Groves firefighters excited about grand opening of brand-new, state-of-the-art fire station VIDEO: There is growth coming to the Golden Triangle, and firefighters in Groves can't wait for community members to see the improvements. Fire crews with the Groves Fire Department are excited about the Saturday, March 26 grand opening of a brand-new, state-of-the-art fire station. Firefighters said they have waited for this desperately needed upgrade for years. The old Groves Fire Department was built in 1957. While the building served the community well, major renovations were needed to modernize the building. In 2018, the City of Groves approved the money needed to pay for a new and improved facility. Construction took 14 months, and now, first responders have a new building with safer working conditions. Fire crews said they could not be more excited about the move. "Our firefighters are a lot safer in this building," Groves Fire Department Chief Lance Billeaud said. KBMT-TV ABC/NBC 12 BEAUMONT The City of Corpus Christi approves new fire engine purchase Mayor Paulette Guajardo and the Corpus Christi City Council approved purchase for one replacement fire engine for the Corpus Christi Fire Department at Tuesday's regularly-scheduled meeting. The new engine, which is currently housed at the CCFD's new Fire Department Resource Center on Ayers Street, will replace a 2009 model. "Our Corpus Christi Fire Department will have the equipment they need," Guajardo said. The fire engine includes: compressed air-foam system, front and side air bags, side-roll protection, 1250 GPM water pumper, 500-gallon fuel tank and is equipped for both fire and EMS calls. The new engine, which cost $873,727, will be paid for out of the 2022 general fund. "As fire departments throughout Texas rush to contain wildfires, trust that the Corpus Christi City Council will provide our firefighters with the very best tools to keep residents and firefighters safe," Guajardo said. KZTV CBS 10 CORPUS CHRISTI Skellytown: Inflation impacts on volunteer fire departments With the average gas price in our area at 3.60 a gallon, drivers are feeling the pain at the pump, but imagine how much it costs to fill up something as big as a fire truck. Soaring gas prices really take a toll on volunteer fire departments. How can these departments afford to do their jobs during hard times? Many of the folks who protect our communities from fires in the panhandle are strictly volunteer. These departments depend on donations, which can potentially become an issue, especially when economic times are tough. "That's definitely a conversation piece that I think, generally speaking, no one wants to have. If the costs continue to rise, there's nothing to stabilize and there's no new avenues for additional funding to help kind of make it through that pinch," says Jacob Clifton, the Skellytown Volunteer Fire Department chief. KVII-TV ABC/CW+ 7 AMARILLO Amarillo Fire reports another fire at old hospital building Officials with the Amarillo Fire Department released information on an early Thursday morning structure fire at the old BSA building at 200 NW Seventh Ave. According to a news release, officials with the department were dispatched to a fire at the site around 2:52 a.m. Thursday. When crews arrived at the old BSA building around 2:57 a.m., crews found light smoke coming from a chimney on the roof of the building. This comes after officials from the department warned the public of homeless and transients causing fires in abandoned buildings. In December 2021, officials said one of the abandoned buildings that have caused the fire department problems is the old BSA hospital, according to previous reports by MyHighPlains.com KAMR-TV NBC 4 AMARILLO Austin first responders now eligible for paid family leave City leaders announced Wednesday that sworn police, fire and EMS employees will have access to six weeks of paid leave. No existing benefits will change — such as shares leave, short or long-term disability, or the accommodation process protected under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The move follows an Austin City Council resolution from last December that tasked the City's human resources department with developing options to provide family leave for first responders. "It demonstrates our continued appreciation for the hard work of our sworn police, fire and EMS colleagues," said Austin City Manager Spencer Cronk. The move will have a price tag of about $1.7 million per year, according to figures from the City. Leader of Austin's public safety unions issued a joint statement on the action. KVUE-TV ABC 24 AUSTIN Cushing Volunteer Fire Department receives relief donations The Cushing Volunteer Fire Department was an active site for donation material gathering on Wednesday. County officials and volunteer firefighters were receiving pre-arranged donations, including oriented strand boards for people to patch houses. Truckloads of water and tarps were also brought in, all with input from the Red Cross who will be opening a small office of operations in the Commercial Bank of Texas building. Nacogdoches County Judge Greg Sowell was overseeing the donation collection and said the disaster response began the second the wind stopped blowing, but that there is quite a lot of damage to offset. "The damage to just the electrical infrastructure is tremendous," said Sowell. "I believe Oncor told me they have near 100 utility poles down." KTRE-TV ABC 9 LUFKIN PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

Two Firefighters Injured Battling Separate 2-Alarm Fires In Maryland VIDEO: Two of Baltimore's firefighters were injured as they battled separate two-alarm fires on Wednesday, the local firefighters union said. The first fire started in Northwest Baltimore and emitted heavy smoke. Firefighters had to close off part of Reisterstown Road as they battled the blaze. The union said shortly before 5 p.m. firefighters responded to the scene at the 5200 block of Reisterstown Road in the Woodmere neighborhood. They found fire showing from multiple two-story row homes. Fire officials say that one house was vacant and two were occupied. One of the firefighters suffered "minor injuries," Baltimore Fire Chief Roman Clark said. "It was pretty intense," one man said. "I mean, it was a lot of smoke and it was heavy and it covered the sky, really, especially during the beginning." WJZ-TV CBS 13 BALTIMORE New technology to increase safety for Pennsylvania first responders The Move Over Law in Pennsylvania is meant to protect police, fire, and workers from being injured, and it's important for drivers to be aware. All the Scranton Fire Department's vehicles now have an added layer of protection, with the addition of new technology. "Anything that we could do to alert drivers out on the highway that we're operating on a scene. Typically, our focus is on the safety and the treatment of the patients that may be involved in an accident," said Scranton Fire Chief John Judge. The HAAS Safety Cloud system is a collision-prevention service that connects emergency lights and sirens with navigation apps, like Waze. Drivers using compatible apps will receive a notification when approaching an emergency. "They'll get some early notification, and it will actually hopefully have them slowing down." The system is also beneficial to other fire trucks that are going to cross the same route headed to an emergency. It will send a notification to prevent a possible collision. WNEP-TV ABC 16 SCRANTON ‘Fire in the hole': How the Las Vegas bomb squad works PHOTOS: Four milk jugs filled with gasoline were wrapped in detonation cord outside a Las Vegas Fire Department training center on Wednesday. Bomb Squad technician Mark Duncan yelled "fire in the hole!" three times. A loud bang sent a fireball about 10 feet into the air of the eastern valley and a large plume of black smoke even higher into the clear desert sky. Duncan said the explosive weight of the blast, part of a media demonstration, was the equivalent 0.11 pounds of TNT. Cmdr. Shon Saucedo said team members wear two hats. The unit investigates arsons within Las Vegas city limits, but also serves as the bomb squad for all of Southern Nevada. "We're the law enforcement wing of Las Vegas Fire Rescue," Saucedo said. The squad has two bomb response trucks. From inside, team members can remotely control robots and conduct X-rays of possible explosive packages, Capt. Jamie Sypniewicz said. The screens in the truck displayed an example of an X-ray of a pipe bomb in a bag. LAS VEGAS REVIEW JOURNAL - METERED SITE Firefighter in Oklahoma becomes his department's first smoke diver Broken Arrow is celebrating one of its firefighters. He's become the department's first Smoke Diver. The Oklahoma Smoke Diver Association is one of only three Smoke Diver programs in the United States. Oklahoma's program is in its second year and now 11 more firefighters have the designation including Broken Arrow's own Wade Ambrose. Becoming a certified Smoke Diver is all about rigorous training and teaching firefighters to push past their breaking point to become better at their jobs. "Bad stuff usually happens later on in the fire. It's not when everybody is fresh. It's usually when people are tired and start making bad decision. [The program is] designed to make people better at critical thinking and performing under high stress when they are physically taxed," Wade Ambrose said. KJRH-TV NBC 2 TULSA 'A real sky-lighter': Remembering the Paaske Furniture fire in Iowa On Wednesday, March 30, 1977 one of the largest disasters to hit Lyons occurred when a massive fire completely destroyed the historic four-story Paaske Furniture building at 65 Main Ave. The strong winds spread the fire onto the adjoining Potts Jewelry Store at 71 Main Ave. That historic building also was destroyed. Assistant Fire Chief Cliff Peters told the Clinton Herald the next day that he had never seen a fire like that before. "The heat was terrible, the wind was terrible, and we didn't have enough men, hoses, or anything." Peters had no official estimate of damage but thought it could be millions of dollars. Peters said the fire started on the top floor. The wind was from the south. "We had so much heat that windows were exploding across the street." Clinton weather records show the sustained wind speed that day was 35 mph, with wind gusts up to 55 mph. CLINTON HERALD PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
