United plane engine catches fire minutes into flight from Houston airport VIDEO: A United flight from Houston to Fort Myers had to turn around Monday when one of the plane's engines caught fire. Several of the 167 passengers on board Flight 1118 took a video showing a line of flames shooting out of the engine. "I remember there was just this bright, flashing light that came through the window, and it sounded like a bomb went off, and then it was just a strobe of fire out the window," David Gruninger, who was on the connecting flight home to Florida with 15 of his friends after attending a wedding in Mexico, said. FlightAware data shows the Boeing 737 taking off from George Bush Intercontinental Airport at 6:40 p.m. It barely left the Houston area when it turned around at 6:52 p.m. "The plane was nosediving, and the pilot was bringing the plane back up," passenger Elliot Trexler said. KTRK-TV ABC 13 HOUSTON Corpus Christi Fire Chief explains firefighter deployment selection for historic wildfires VIDEO: The largest wildfire in Texas history ignited just one week ago. As officials in the Panhandle called on our Coastal Bend firefighters, only eight individuals part of the Rapid Extrication Module force were qualified to answer the call. "These members have taken extra training to understand the wildfire environment and also the equipment they're bringing with it," CCFD Fire Chief Brandon Wade said. The extensive training is mandatory as these type of massive wildfires greatly differ from large structural fires. "The terrain is extremely challenging so you're going into this case, canyons, large fields, thick brush, so trying to get into where the fire is at, that makes it difficult," Wade said. "On top of that, high winds that are pushing the fires at such incredible speeds." KIII-TV ABC 3 CORPUS CHRISTI Houston Fire Department: One person dies in garage apartment fire One person died Wednesday in a garage apartment fire near the Westchase area, Houston firefighters said. This happened on Artdale Street near the Westpark Tollway. Sgt. Clint Ponder with HPD's homicide division said a garage attached to the back of a house caught fire. Neighbors tried to get inside the garage to help a man who had been living there, but it was too intense, according to Sgt. Ponder. The man, who was in his 60s, died as a result of the fire. The victim had been living in the garage for about five years, according to Sgt. Ponder. Sgt. Ponder said at this time, they don't believe foul play is involved, but the proper agencies will continue to investigate his cause of death and the cause of the fire. No other injuries were reported. VIDEOS: Fire fills night sky as Ohio building goes up in flames Crews closed a portion of East 55th Street in Cleveland early Thursday morning due to an overnight fire at a building on Lake Court. 3News' Austin Love reported live from the scene all morning where the flames have since been extinguished. We're told 11 fire companies responded to the incident. While nobody was hurt, the building's roof reportedly collapsed. Lt. Mike Norman of the Cleveland Fire Department told 3News it was a "tricky spot to fight a fire" because of the nearby train tracks. The building is home to a commercial linen company known as The Clean Group. Their site says it's a company founded by former Cleveland Browns player Joe Jurevicius. The cause of the fire is under investigation. WKYC-TV NBC 3 CLEVELAND New York governor announces state's new volunteer firefighter stipend program VIDEO: Governor Kathy Hochul announced that there will be a new program designed to strengthen New York State's volunteer firefighter services. "These stipends will allow our firefighters to continue serving their communities while also being able to provide for their families." According to the governor's office, "Volunteer fire departments serve approximately nine million New Yorkers, nearly half of the State's population.
