Good as gold: McKinney Fire Department wins award for cardiac call response time A gold award is "something good" and for the McKinney Fire Department, the award means it's one of the best at helping patients survive a heart attack. McKinney firefighters respond to cardiac calls in about three minutes on average. The goal is to get the person to the hospital as quickly as possible for the team there to do whatever is needed to fix the heart. For their work, the American Heart Association awarded McKinney the Mission: Lifeline EMS Gold Award. Mission: Lifeline is the Dallas-based Heart Association's national initiative to reduce barriers to prompt treatment - starting from when 911 is called, to EMS transport and continuing through hospital treatment and discharge. KXAS-TV NBC 5 FORT WORTH New Team USA baseball player is battling fires in Corpus Christi as her day job VIDEO: One former Coastal Bend softball player is still keeping her love for the sport of baseball alive by earning a spot on the Women's National Baseball Team roster. Valerie Perez was a star softball player for Calallen and the Islanders. She eventually became a Corpus Christi firefighter, but never gave up on her love for playing baseball just like her brothers. She has continued to train and practice, which eventually earned her a spot on the team, where she will soon compete against the best women baseball players in the world. "My hope in this, as well as being the only one from Texas, is to bring some recognition to women's baseball," she said. "I know there's a lot of girls out there that are playing baseball with the guys from T ball, even through high school, and my teammates play in college with the guys." KIII-TV ABC 3 CORPUS CHRISTI Wise County resident buys his own brush truck to help fight fires When a fire broke out on his neighbor's property, Craig Browne was more than prepared to jump into action. Browne bought a fire truck from the Frisco Fire Department several years ago. When living in Sierra Nevada, California, fires were abundant. This is where he and his neighbors decided to do what they could to help. "Fires were every year, and California had new rules come in that for a volunteer fire department you had to be a full fledged EMT which just decimated our volunteer fire department," Browne said. "So with a couple of neighbors, we decided we should get some equipment to do structure protection on the forest. We moved to Texas and I was going to sell the truck, but where we sit, our response time from Alvord can be half an hour." On July 16 around 6 p.m., a fire broke out near Browne's property. THE MESSENGER North Tarrant County grass fire burns 184 acres, 100% contained VIDEO: On Wednesday afternoon. a grass fire sparked off Bonds Ranch Road in north Fort Worth. It was located near the 3200 block of W. Bonds Ranch Road between Eagle Mountain Lake to the west and Hicks Airfield to the east. The fire was directly north of the new Eagle Mountain High School. "A construction company here that's doing underground cabling they were cutting some rebar up," Tarrant County Fire Marshal Randy Renois said. "Sparks and it took off from this corner here and took off to the top of the hill." The weather was not cooperating with firefighting efforts. "The wind shifted a little bit and split the fire in two different ways headed towards the northeast and headed towards the northwest which made it difficult," Renois said. EMT stabbed by man in ambulance outside hospital in New York VIDEO: A man has been arrested after he allegedly stabbed an EMT Wednesday night in Manhattan. Officials say 48-year-old Rudy Garcia was picked up at 94th Street and Amsterdam at around 8:50 p.m., after a call about cardiac arrest. The ambulance was on 59th Street when Garcia allegedly pulled out a knife and stabbed the EMT multiple times in the abdomen and leg, officials said. Authorities say the 25-year-old EMT is expected to survive. Cell phone video shows emergency workers gathered by her side. An officer is shown picking up what appears to be the knife used in the stabbing. Officials say the EMT was initially treated at Mount Sinai West, before she was taken to Mount Sinai Morningside. "It's hard to think that someone that is an EMT is going to be hurt in the ambulance. It's so difficult to understand," one witness said. WABC-TV ABC 7 NEW YORK Brass fire connectors are being targeted by thieves in some Philadelphia neighborhoods VIDEO/PHOTOS: Important pieces of fire prevention equipment have once again become the target of thieves in some Philadelphia neighborhoods. Brass Fire Department Connections (FDC) are being stolen throughout Northern Liberties and Fishtown neighborhoods. Authorities suspect they are being sold for scrap, creating an expensive and potentially hazardous problem for home and business owners. Matt Dunphy keeps a keen eye on his connector stolen in the middle of the night. His security cameras captured surveillance video of one of the suspects. You can hear the sound of the brass as the thief causally walked away with the connector located outside of Dunphy's home on Callowhill Street. KIII-TV ABC 3 CORPUS CHRISTI 7 more heat-related deaths confirmed in Arizona, California VIDEO: A swath of the United States is facing a dangerous combination of extreme heat and wildfire smoke this week. More than 85 million Americans across 15 states -- from California to Florida -- are under heat alerts for Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service. The consecutive days of record-high temperatures combined with high overnight temperatures makes this heat wave especially threatening, as the longer it lasts, the more dangerous it becomes. Six more heat-related deaths were confirmed in Maricopa County, Arizona, on Wednesday, the Maricopa County Department of Public Health announced. A total of 18 people in Maricopa County, which includes the cities of Phoenix, Mesa and Scottsdale, have died this summer of heat complications, and another 69 deaths are under investigation, health officials said.
