| 15 Years Later: Remembering Kilgore Firefighters Killed in Training Accident Sunday, Jan. 25, 2009, will forever be etched in the hearts and minds of the Kilgore Fire Department. On that day, firefighters Cory Galloway, 28, of Grand Saline, and Kyle Perkins, 45, of Kilgore, were training at Stark Hall on the Kilgore College campus. As they were going through their exercises in a new ladder truck, the vehicle's aerial basket, which was carrying four firefighters, became caught on the eight-story building's parapet, according to the Kilgore News-Herald. As an operator was attempting to free the basket, it swung away from the Stark Hall wall, tossing Galloway and Perkins against the basket walls. The Kilgore News-Herald reported the front door of the aerial platform failed causing the firefighters to fall. Galloway and Perkins were taken to a local hospital where they later died. KYTX-TV CBS/CW+ 19 NACOGDOCHES Tyler Fire Department applies for grant to update command trailer technology equipment The Tyler Fire Department is working to enhance the city's emergency preparedness and response capabilities. They plan to do just that by improving one of their regional assets using grant funds. Wednesday morning, Tyler City Council approved submitting an application by the Tyler Fire Department, for an up to $50,000 grant managed by the East Texas Council of Governments. "We do this annually. It's to supplement regional assets," said Tyler Fire Chief David Coble. The Tyler Fire Department plans to use the money to upgrade the equipment inside their command trailer. The trailer is used as a remote base for first responders when out on a major scene. It provides a space for communication, meetings, storage, and for recovery, deploying it throughout the state when needed. KLTV ABC 7 TYLER 1 hospitalized after fire destroys home in Gun Barrel City One person was hospitalized following a house fire in Gun Barrel City. According to the Gun Barrel City Fire Department, on Wednesday, Jan. 24, around 8:40 a.m., crews responded to a house fire in the 100 block of Pine Bloom Dr. "Upon arrival, heavy smoke and fire was observed coming from the roof and windows," the GBCFD said. "Gun Barrel City requested mutual aid from Mabank, Tool, Seven Points Fire Departments and Payne Springs Fire Rescue." The homeowners and their dogs were able to escape. One resident was taken to a local hospital for smoke inhalation. | VIDEO: New Jersey warehouse inferno escalates to 8 alarms, forces evacuations An inferno that torched a New Jersey warehouse, spewing smoke seen for miles, is under control authorities say, though firefighters expect to be dousing hotspots throughout the day Thursday. The fire on Nassau Street and Georges Road in North Brunswick erupted at an address linked to an old mattress factory around the time of Wednesday's evening rush. It escalated to eight alarms within hours. The fire was fueled in part by propane tanks and other combustible materials, officials said. Firefighters from as far as an hour from the scene were called to assist, and homes in the area were evacuated as a precaution. No injuries were reported. Road closures were in effect through the overnight hours. An investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing. "It is a great benefit, number one to give back to the community, and for recruitment," Arnold told News Channel 11. The program's first two students, seniors Dustin Gragg from Sullivan East and Alexander Thompson from Dobyns-Bennett, got started this semester. The students spend 20 to 25 hours of their week at Kingsport's fire stations as part of a paid internship.
