Fire destroys historic Nutt House Hotel in Granbury VIDEO/PHOTO: An overnight fire destroyed a historic building in the Hood County city of Granbury, southwest of Fort Worth. Several fire departments teamed up to put out the flames at the Nutt House Hotel in the town square early Thursday morning. First responders had to shut down the streets of the square so that they could use ladder trucks to fight the fire from above. The flames appeared to consume much of the roof, burning for hours before firefighters got it under control. The hotel building, which was built by the Nutt brothers in 1893, had been closed for a major renovation. It was designated as a historical landmark in Texas. The cause of the fire is still unknown. No injuries were reported. KDFW-TV FOX 4 DALLAS Longview firefighters receive hazmat emergency training on railroads An East Texas fire department is preparing their firefighters for any train derailment hazard emergency. The Longview Fire Department has a hazmat team and tank car school in place in case of an emergency. Training section Chief Andy Parker said if a derailment were to happen with a tank filled with hazardous chemicals, it could cause allergic reactions and respiratory problems making it extremely dangerous. "Our biggest concern we have in Longview that we've come during our strategic planning is chlorine and anhydrous ammonia," Parker said. He said they have equipment and protocols in place in case of a scenario like that. Longview is one of just two cities in the U.S. with a tank car safety school in the program. Parker said first responders are able to see the intricate process of how tank cars are built inside and out. KYTX-TV CBS/CW+ 19 NACOGDOCHES Jeff Davis County: Solar Park Fire partially contained on day 4 as crews plan for extreme winds A wildfire being referred to as the Solar Park Fire, which broke out in the Davis Mountains due to a downed powerline this past Sunday during high winds, was still burning as of Wednesday afternoon, having grown to encompass 2,816 acres. As of press time, the fire was 50% contained and not actively expanding, said Jim Fowler, a spokesperson for the Fort Davis Fire Department. But both local volunteers as well as Texas A&M Forest Service (TFS) firefighting crews were remaining diligent as gusts up to 70 mph in the area coming from the southwest could result in fire spread over the next couple of days. Fowler said the Solar Park Fire arrived early in the fire season and has presented challenges to firefighters due to high winds. Crews will continue to work for however long it takes to see the fire fully extinguished, he said. THE BIG BEND SENTINEL Four Taylor County Volunteer Fire Departments to receive $17,500 each On March 4, Jim Ned, Buffalo Gap, Lawn, and Moro Volunteer Fire Departments will be awarded checks, thanks to the fundraising efforts of the Fire and Ice Feast. "For us, it's a huge blessing," said Brad Kerr, Fire Chief of Jim Ned's Volunteer Fire Department. Jim Ned VFD, like many others, relies solely on donations. "To sustain our department, we usually need at least a hundred thousand dollars or so a year," explained Kerr. The feast took place on February 4 and 5 at the Old Settlers Reunion Grounds. Saturday is solely dedicated to cooking. Anyone is welcome and the entire day is spent preparing the meals. Then Sunday, the 5th, those looking to attend the feast can purchase tickets, auction items and baskets. All the money goes toward the fire departments. KTAB-TV CBS 32 ABILENE Emergency crews respond to southwest Lubbock apartment fire Lubbock Fire Rescue crews were responding to an apartment fire in southwest Lubbock. The crews responded to the Cottages at Abbey Glen Apartments around 11:15 a.m. on Wednesday. Firefighters found an active fire in the attic space of a second story apartment, according to officials. Due to windy weather conditions, more firefighters were called to the scene in case the fire spread quickly. Most of the flames had been contained; however, portions of the fire were in hard-to-reach places in the attic area. Crews were working to gain access to these areas. No injuries have been reported and the number of damaged apartments has not yet been determined. The Fire Marshal's Office is investigating the fire. People were advised to avoid the area. KCBD-TV NBC 11 LUBBOCK Man reunites with Longview first responders who saved him when heart stopped at gym VIDEO: It's been sixteen weeks since Scott Gillispie went into cardiac arrest at an East Texas gym. Members of the Longview Fire Department performed life-saving measures. Wednesday night they reunited for the first time since that day. It was a normal day back in November at Crunch Fitness. Gillispie came to take his regular spin class. He deals with constant sinus drainage when spinning, so he moved his bike forward to avoid other classmates. But then, something felt off. "Twenty minutes in the class I started coughing, sinus drain, I choked, shut off the oxygen to my brain. My heart stopped. I grabbed the bicycle they said and fell over to my right. Thank God I moved that bike up so I didn't hit the lady to my right. I could've injured her and I could've probably broke my neck," said Gillispie. KLTV ABC 7 TYLER PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

ATF sending national response team to New York as the investigation into the fatal 4-alarm fire continues VIDEO: A spokesperson for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives confirmed to 2 On Your Side Wednesday night that a national response team (NRT) has been deployed to Buffalo. WGRZ was told by the spokesperson that the NRT will support various Buffalo agencies in the investigation of the fire. A 37-year-old Buffalo firefighter died during the response to the 4-alarm fire. The firefighter is a 3-year veteran and was a member of Engine 2. During a press conference earlier Wednesday afternoon, Buffalo Fire Commissioner William Renaldo said they believe construction crews were working at DC Theatricks, located at 745 Main St., early Wednesday morning. "Workers working on the exterior of the building with some torches, workouts, a mortar and some brick, and we think that may have been the cause because of the origin of the fire," Renaldo said. WGRZ-TV NBC 2 BUFFALO Related with Video: Buffalo firefighter dies while battling downtown blaze Florida fire rescue's day-off policy credited with attracting new recruits Alachua County Fire Rescue celebrated its largest pinning ceremony to date as the department welcomed nearly 45 new firefighters, EMTs and paramedics to the team. The new recruits are preparing to hit the road and serve the community, just in time for the implementation of the department's three-week Kelly Day. This happens to be one of the largest contracts in the department's history. This new policy, which provides one paid day off every three weeks, will take effect on May 22 and is partially responsible for the department's significant increase in staff. Alachua County Fire Rescue recognizes the efforts of its staff every day and acknowledges they deserve the time to recuperate and balance work in their lives. "There's a large push for work-life balance and mental health wellness for public safety professionals throughout the country," Fire Rescue Deputy Chief Jeff Taylor, 49, said. "We're no exception." WUFT-TV PBS 5 GAINESVILLE It's been 1 year since devastating house explosion in Missouri VIDEOS: Wednesday marked the one-year anniversary of a devastating home explosion in O'Fallon, Missouri. On March 1, 2022, a family was inside their home on Millers Court when they smelled gas. They managed to get out before an explosion across the street completely destroyed their home. The explosion was the result of a Gateway Fiber contractor striking a Spire natural gas line while digging to install fiber optic cables in the O'Fallon subdivision. The contractor stopped immediately and contacted Spire Energy, who quickly arrived, evacuated the area and attempted to repair the line. During the repair, an explosion occurred. About 40 homes, some as far as a mile away, were damaged by the gas explosion, and smoke could be seen for miles afterward. While there were no injuries, many were left hurting financially. KSDK -TV NBC 5 ST. LOUIS Medics housed at Texas airport for faster response times Austin-Travis County EMS on Wednesday began housing medics inside Austin-Bergstrom International Airport to improve response times as a record-high number of passengers are flying in and out. EMS officials said that due to the increase in call volume to the airport, ambulances were unable to respond to other emergencies in the areas. Chief Robert Luckritz said many options were considered to address the number of calls it receives at the airport and determined that most patients did not need to be taken to a hospital by ambulance. "We looked at some creative solutions with our partners at AUS and came up with the idea to house paramedics inside the airport," Luckritz said. "Which will not only dramatically decrease our response time but also lessen the impact these incidents have on our overall system." AUSTIN AMERICAN-STATESMAN - METERED SITE Massachusetts Town Could Train Police Officers as Volunteer Firefighters A community on the North Shore is discussing an idea that would have police officers trained to become volunteer firefighters. The goal of the proposal is to help with recent staffing shortages in Manchester-by-the-Sea, but the firefighters union doesn't think it's a good idea. "The police department is understaffed," union president Bob Cavender said. "They're currently trying to hire more people. I don't see how taking on additional roles and responsibilities related to fire outside of their daily scope is a viable option." The once-robust group of volunteer firefighters that were there in the past no longer exists, according to the town administrator of Manchester-by-the-Sea. Firefighters said the town hasn't had one in about two years. The idea, Federspiel said, would be to have the volunteers help out at larger scenes where more resources are needed, not to replace career firefighters.
