Get a sneak peek at construction of the new, state-of-the-art training facility for the Plano Fire-Rescue Department PHOTOS: When Laddin Gillespie gives a tour of the new, state-of-the-art fire training center under construction in north Plano on McDermott Road, he does so with the excitement of a someone getting ready to open a big gift on Christmas morning. But, like the rest of the fire and rescue department, Gillespie has to wait a little longer to rip off the packaging on the new Plano Fire-Rescue Training Center, which is scheduled to open in the fall of 2022. Funding for the project, $14.8 million total, came from the 2017 bond approved by voters. On a warm Wednesday in July, Gillespie, a training firefighter with the Plano Fire-Rescue Department, along with Training Captain Andy Lane gave the Plano Star Courier a sneak peek of the Plano Fire-Rescue Training Center. You can see the construction under way and nearing completion from McDermott Road. KFDA-TV CBS 10 AMARILLO Chalk Mountain Fire that destroyed 16 homes further contained near Glen Rose A wildfire that has blackened 10 1/2 square miles (27 square kilometers) of North Texas, destroying 16 homes, reached 40% containment Wednesday, double what it had been the day before, officials said. The multi-agency firefighting team fighting the Chalk Mountain Fire 50 miles (80 kilometers) southwest of Fort Worth said it had completed a fire line around the fire Wednesday. However, the lines are sufficient only to be impervious to further spreading in 40% of the fire zone, primarily its southern reaches. In a statement, team officials said work continues to improve the lines around the rest of the zone while also attacking stubborn hot spots within the zone's interior. No injuries have been reported. Extreme drought combined with wind gusts and temperatures topping 100 degrees has resulted in destructive wildfires across North Texas. KSAT-TV ABC 12 SAN ANTONIO Firefighters battle commercial fire in Wichita Falls The Wichita Falls Fire Department worked a structure fire early Thursday morning at Alsco Linens. When firefighters arrived to Alsco Linens around 2:25 a.m., they met with a building representative who confirmed there was a fire inside the building, but he could not confirm where inside the building. Firefighters were able to locate the fire inside the loading dock on the East side of the building. The fire was in the laundry storage area where large bags of biohazard laundry were stored on an overhead conveyor. Officials said the overhead sprinklers were activated and helped contain the fire. The were not able to put out the fire completely because the overhead bags on the conveyor blocked the sprinklers. Surveillance video provided by the Alsco Linens facility manager, shows that the fire was caused by an exothermic reaction from the grease and oil on the rags in the basket. KFDX-TV NBC 3 WICHITA FALLS Crews battle 90-acre grass fire in Buda, 30-acre fire near Hornsby Bend The Hays County Sheriff's Office says that first responders are working to put out a grass fire in Buda. The fire is estimated at around 90 acres. The fire, which is now being called the Armbruster fire, was reported on FM 967 near Coves of Cimarron in Buda. That's in northwest Buda off of FM 1626. Fire crews from all over Hays County took part in the efforts, as well as STAR Flight. Helicopters and small planes are assisting in the response. San Marcos, Kyle, Wimberley, Manchaca and Hays County officials were among the crews who helped the Buda Fire Department in their response. The Texas A&M Forest Service was also called in to help put out the fire as the flames burn through a wooded area, making it hard for engines and hoses alone to manage the fire. The forest service brought in bulldozers and air support to help battle the flames. KVUE-TV ABC 24 AUSTIN Trent Volunteer Fire Department receives grant to help purchase new brush truck, increase firefighting capabilities Through a grant, the Trent Volunteer Fire Department (Trent VFD) was able to make the purchase of something much needed during these hot, windy Summer months – a new small brush truck. Trent VFD was granted $100,000 through the Rural Volunteer Fire Department Grant Assistance Program. According to a release from the Texas A&M Forest Service, the small brush truck will aid in brush, grass and structure fires, along with wrecks. It also comes equipped with a 400-gallon water tank, and can hold 10 gallons of foam. Fire Chief Anthony Beaver with Trent VFD said the new addition will help the volunteer firefighters and increase wildfire response capabilities. "The quality of this setup is dramatically different than our previous brush truck," said Chief Beaver. "It will help our department and community so much." With temps in the 90's, firefighters battle 3-alarm blaze at Washington apartment complex VIDEO/PHOTOS: On one of the hottest days of the year so far, firefighters were working Wednesday evening to extinguish a three-alarm fire at a sprawling apartment complex that sent plumes of flames and thick black smoke billowing into the air. Firefighters were called to the apartment complex, named Terra Apartments and located in the 35200 block of 21st Avenue SW, shortly before 4:30 p.m. for a call of a resident trapped in a burning apartment, South King Fire Capt. Brad Chaney said. A firefighter suffered heat exhaustion and had to be treated but no other injuries were reported from the blaze. Video from the scene showed firefighters rescuing at least one woman from an upper floor of the apartment building by escorting her down a fire truck ladder. Investigators said the woman was rescued shortly after the roof of the building had collapsed. KOMO-TV ABC 4 SEATTLE California city appoints first woman ever to become city's fire marshal The city of Oakland has a new fire marshal, Felicia Bryant, who is making history as the first woman to ever hold the position. "I was born and raised in Oakland," she said. Bryant is an 18-year veteran of the department and a trailblazer, just like her great-grandfather, Bill Williams. He was one of the first Black firefighters hired by the Oakland Fire Department in 1920. There's even an oral history of Williams at the Oakland Museum archives. "Growing up, I was always inspired by that story and I was like, it's in my blood," said Bryant. Bryant started her career as a firefighter working at stations in east Oakland, and driving an engine. "One of the biggest joys I had when I was on the engine was seeing little girls. It was just a little girl to look up and be like, Wow, she's a woman firefighter she's a girl like me. And I get to give hope to people who don't think it's for them or who may feel like I can't achieve that," said Bryant. KPIX-TV CBS 5 SAN FRANCISCO Surprising Discovery: 1967 Indiana fire truck found in Mexico PHOTOS: 2020 Indiana University Graduate Olivia Rusk was in Hidalgo Mexico earlier this year as an English Teaching Assistant for COMEXUS Fulbright-Garcia Robles. One day she was out exploring nearby towns. When she got off of a bus, she noticed an old fire truck sitting in a nearby parking lot. "My dad loves old vehicles so I went over to get some photos to send to him," she said. "When I got closer, I was shocked," continued Rusk. "The markings on the truck said ‘Hartford City Fire Department!" "How did a fire truck from Hartford City end up in a parking lot in a small town in Mexico, thousands of miles away," she thought. "I grew up in Fort Wayne. My dad now lives in Marion, and we're familiar with the area," explained Rusk. "I sent the photos to my father and he contacted former Hartford City Fire Chief, Ron Parrott."
