Houston's legendary Firehouse Saloon burns in massive fire after closing in November 2020 VIDEO: After closing its doors for good at the end of 2020, the legendary honky-tonk Firehouse Saloon almost burned to the ground early Thursday morning in southwest Houston. The building has been abandoned for some time. The Houston Fire Department said that it responded to the former saloon located in the 5900 block of Southwest Freeway near Fountain View around 1:45 a.m., after several drivers called 911 to report thick smoke. Firefighters could even see the smoke from their fire station. District Chief Jason Wells said that when crews arrived, the majority of the building was up in flames. They were able to save a small warehouse on the east side of the empty building, but that structure appeared abandoned as well. No one was injured. While HFD said that the building was secured and had fencing, it's still unclear at this time how the massive fire started. KHOU-TV CBS 11 HOUSTON One adult and three children escape Abilene house fire At approximately noon Wednesday, the Abilene Fire Department responded to a residential structure fire located in the 5300 block of Wagon Wheel Avenue. Crews arrived to find heavy smoke and flames billowing from the garage area of the structure and discovered the fire had spread to two vehicles. One adult and three children were home at the time of the fire and were able to get out of the residence without injury. The fire extended into the attic area and garage area only. The interior of the residence suffered smoke and water damage. The Red Cross was notified and will be assisting the residents. The cause of the fire was determined to be and accidental electrical failure. Value of damage is estimated at $80,000. KIDY-TV FOX 6 SAN ANGELO At least 11 fire hydrants in Marfa are malfunctioning, records show When firefighters for the Marfa Volunteer Fire Department last inspected all of the fire hydrants in and around town in October 2019, they reported that 11 of them were either malfunctioning or inoperable, according to documents obtained by The Big Bend Sentinel through an open records request. In the past year and half, none of them have been repaired, said City Manager Mandy Roane. "Our former Public Works director [Jeff Boyd] was given the list of faulty hydrants in 2019, but did not conduct repairs. Additionally, repairs weren't conducted in 2020," she said. "With so much shut down because of COVID and Public Works being short-staffed, they weren't able to complete them." The actual number of malfunctioning hydrants may have risen since the 2019 report. BIG BEND SENTINEL Bandera County: Castle Lake Ranch Fire Department holds training The Castle Lake Ranch Fire Department trained with the Air Life San Antonio team of Aaron Beal, Aaron Bostel and Cynthia Garcia on Saturday, June 5, at the Fire House in Castle Lake. The Air Life team out of Kerrville provided training to the department in traffic safety and how to set up a landing zone for an medevac helicopter. Setting up a traffic break at a vehicle wreck is one of the most hazardous situations that firefighters face. Stopping traffic along a busy highway can be extremely dangerous. Fire Chief Paul Mill er remarked, "This is great training. We don't often get call outs to structure fires, we mostly assist with wildland fires and traffic stops." The department makes a point to train frequently in these important skills, offering training once a month for its members. BANDERA BULLETIN El Paso firefighters lead bagpipe band You see them at special events, whether it'd be walking in the Thanksgiving parade or paying tribute at memorial services, a group of El Paso firefighters started a bag piping band. "El Paso Firefighters Pipes and Drums" started back in 2015 and El Paso Firefighters Pipes and Drums pipe major, Andy Olivarez, has been part of the band since the very beginning. "When we first started, a lot of people – we'd go play somewhere and people would come up to us and go ‘you know what I've never heard bagpipes in person' and its kind of hard to think about but I guess a lot of people never heard it." The band is made up of volunteers that are current, retired, or family of the El Paso firefighters. Olivarez said that you don't need to know how to play drums or bagpipes, as long as you're willing to learn they will teach you how to play the instrument. KTSM-TV NBC 9 EL PASO PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

Large fire burns at vehicle recycling business in South Carolina VIDEO: Firefighters are battling a large fire which broke out Wednesday afternoon at a Cherokee County vehicle recycling facility. The fire happened at Carguts just off Highway 5 near US-29 just east of Blacksburg. No injuries have been reported in the fire but one firefighter was treated for heat exhaustion. It is not known what caused the fire. Crews are also checking air quality in the area. Ten different fire agencies have responded to the scene with water tankers also being brought in to help. The Town of Blacksburg said water customers may experience low or no water pressure due to the large amount of water being used to extinguish the fire. WSPA-TV CBS 7 SPARTANBURG Fire Department Running Out Of Time To Save ‘Spirit Of Oklahoma' Fire Truck VIDEO: Thursday is the deadline to save the Spirit of Oklahoma fire truck. While the fundraiser is still thousands of dollars short, there is new, last-minute hope that the truck will be rescued. The truck symbolizes a bond between New York and Oklahoma firefighters after two terror attacks. If the Calera Fire Department can't come up with the money in time, a museum may step in to front the rest of the money, but there are no guarantees. The first page of the Spirit of Oklahoma fire truck's story was written 26 years ago - with the blood and tears shed by Oklahoma and New York City fire rescue crews in the aftermath of the Oklahoma City Bombing. Years later, a new chapter was written in the ashes of the September 11th attacks. KWTV-DT CBS 9 OKLAHOMA CITY 11-year-old raises $112K to buy CPR devices for four Michigan fire departments PHOTOS: Two years after creating a business plan with marker and construction paper, 11-year-old Lucas Vetter has raised $112,000 to purchase life-saving CPR machines for local fire departments. When Lucas was 9 years old, he visited Howell Area Fire Department with his family, which is where he first saw the LUCAS CPR device. LUCAS, which stands for Lund University Cardiac Assist System, is a machine that provides automatic chest compressions to a patient. The machines prevent strain on first responders and keep their hands free to help more people. Each device costs roughly $16,000, which is a barrier for smaller fire departments. "The lieutenant showed me the LUCAS device and told me how much they helped and how much they cost," Lucas said. "Then I thought, what if I could help get that for them?" LIVINGSTON DAILY Chief: Indiana apartment fire highlights weakness in building codes VIDEO: Fire officials say a massive apartment fire two months ago in Greenwood highlighted a weakness in Indiana building codes that they would like to see changed. The fire displaced 59 residents during the overnight hours and resulted in injuries to one civilian and one firefighter. Investigators determined the April 14 fire at the Meridian Oaks apartment originated on an outdoor, second floor balcony. While the exact cause is not known, it's believed that some kind of human error, possibly a cigarette butt or other discarded material, ignited the wooden balcony before the flames spread to vinyl siding on the building's exterior wall. "It went right up the vinyl siding," said White River Township Fire Chief, Jeremy Pell. "Behind that is a Styrofoam insulation, and from there it went into the attic. Fire grows more quickly if it has better fuel and vinyl siding and Styrofoam board is great fuel." Pell said the construction of the building was in line with Indiana building codes. WXIN-TV FOX 59 INDIANAPOLIS 7 years ago, rare twin tornadoes ripped apart Nebraska town VIDEO: Rare twin tornadoes barreled through the northeast Nebraska town of Pilger seven years ago today, killing two people, injuring 20 more and forever changing the lives of the nearly 350 people who called the town home.
