Two firefighters hospitalized after cigarette-sparked fire in Wood County Two East Texas firefighters are hospitalized after responding to a large grass fire that's thought to have been sparked by a cigarette tossed from a vehicle. Five Wood County fire departments responded Wednesday to the area of Farm to Market Road 14 at FM 3900, between Hawkins and Holly Lake Ranch. Two volunteers, an assistant chief from the Perryville Volunteer Fire Department and an Ogburn VFD firefighter, were transported to a hospital with heat-related issues. Temperatures in the area were above 100 degrees at the time, with heat indices even higher. "Well for all you smokers out there still throwing your cigarettes out the window. This is what happens after you carelessly throw it out," Peryville VFD posted on social media. KLTV ABC 7 TYLER Fire department's only female firefighter saves Lubbock County home singlehandedly Haley Loveless describes herself as the "little sister" of the West Carlisle Volunteer Fire Department, but her impact on the Lubbock County community is huge. A public servant by blood and by heart, she fights fires in her free time. To pay the bills, she works as a 911 dispatcher for the City of Lubbock, making sure other firefighters respond effectively. When she has time in between, she becomes a triple first-responder, serving as an Emergency Medical Technician for the City of Shallowater. That dedication shined through when West Carlisle VFD scrambled to contain April's monstrous Research Fire. As high winds spread burning embers across dry fields, the grass fire jumped streets and railroad tracks faster than they could respond. Her department's resources spread thin across 61 acres, Loveless took it upon herself to mount a solo attack on the rapidly-spreading fire. KLBK-TV CBS 13 LUBBOCK Arson investigators trying to figure out what sparked south side San Antonio house fire San Antonio fire investigators are working to determine the cause of a fire on the city's South Side early Thursday morning. The fire was called in around 12:15 a.m. at an abandoned home in the 600 block of Monticello Court, not far from South New Braunfels Avenue and East Southcross. Firefighters said when they arrived, they found the building fully engulfed in flames. The fire was knocked down quickly, and without incident. Fire officials said the cause of the fire is not currently known. No injuries were reported. The San Antonio Fire Department and San Antonio Police Department both responded to the call. A damage estimate was not disclosed. KSAT-TV ABC 12 SAN ANTONIO Heat wave making it harder for firefighters to put out fire near Falfurrias It's been about four days since firefighters from across the Coastal Bend and the Rio Grande Valley started fighting a 6,000 acre fire about 30 miles away from Falfurrias. James DeGrazia, Texas A&M Forest Service fire coordinator for the Edinburg regional area said the fire is at least 85 percent contained. He said fighting the fire in extreme heat can be especially dangerous because as they get closer to the fire, it gets hotter. "It makes it hard for equipment — not only to operate and stay cool while being around a fire, which generates an uptick of anywhere up to 150 degrees," DeGrazia said. He said the fire should be out in the next few days, but they are still taking precautions. KZTV CBS 10 CORPUS CHRISTI Cat killed, 2 dogs rescued after large fire ravages through northwest side home, San Antonio Fire Department says A cat was killed and two dogs were pulled from a burning home on the city's Northwest Side on Wednesday afternoon, according to the San Antonio Fire Department. The fire happened around 4:40 p.m. in the 5500 block of Slattery, near Wurzbach Road. A passerby noticed smoke coming from the back of the home and notified the fire department. The homeowners were not home at the time of the fire. At least 18 fire crews arrived and fought the flames, which started in the back of the home. Firefighters were able to get control of the flames in roughly 20 minutes. Neighbors helped rescue a dog from the home and another dog was pulled out by firefighters, who then administered oxygen to it. Both are expected to recover. However, one cat died in the fire, according to SAFD. No other injuries were reported. KSAT-TV ABC 12 SAN ANTONIO Wichita Falls targeted for wildfire danger, ERCOT warns of outages as heat wave worsens Extremely hot daytime temperatures mean more than just discomfort. The Texas Electrical grid is again warning of power shortages and the Texas A&M Forest Service warned the Wichita Falls area is at high risk for wildfires. "Continued triple digit temperatures and dry conditions will reduce the moisture in vegetation across the landscape, increasing the possibility for wildfire ignitions to occur this week," the forest service warned. The service said the fire environment will support an increased potential for large wildfires that are resistant to control in seven parts of the state, including Wichita Falls. Over the past 10 days, Texas A&M Forest Service resources have responded to 98 wildfires that burned 17,763 acres across the state. This includes 43 new wildfires from July 8-10. Firefighters were working several wildfires across the state on Wednesday, including the Deerhead Fire in Baylor County, which was 75 percent contained after burning 500 acres. Helicopter falls from the sky, lands on Washington teen who saves pilot VIDEO: Logan Schneider thought his day was done on his family's cherry farm last week when it was really just beginning. "Looking at what happened, I don't know how we both got out," he said. Logan was riding a tractor in the orchard about 12 miles north of Wenatchee last week when a helicopter hit overhead powerlines and landed on top of him. "I was pinned against the steering wheel, stuck with the nose of the helicopter sitting right behind me," the recent high school graduate explained. Logan freed himself from the wreckage only to find the helicopter pilot trapped -- dangling upside down in his harness. "I heard him screaming," said Logan. "I looked and I saw him upside down hanging. Fire was everywhere. When I was in the moment I really wasn't thinking. I was just doing." Logan was able to free the pilot. KING-TV NBC 5 SEATTLE Homelessness to firefighter: Utah man shares his journey from off the streets VIDEO: Every day at work, Dyllon Ryser gets to help people. Whether it's fighting fires, providing urgent medical care, or sometimes offering a pep talk on the side. "Good job. Keep up the hard work, man. Keep your head up, OK," Ryser said to a man needing first aid. "I know it's hard out there on the streets." All things that he says he loves doing with the Ogden Fire Department. "Just having that opportunity to see every situation and trying to help somebody is just the greatest." But part of what makes Ryser good at what he does is where he used to be. "I was 10 years old when that happened. My parents divorced and then my dad had nowhere to go, so he became homeless," he recalled. Ryser grew up on the streets of Salt Lake City in the Rio Grande area. "I had two younger brothers and one older sister. We kind of watched after them," he said. KSL-TV NBC 5 SALT LAKE CITY Arson dogs come from around the US to train in Maine Maine is home to one of the most important training sites in the country for law enforcement canines. That's according to the people who pay for all of it. State Farm Insurance has been funding arson dog purchasing and training since 1993. Heather Paul, the company's national arson dog program coordinator, said the average residential house fire costs them $45,000 to insure. Each accelerant-detecting canine costs about $25,000 to buy and train. As they try to catch and deter insurance fraud, it's easy math to comprehend. "Arson is one of the most difficult crimes to solve," Paul explained. "The evidence burns up. It's a dirty, smelly environment. And, as a human, we don't have that superpower sense of smell." She added that the dogs are equally useful for ruling out arson as the cause of a fire. WCSH-TV NBC 6 PORTLAND Illinois fire department looks ahead to fall recruitment using new methods Peoria Fire Department is gearing up for fall recruitment by thinking outside the box to attract talent. Interim Fire Chief Shawn Sollberger said recruitment numbers have been down for a while. "What we're used to is hundreds of people wanting to be a firefighter, and now we're running into dozens of people wanting to be firefighter," he said. "We're actually cautiously optimistic to be honest with you, and we've done a lot of recruiting efforts with our recruiting team." In an effort to reach a wider audience, Sollberger said they are using new recruitment tactics, like the City of Peoria Career Fair this fall. "It would be a unique and just really trying to get focused on people wanting to be employees for the City of Peoria," he said. Another method is using social media.
