around 7 a.m. Firefighters pulled an adult and two dogs out of the burning house. That person was taken to the hospital in an unknown condition. Capt. Said his firefighters did an outstanding job getting inside the house and taking care of the victim despite the harsh conditions. The inside of the house suffered significant damage, he said. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. KDFW-TV FOX 4 DALLAS Victoria Fire Department's first civilian cadets train to earn certifications Seven residents began training this week with the Victoria Fire Department to earn their firefighter/EMT certifications as part of the department's new civilian cadet program. For the first time this year, residents had the opportunity to apply for employment with the Victoria Fire Department as civilian cadets. The new hires will complete the fire department's in-house certification program as staff-in-training while earning a full-time salary. "With the changes in the job market following the pandemic, we were seeing fewer applicants who already had their firefighter/EMT certifications," Fire Chief Tracy Fox said. "This program is a great way for us to recruit local talent by reaching residents who could benefit from this type of paid training opportunity." CITY OF VICTORIA Cellers Hills Fire in Throckmorton 75% contained The Texas A&M Forest Service have released an update on a 150 acre wide grass fire. On January 11, 150 acres of grass and brush caught on fire at the R.A. Brown Ranch. Throckmorton County Office of Emergency Management made a Facebook post that said Forest Service workers and the fire department cut a track around the fire to try to contain the fire. Around 10:30 p.m., the Texas A&M Forest Service had complete guard around the fire and firefighters left the scene. Forest Service will be there for a short time and ranch workers will stay overnight to watch the fire to ensure nothing new breaks out. As of 10:40 p.m. on January 11, the fire has been 75% contained. KTAB-TV CBS 32 ABILENE PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

VIDEO: Residents of Northern Illinois city voice concerns after massive blaze spews apparent chemicals in air There will be an update Thursday afternoon after a massive fire erupted at the Carus Chemical plant in La Salle Wednesday morning. Some neighbors have concerns. The residential neighborhood around the plant appears to have been covered with chemicals. A shelter-in-place was ordered for several hours as a precaution, but has since been lifted. La Salle is about 94 miles southwest of Chicago. Residents are free to go about their normal business Thursday morning, heading to work, school or just going about their regular routine, as officials work to find out what happened. Video of a fire ball during the incident has been widely shared on social media. "I pull up to the stop sign, and hear a loud explosion," witness Khaleef Hammad said. WLS-TV ABC 7 CHICAGO Related: Extra-alarm fire guts chemical plant in LaSalle Truck 5 arrives: Arkansas fire department shows off new equipment VIDEO: The Hot Springs Fire Department made a trip to City Hall Tuesday to show the city board of directors one of its newest purchases. The board approved the $2.2 million purchase of a 107-foot tiller aerial ladder by Pierce Manufacturing Inc. and accompanying equipment in May 2021. The cost was included in the $2.95 million the board authorized the city to borrow for 2021 capital expenses. U.S. Bancorp Government Leasing and Financing is carrying the five-year note at an interest rate of 1.13%. The state Constitution allows local governments to finance capital expenses for up to five years. The city also bought a new swift-water rescue boat with excess funds as the purchase was $100,000 less than expected. "We appreciate the board buying the truck for us," Fire Chief Ed Davis said. KXAS-TV NBC 5 FORT WORTH ‘It was a calling': Senior chaplain building chaplaincy program for North Carolina fire department VIDEO: Fires, crashes, and other emergencies — firefighters see it all. The Raleigh Fire Department is building a program to provide comfort for both firefighters and fire and accident victims. The goal is to instill hope. For 25 years, the Rev. Jeffrey Neal responded to emergency calls as a firefighter with the Raleigh Fire Department. A few years ago, he hit a turning point. "I got sick, which led to I guess what you might say a mental breakdown, if you will," said Neal. "And once I got out of that situation, I realized that a lot of other people, my coworkers, my brothers and sisters in the fire service, were going through things as well." He worked with the Raleigh Fire Department to establish a chaplaincy program. WNCN-TV CBS 17 GOLDSBORO Florida doctor, a pioneer of emergency medical services in 1960s, dies at age 98 If you ever need to call 911, you will take for granted that the first responders who arrive will have sufficient training and skills to cope with virtually any medical emergency That wasn't the case in much of the country well into the 1960s, when Dr. Eugene Nagel helped develop the modern emergency medical system. Nagel fostered key elements in the training, staffing and equipping of emergency crews while working in Miami, earning him a place on what his son calls "the Mount Rushmore of emergency medicine." Nagel died Tuesday at age 98 in Winter Haven, where he had lived since 1980. The anesthesiologist spent the final years of his career working at Winter Haven Hospital. Nagel is listed among 11 "EMS Innovators" on the website of the National EMS Museum, along with Dr. Peter Safar, credited with developing cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and Dr. William Kouwenhoven, who developed the closed chest defibrillator.
