Chief Sam Peña: Houston firefighters to receive minimum 18% pay raise over next 3 fiscal years VIDEO: Houston Fire Chief Samuel Peña said firefighters are receiving a minimum 18% pay raise to keep talent and be competitive among cities across the nation. Pena said the effort stemmed from a total compensation study commissioned by the city, which showed the city was behind in the market. The pay increases -- for every rank in the department -- are addressed in City Council Agenda Item 11 Ordinance and are expected to roll out over the next three fiscal years -- 2022, 2023 and 2024 with the first 6% increase scheduled for Thursday. "This has been something that we've needed for a long time. We want to be competitive in our industry and this put's us on the right path," said Chief Pena. Captains are expected to receive a higher increase of about .66% over the years, Peña said. KPRC-TV NBC 2 HOUSTON Central Texas fire departments in need of volunteers, crucial to fire service Fire season is practically here and that means Central Texas firefighters could be very busy soon, increasing the need for volunteer firefighters. Here in Central Texas we have a large number of volunteer fire departments with volunteer firefighters that put their lives on the line everyday. Fire departments like the one in Copperas Cove, would not be able to do their job if it weren't for the brave men and women willing to volunteer and risk their lives for the community. In fact, the majority of firefighters around the country are protecting the community and asking for nothing in return. "In the United States Fire Service, volunteers are the life blood of the fire service," said Gary Young, Deputy Fire Chief for Copperas Cove FD. "The overwhelming majority of firefighters in the fire service are volunteer fire fighters." KXXV-TV ABC 25 WACO Denison Fire Rescue to extend outsourced EMS contract The city of Denison said they plan to continue outsourcing LifeNet EMS as part of the Denison Fire Rescue team. Denison fire chief Gregg Loyd announced at last week's annual budget retreat that they plan to continue contracting with LifeNet EMS. "We've been fortunate to be able to witness what they can do firsthand and work with them for a year and a half and I think that brought a level of comfort," said Loyd. Two years ago they signed a temporary contract with LifeNet EMS while sending new hires to paramedic school. Chief Gregg Loyd said they've struggled to keep trained paramedics from leaving for the Metroplex. "We're not able to maintain in a state of flux for that long to wait for that to happen, so it's not really realistic for us to think we can compete close enough to prevent that draw and that pull from the Metroplex," said Loyd. KXII-TV CBS 12 SHERMAN Jacksboro Fire Department to hold fireworks event VIDEO: People are already starting to load up on fireworks ahead of the Fourth of July holiday, even if they can't fire them within city limits. The Jacksboro Fire Department is letting people commemorate our nation's birthday safely. They're holding an event at Jacksboro Lake, where people can fire them high in the sky without having to worry about hurting themselves or others. "It helps keep the fireworks from being popped out in the county itself, and it kind of confines everybody to one spot," Jacksboro Fire Chief Jeremy Jennings said. "It lets them get rid of their fireworks, have fun with them where it is a controlled environment so we don't start fires out in the county somewhere." The event will take place Sunday from 7 p.m. to midnight and is open to the public. There will be three to four fire units at the lake to monitor everything. KAUZ-TV CBS 6 WICHITA FALLS Person smoking while on oxygen caused house fire in Longview One person was injured following a house fire Tuesday evening in Longview. According to the Longview Fire Department, around 5:30 p.m., crews responded to 102 Reel Rd., near Pine Tree Elementary School, on reports of a structure fire. When officials arrived on scene, they found a one-story house with fire coming from the front. The fire was brought under control within about five minutes. The cause of the fire was determined to be a resident smoking while using an oxygen tank. The resident was taken to a local hospital with smoke inhalation and burns. KYTX-TV CBS 19 TYLER Unit at San Antonio apartment complex damaged after kitchen fire Residents of an apartment complex on the West Side were able to escape injury after a fire on Wednesday. San Antonio firefighters responded just before noon at the complex in the 3200 block of Timber View Drive, not far from Culebra and Reed roads. SAFD spokesperson Joe Arrington said the fire started in the kitchen of one of the units. The flames were contained to one unit. A few people were checked out by paramedics, but no one appeared to be seriously injured, Arrington said. KSAT-TV ABC 12 SAN ANTONIO PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

VIDEO: 17 Injured in California After Planned Detonation Of Seized Illegal Fireworks Ends In Explosion Seventeen people were injured Wednesday evening after a planned police detonation of seized illegal fireworks ended in an explosion in South Los Angeles. The Los Angeles Police Department truck explosion occurred at about 7:40 p.m. at East 27th and San Pedro streets. Nine LAPD officers and one Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives officer was taken to nearby hospitals, along with six civilians. A tenth LAPD officer was hurt, but was not hospitalized, according to the L.A. Fire Department. Names of the injured were not immediately released. Those hospitalized included 11 men and five women, all ranging in age between 42 and 85, according to LAFD. In a news conference early Thursday morning, the LAPD described all the injuries as mild to moderate in nature. KCAL-TV CBS 2 LOS ANGELES New firefighters in Nevada appreciate that gender doesn't factor into job Two of Boulder City's newest reserve firefighters joined the department for a unique reason: Their fellow firefighters treat them like equals and not like women. "You just feel like one of them," said Sarah Mitre about the Boulder City Fire Department. "I really appreciate that. I want to be a firefighter, not a female firefighter. I don't want to be any different." Mitre and Casey Jones were members of the 2020-2021 class of the fire department's reserve program fire academy. The reserve academy provides training for men and women who want to become firefighters. Once completed, the reserve firefighters are able to work several shifts per month at the Boulder City station. "Three years ago I would have said, ‘No, I don't want to go into fire,'" said Jones. "Boulder City has absolutely changed that." BOULDER CITY REVIEW Minnesota firefighters receive ballistic gear as an added layer of protection VIDEO: We all know being a first responder can be a dangerous job, but some firefighters are now dealing with new safety concerns. "It's a dangerous job but it's a very rewarding job," said Cpt. Tom Beaver, with the St. Paul Fire Department. It's a responsibility the men and women of the St. Paul Fire Department don't take lightly. Being one of the first to respond during emergencies. "It's risky, unnerving," said Cpt. Beaver. A critical part of that response effort is being equipped with the proper protective gear to keep those who risk it all on our behalf safe. From structure fires to mass shootings, fire fighters are there. "They're coming to treat those victims," said Jake Skifstad, Founder of SHIELD 616. He went on to say, "our firefighters, our paramedics, a lot of them don't have anything - not even a soft vest." Which is why Skifstad is making it his mission to supply fire departments near and far with an added layer of protection at a time when violent crimes are at an all-time high. KARE-TV NBC 11 MINNEAPOLIS 3,000-horsepower fireboat ready to protect cruise ships at Florida's Port Canaveral VIDEO: One of the most powerful pieces of firefighting equipment in Central Florida got underway with the shattering of a champagne bottle on Wednesday. The 3,000-horsepower fireboat is ready to stand guard over the rebirth of the cruise industry. It takes a huge set of water cannons to protect a ship like the 6,500 passenger Carnival Mardi Gras. However, the biggest and latest of cruise ships would need more than water if a fire broke out. The Mardi Gras is the first cruise ship in the U.S. to be fueled by liquefied natural gas, LNG. Putting out an LNG fire is a different sort of job. "It's very easy to control if you have the right stuff. And now we have the right stuff," Port Canaveral Fire Chief Dave Sargeant said. That's because the port has a new fireboat that is armed with the right stuff. WESH-TV NBC 2 ORLANDO Virginia first responders create splash park for kids to ‘cool off' in sweltering temps VIDEO: It was a steamy day across Central Virginia on Wednesday and many were looking for a little relief from the heat. First responders in Petersburg came up with a unique way to keep kids cool. As temperatures flirted with the 100 degree mark, the city's police and fire department created their own splash park giving kids the chance to slide into summer with some fun. Around 1 p.m., firefighters and police officers gathered at Jefferson South of the James, an apartment complex, turned on the fire hose and set up a slip ‘n slide. Lilith Book is four years old and was standing outside awaiting the fire trucks arrival. "It's really hot. Like 97 degrees. I'm so excited," she exclaimed as she jumped up and down. Book's brother, Liam, was standing right beside her and said, "Me too. I wanna play on the water slide. I'm excited." WRIC-TV ABC 8 RICHMOND PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
