Home likely a total loss in San Antonio fire VIDEO: A fire that broke out on the North Side destroyed one home and significantly damaged another on Wednesday night, according to the San Antonio Fire Department. The fire was reported just before 11 p.m. in the 1700 block of Brandenburg Drive, not far from Brook Hollow Boulevard and Highway 281. Joe Arrington, a public information officer with SAFD, said it appeared that the fire started in the garage area but flames "expanded and grew very rapidly." By the time firefighters arrived at the home, it was fully engulfed in flames. Residents were able to escape, and no one was injured. Flames spread to a home next door and it sustained significant damage, Arrington said. Firefighters were able to prevent the fire from spreading to other homes. The house where the fire originated is likely a total loss, Arrington said. KSAT-TV ABC 12 SAN ANTONIO Nolan County: Rolling Pin Fire is 95 percent contained, Texas A&M Forest Service says Multiple fire agencies are battling a fire that broke out around 4 p.m. Wednesday in Nolan County. The Texas A&M Forest Service reports that as of 11:43 p.m. Wednesday, the Rolling Pin Fire in Nolan County had burned 150 acres and is 95 percent contained. The City of Sweetwater spokeswoman tells us the fire is south of the city on US Hwy 70 and County Road 214. According to a Facebook post from the Sweetwater Fire Department, volunteer fire departments from Nolan, Mary Neal and Lake Sweetwater are responding. The Nolan County Sheriff's Office is also helping at the scene. Authorities are asking drivers to avoid the area and find alternate routes. The Texas A&M Forest Service arrived on the scene about an hour after the fire was reported. There's no word on what started the fire or if the flames are threatening any structures. KIDY-TV FOX 6 SAN ANGELO Houston Fire Department sees spike in heat-related illness calls The Houston Fire Department is responding to more heat-related illness calls in June compared to previous months. "It is a significant increase in calls. It's shocking the amount of calls that we've jumped up to," said fire department spokesperson Firefighter Abby Cortez. Between June 1 and 23, firefighters received 416 calls for service due to the heat. Compare it with 99 calls in May and 38 in April. The trend isn't new but the sharp increase is, Cortez said. "We do always see a rise in heat-related calls with the rise in temperatures," said Cortez. "It just happens to be this summer came with a back and the temperatures are way up there and so are our calls." According to data shared with KPRC 2, last July the fire department received 455 high-temperature calls, the highest for the agency in five years. KPRC-TV NBC 2 HOUSTON Pediatric burn camp in Kerrville partners with firefighters to raise awareness for burn survivors The Texas Burn Survivor Society's annual pediatric burn camp returned after a three-year hiatus this past Sunday. With it comes a safe place for children and their siblings who have experienced trauma around burn injuries. The camp is held at the Texas Lions Camp in Kerrville. TBSS, which is based in San Antonio, is "dedicated to providing care, comfort, and essential services to the critically burned and their families as well as promoting fire safety and burn prevention education," a press release said. On Wednesday, campers were treated to a show-and-tell by local firefighters for Firefighter Day. The firefighters treated the campers to tours of their vehicles while helping the kids beat the heat with their firehose. The bond between the campers and firefighters is special, as they are often the first faces the children might see as their burn survivor journey begins. VIDEO: ‘Sk8 Liborius' church skate park in Missouri burns down St. Louis City firefighters battled a huge fire overnight at an old north city Catholic Church that was turned into an indoor skate park. The fire was so intense that the embers spread to a building two blocks away. What's left of the old St. Liborius Church is ‘Sk8 Liborius,' on the Hogan and North Market streets, until the huge fire gutted the building overnight. Fire crews are still dousing the building with water hours later after the original fire started. Crews got the call around 10:45 p.m. The fire quickly grew into four alarms with many crews responding to the scene. St. Louis Fire Chief Dennis Jenkerson shared that it is a very large building and embers were blowing everywhere. Jenkerson also said that in addition to fighting the flames, crews were also dousing nearby buildings, including newer homes, to make sure the embers did not catch those structures on fire. Jenkerson told FOX 2 that the fire started in the old rectory and got worse from there. KTVI-TV FOX 2 ST. LOUIS Engine 64 returns to Maryland county as ambassador for fire service PHOTOS: The anniversary of American independence has added significance this year for the Friends of Engine 64 Inc., a nonprofit that now owns the Hahn pumper that Chestertown Volunteer Fire Company put in service on July 4, 1983. What is known as Six-Four served Chestertown until 2010, when it was donated to a fire company in Brierfield for what would be a decade of added service for several communities in rural Alabama. Through a series of fortuitous coincidences, it has returned to Chestertown and currently occupies a bay in the building behind the Maple Avenue firehouse. Engine 64 will be reintroduced to Kent County next week in the annual Fourth of July parade in Rock Hall — 40 years to the day when it was put into service. KENT COUNTY NEWS - METERED SITE VIDEO: New Jersey State Police use helicopter to recover firefighters from river A dramatic water rescue unfolded in real time Wednesday afternoon in the Passaic River in Garfield, and CBS New York brought it to you live on television and online. With the Passaic River roaring around them, two first responders stood knee-deep in their Clifton Fire dingy. "It's thrilling, but not so much for the poor guys that are in the river," witness Bernard Gustafson said. The city says the two firefighters were trying to rescue three contractors who were trimming trees by the river around 3 p.m. when their boat gave out between Clifton and Garfield. While trying to save them, the firefighters' boat went over the Dundee Dam and stranded the two rescuers at the edge of Passaic Falls. "The current on the river is pretty rough right now ... and it didn't look like any help was coming right away," Gustafson said. Enter New Jersey State Police. Despite double red flag warnings, which mean no swimming is allowed in the Gulf, heavy rip currents led to the three drownings and dozens of rescues. National Weather Service statistics show that Panama City has had seven rip current-related deaths in the past nine days, more surf zone fatalities than any other beach in the U.S. in 2023. Saturday's victims were two men from Georgia, one 39 and the other 63, and a 68-year-old man from Michigan. Nexstar's WMBB reports that an additional two beachgoers also died in nearby Walton County, one on Thursday and the other on Saturday. Then on Tuesday, former NFL quarterback Ryan Mallett drowned off the shores of Destin, Florida, according to Nexstar's WKRG.
