Hopkins County native named world's strongest firefighter VIDEO: If your house was burning, would you want the strongest firefighter in the world there to help put it out? Well, that could happen in Texas since the man holding that title was raised in Hopkins County and works in Rockwall. Andrew Burton was declared the World's Strongest Firefighter at the Arnold Sports Festival held in Columbus, Ohio last weekend. And yes, it's that Arnold: Arnold Schwarzenegger. And Burton can lift stuff. Like a 225-pound fire hydrant. "It all started with, like, football workouts. You know, I was more entertained and had more fun chasing big numbers and things with the football workouts. And then I started power lifting," Burton said. The big numbers are, of course, big weights. But he thought the repetitive lifts might cause an injury, so he moved to strongman competitions. KLTV ABC 7 TYLER Kerrville Fire Department to offer whole blood infusions Pre-hospital trauma care for patients in Kerr County took a giant step this week as the Kerrville EMS, the city and county's provider, rolled out a new program that will provide the option of whole blood infusions by paramedics to critical patients before they are transported to the hospital. "We are excited about this program that has been in the works since last year, but a goal for the past three years," said Kerrville Fire Chief Eric Maloney late last week. The first supply of whole blood for Kerrville EMS was picked up Monday at the South Texas Blood and Tissue Center in San Antonio. The blood will be type O-Positive that can be used on any patient. "We will be able to use the blood on unstable trauma patients who are going into hypovolemic shock. Currently the only fluid we can infuse is saline. The paramedics are specially trained to administer blood in the pre-hospital setting which will significantly improve, or reduce, mortality in our most critical patients," Maloney said. HILL COUNTRY COMMUNITY JOURNAL - METERED SITE Tyler City Council to create 6 new firefighter positions, upgrade emergency center's technology The Tyler City Council approved on Wednesday the creation of six new firefighter positions and the upgrade of their Emergency Operations Center's (EOC) technology. City officials are receiving a $1,451,782.08 grant from the Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) Grant through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to create these new jobs. "The grant is a non-matching grant awarded to fund the salaries and benefits of the additional firefighter positions for three years, from March 17, 2023, to March 17, 2026. The grant allows $483,927.36 annually for the three-year period," the city of Tyler said. With the new firefighters, there will now be 168 people with the fire department. KETK-TV NBC 56 JACKSONVILLE Fort Worth's firefighters have a rich history, but not a museum; It's a matter of money The sound of a fire engine coming to the rescue in Fort Worth was a bit different a century ago. Instead of wailing sirens and blaring horns coming from a giant red truck, residents heard the clip-clop of hooves as horse-drawn carriages responded to requests for aid. These carriages were housed in fire stations made to accommodate the equine members of the department. To this day, one such building, Fire Station 12, sits empty along Prospect Avenue on the city's Northside. The Fort Worth Firefighters Museum Committee has big plans for the fire station, but it needs city approval. The committee, primarily made up of retired firefighters, has been working for several years to raise funds for the creation of a firefighter's museum in the station. What better place for a museum, they ask, than a fire station that is itself a part of the city's history? FORT WORTH REPORT Snakes, tarantulas and a crocodile rescued from house fire in Houston area VIDEO: A jaw-dropping picture posted on the East Montgomery County Fire Department Facebook page proves that firefighters need all of their flowers. These public servants -- or should we say animal servants for this story -- didn't let certain critters stop them from being the heroes they are. The department said it was called to a house fire in the area and within moments the call notes were updated to read 20 snakes, lizards, tarantulas and a crocodile will be secured inside the home. Yep, you read that right. Not only were these firefighters up against a possible blaze, but several exotic animals that could harm them. The department said they weren't expecting that but said animals aren't exempt from protection. "We will rescue your animals [too] if possible!! Everyone just thought we rescued cats in trees….. LOL," the department posted on Facebook. KHOU-TV CBS 11 HOUSTON Program at Saratoga Volunteer Fire Department helps train the next generation of firefighters in Hardin County The future of the Saratoga Volunteer Fire Department looks promising after trainings were held for the next generation of Southeast Texas firefighters. The volunteer-based department has held the Junior Volunteer Firefighter Program for the last 10 years. This program gives teenagers hands-on experience that comes with being a firefighter. Program participants between the ages of 15 to 18 meet Monday evenings, where they learn a range of life-saving skills, like observing wind direction. "If the fires coming towards you, you don't want to be where the fires going to be going. So, the easiest way to fight a brush fire is from where it's already burnt because it can't burn where it's already burnt," said Junior Volunteer, Doug Baker. Baker is currently a senior in high school. Back in the day, his grandfather was a fire chief, which encouraged him to join the Saratoga Junior Volunteer Program. VIDEOS: At least six homes burn down on Michigan's Harsens Island PHOTOS: Crews from St. Clair County are fighting a massive fire at multiple structures on St. Clair's Harsens Island on Wednesday. SkyFOX was overhead metro Detroit covering other stories when they spotted a massive plume of black smoke billowing up from Lake St. Clair. As they flew east, the picture grew clearer as several structures appeared to be burning. FOX 2 has learned that structures are cottages from The Old Club, a resort and yacht club on the island. The cottages line the St. Clair River and face toward Canada's Seaway Island. It appears a total of six homes burned to the ground in the massive fire and firefighting boats were on scene to help put out the fire at the homes. Harsens Island is a small strip of land with a population of around 1,000. It is accessible only by ferry. Del. Israel O'Quinn, R-Washington, proposed House Bill 2451 to require the executive director of the Virginia Department of Fire Programs to develop a training program for electric vehicle fires. The program must be developed and available by July, 1 2024, according to the bill. All firefighters, including volunteer firefighters, must complete the training by Dec. 1, 2025. The bill unanimously passed committees and both chambers. Sen. Bryce Reeves, R-Spotsylvania, asked for one clarification in the Senate General Laws and Technology committee, about whether the program would be offered both in-person and virtual. "I heard from some of my fire folks, and they were concerned that this is more time away," Reeves said. INDEPENDENT-MESSENGER FDNY couple trains for New York City Half Marathon VIDEO: An FDNY couple is preparing for the New York City Half Marathon later this month. Davon Howard is a firefighter at Ladder 162/Engine 304 in Queens Village; his wife, Natasha Howard, is an EMS Lieutenant at EMS Station 57 in Bed-Stuy. The pair met at the EMS Academy in 2007. "Honestly, I didn't really notice him, but I noticed he kept coming around and one day, we exchanged numbers and we went on a date and that was it," Natasha said. They already ran the New York City Marathon in 2021, but they're going into the half marathon with the same disciplined mindset. "We realized that we could face any obstacle put in front of us and it's also good for our job," Davon said. With three children and a German Shepherd, they've created a life many dream of, but getting to this point wasn't easy. Davon lost his mother 35 years ago and when she died, FDNY EMTs responded to the scene and it inspired him to become one. WPIX-TV CW 11 NEW YORK CITY North Tahoe Fire Protection District reports increase in gas leaks caused by snowstorms in California The North Tahoe Fire Protection District reported an alarming increase in gas leaks, carbon monoxide (CO) related emergencies and other hazard-related emergencies resulting from the repeated storms and heavy snow. Since January 1, hazard calls have accounted for nearly 20% of non-EMS incidents. North Tahoe Firefighters are responding to a significant increase in carbon monoxide emergencies throughout the region and authorities say many of these incidents are the result of heavy snow build-up on combustion-appliance venting, buried foundation vents and improper or snow-obstructed home generator ventilation systems. Gas leaks are also on the rise due to deeply buried propane tanks, above ground propane plumbing and buried natural gas meters impacted by the snow.
