Longview's fire station 5 nearing completion VIDEO: Longview's Fire Station 5 is nearing completion. It is just one of the many projects voters approved in the $104 million 2018 bond election. Station 5 was built in 1985, and although it underwent renovation in 2016, it's gotten a bit tight in there as you can see as a fire engine pulls into a bay. According to Longview Fire Marshal Kevin May, the new bay is much larger with side-opening doors. "From the aesthetic side, they are a nicer-looking door. They're supposed to open in somewhere around three seconds. So that gives us a quicker response out the door," May said. The back bay doors are on back-order. The bay itself has built-in drainage. "We try to wash our fire trucks, keep them clean, keep the road grime off of them, so they can pull in, rinse them off, wash them inside," May said. And looking up, the ceiling has color to it. KLTV ABC/TELEMUNDO 7 TYLER Farmersville Firefighter Loses Half Her Body Weight VIDEO: Weight loss is a common new year resolution. If making the pledge has proven easier than achieving it, a Collin County woman's weight loss journey might serve up some inspiration. For Penny Leaver, looking back at photos of some of the more memorable moments of her life makes her cringe. "I hate the way I look and it makes me remember how horrible I felt also," Leaver said. The 43-year-old says she began gaining weight in college then started working nights. "I just started picking up some really unhealthy habits I would eat right before I went to bed, we would eat whatever food because it was fast, it was whatever was open at that time," Leaver recalled. At her heaviest, she says she weighed 350 pounds. It took a serious health scare for her to get serious about getting healthy. KXAS-TV NBC 5 FORT WORTH Houston: Cy-Fair Fire Department launches program to carry whole blood to help trauma patients The Cy-Fair Fire Department said three supervisor vehicles will carry blood products so EMS crews can do blood transfusions in the field for trauma patients. "If we can get blood products to the patient faster, we can increase survivability from trauma and from medical incidents," said Asst. Chief Justin Reed. The program to carry whole blood launched last week. "Within the first day, we had blood products administered to a patient within five hours, which just in and of itself shows the need that we have in our community," Reed said. The fire department is partnering with the Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center. The department said a specialized cooler holds the blood at four degrees Celsius so it doesn't expire and crews have a system to warm it as well. According to Cy-Fair, EMS and paramedic crews were trained on how to do the blood transfusion in the field in preparation for the program. KPRC-TV NBC 2 HOUSTON College Station firefighters tear up old city hall for rescue training VIDEO: The old College Station city hall is soon to be demolished, with the first steps of the process starting Thursday morning. But throughout the week it's been of use to the community in a very unique way, one last time. Shattered glass, walls filled with ax holes, kicked-down doors, and simulation theater smoke were behind every corner of the former city hall building on Texas Avenue. For the past three days, dozens of firefighters have been performing mayday rescues of their colleagues in the hallways. "Crews who are stationed at the stations near this location have pre-planned this building, and we're familiar with it as city employees," said CSFD Capt. Stuart Marrs. "But we haven't seen it like this. We haven't seen it full of smoke, lights off, with the offices empty." KXXV-TV ABC 25 WACO Firefighters rescue family dog from burning home in San Antonio Firefighters rescued a family pet during an early-morning house fire on the North Side. The fire started around 7:30 a.m. at a home off Aganier Avenue near San Pedro Avenue. San Antonio Fire Department spokesman Joe Arrington said that heavy fire could be seen in the back of the home when crews arrived on scene. Firefighters made an aggressive attack inside the home and had the fire knocked down within 15-20 minutes. The aggressive attack helped minimize the damage to the home. The residents were able to make it out safely. Firefighters rescued a dog from inside the home and reunite them with the family. Significant damage was done to the back of the home, but Arrington said it is repairable. No injuries were reported. KABB-TV FOX 29 SAN ANTONIO Boy gets a new bike from Seguin first responders following house fire PHOTO: A picture making the rounds on social media shows the kindness of first-responders working together. The Seguin Fire Department and the Seguin Police Department noticed a young boy lost his bike in a fire and decided to do something about it. Firefighters responded to a fire at a home Tuesday morning. They said it wasn't a major fire, but it caused damage to the front porch and siding. After it was put out, they noticed that a bike on the front porch had been burned up. That's when they took it upon themselves to find a solution. With the help of the Seguin Police Department, the firefighters found a way to bring a huge smile to the face of the bike's owner, by getting him a new one. The good news made it onto social media, although the little boy's identity was not mentioned. KENS-TV CBS 5 SAN ANTONIO PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

The fire started Wednesday afternoon at a commercial courtyard near the intersection of Baldwin Street and Bartlett Avenue, just east of Highway 395. A knockdown was reported around 8:27 p.m. AIR7 HD captured video of the building engulfed in flames. Crews were also spotted trying to repair power lines, which also caught fire and caused a brief outage. It's unclear what the building houses. The courtyard is located near several homes and a strip mall. KABC-TV ABC 7 LOS ANGELES Texas Firefighter Loses Half Her Body Weight Weight loss is a common new year resolution. KXAS-TV NBC 5 FORT WORTH REELZ announces documentary about Rhode Island's 2003 Great White club fire REELZ has announced the network's original documentary America's Deadliest Rock Concert: The Guest List premieres Sunday, February 20th at 8 pm ET/ 5 pm PT presenting the deeply personal stories of lives forever altered by the tragic Station nightclub fire that left 100 people dead, more than 200 injured, and devastated the tight-knit community of West Warwick, Rhode Island. It is also a story of the triumph of the human spirit, as seen in a community's resilience and the recovery and rebirth of Joe Kinan, who was the last survivor pulled from the fire and the most severely burned. On the night of February 20, 2003, more than 400 music fans packed into the small Station nightclub. Just seconds after 80s sensation Great White took the stage, pyrotechnics ignited a fire that raced up the walls and across the ceiling of the packed venue. In less than 90 seconds, most of those who hadn't already made their escape would be trapped inside. THE MUSIC UNIVERSE 19 states have fewer than 15% of ICU beds left as health care staffing shortages complicate care As a record number of Americans are infected with Covid-19, largely due to the rapidly spreading Omicron variant, some states' health care systems are beset with nearly full intensive care units. Nineteen states have less than 15% remaining capacity in their ICUs. Four of them have less than 10%: Kentucky, Alabama, Indiana and New Hampshire, according to data Wednesday from the US Department of Health and Human Services. The other states are: Arizona, Delaware, Georgia, Massachusetts, Mississippi, Missouri, Nevada, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Texas and Vermont, according to HHS. Nationally, the number of people hospitalized in the US with Covid-19 has reached a record high -- 151,261 as of Wednesday. And as infection spreads, states and health care systems nationwide are handling shortages of available medical workers, who face a greater chance of Covid-19 exposure and must isolate after testing positive.
