El Paso's fire chief takes on new position among other leaders at City Hall Some leadership roles have shifted within the City of El Paso. The Senior Deputy City Manager for the City of El Paso, Colonel (Ret) Cary Westin, will be retiring. The announcement was made at Tuesday's city council meeting. Westin joined the City of El Paso in 2014 and currently overlooks the city's economic development and tourism departments. "Cary has been by far one of the most influential people in my career," said City Manager Tommy Gonzalez. "It's been an honor to work alongside him. I have challenged him to do more than is imaginable and certainly what at times has to have been uncomfortable, but Cary always, always took the guidance, and came back with results each time." Gonzalez said he convinced Westin to still work with the City of El Paso on a limited basis. Westin said he plans to stay in El Paso. KFOX-TV FOX 14 EL PASO I-10 west in El Paso reopens following semi-truck fire VIDEO/PHOTOS: Interstate 10 west near Thorn Avenue in El Paso has reopened after it was closed because of a semi-truck that caught on fire. Multiple El Paso Fire Department and law enforcement units blocked off the highway because of the fire, TxDOT cameras showed Wednesday around 8 p.m. Fire crews were checking for hotspots, according to an El Paso Fire Department spokesperson. Photo from a viewer shows a Mesilla Valley Transportation truck on fire. Video from a viewer shows the driver getting out of the truck while it is on fire. No injuries were reported, the spokesperson said. The call for the fire was made at 7:42 p.m. KFOX-TV FOX 14 EL PASO Grant will fund second fire station in Liberty The City of Liberty has been awarded a $5 million grant from the Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs that will be used to build a second fire station on the 100 block of Bowie Street. The site is located on the south side of US 90 behind Auto Zone and O'Reilly's Auto Parts. Construction of the fire station is projected to cost roughly $6 million. The City of Liberty has set aside $1 million in its budget for fire station renovations and improvements that can be used for the new fire station, said City Manager Tom Warner. The second fire station is crucial for the safety of citizens and businesses as it provides a fire station on the south side of the Union Pacific Railroad tracks. At the present time, in the event that a train is stalled or delayed due to an accident, firefighters potentially could be delayed from reaching another emergency on the south side of the tracks. BLUEBONNET NEWS Midland County fire crews respond to chemical fire; one person injured Midland County Emergency Management and the Fire Marshal's Office responded to a chemical fire on East Highway 80, near Impact Chemical Technologies on Wednesday, according to a county spokesperson. KWES-TV NBC 9 ODESSA Tom Green County: Lower Colorado River Authority awards $50,000 grant to Water Valley Volunteer Fire Department The Water Valley Volunteer Fire Department will be able to purchase a new 4,000-gallon water tanker truck, thanks to a $50,000 grant from the Lower Colorado River Authority. The Community Development Partnership Program grant, along with approximately $287,000 in matching funds from the department, will allow the VFD to transport more water to fires. This is especially important for the Water Valley VFD because its service area does not have fire hydrants. The department has utilized all it can out of its current 3,400-gallon water tanker truck, Tom Sexton, Water Valley VFD president said in a press release from the LRCA. "The one we have is just worn out – it was tired when we got it used 12 years ago, and has been limping along," Sexton said. KIDY-TV FOX 6 SAN ANGELO Home owned by Habitat for Humanity set to be demolished, used for training by Bryan Fire Department Hands-on experience is important at any job. BCS Habitat for Humanity was set to demolish one of their old properties when their director of property acquisition, development, and maintenance Nathan Touchette had an idea. "Before we demolished the structure I reached out and got with Bryan Fire Department to see if they would be interested in using it for training and it turns out it was perfect," said Touchette. "They don't get the opportunity to train in houses like this so giving them a different atmosphere and different environment helps their guys get a different picture they don't normally get." During the training, Bryan Fire Department was able to work on new techniques and practice new communication skills that they will be able to use in a real disaster situation. Florida's Surfside Condo Collapse Victims to Share Over $1B in Recovery Funds VIDEO: The pool of funds intended to compensate victims of the collapse of the Champlain Towers South condominium will increase to more than $1 billion, attorneys Wednesday told the judge overseeing the resulting class action lawsuit. Attorneys for the victims said all but one of the remaining defendants have settled the claims against them, and that company is expected to settle soon. That increases the total recovery pool to $997 million, said Harley Tropin, one of the lead plaintiffs attorneys. That number doesn't include the minimum $120 million guaranteed opening bid in an auction of the oceanfront lot, now set for May 24. Those who lost property will split $83 million of that, based on the size of their units. The rest of the funds, less some expenses, will go to the families of the 98 people who died in the June 24, 2021 collapse in Surfside. WTVJ-TV NBC 6 MIAMI Reckless driving in Wisconsin: Milwaukee emergency responders face epidemic daily Reckless driving in Milwaukee is an epidemic. Emergency responders are getting hurt – and the wounds are more than physical. "People are screaming and crying and yelling at you to move faster, things like that," said Milwaukee Fire Captain A.J. Hornik. A group of Milwaukee firefighters recently trained for what has become a serious problem in the city. "Just based on the run volume, the amount of times we have to use what we train for to remove people from vehicles, it definitely feels to me, we're using a lot of resources for sure to deal with it," Hornik said. Dealing with what exactly? Reckless driving. The MFD captain is the first to respond to those scenes. "I'm kind of a step back and oversee," Hornik said. As Hornik's team stays mission focused, they are hit with reality. Reckless driving is out of control. WITI-TV FOX 6 MILWAUKEE Architecture firm designs fire station to train elite FDNY firefighters Studio Gang has completed a fire station for Brooklyn's elite force that doubles as a simulation and training facility for extreme rescue situations. The new headquarters for the FDNY's Rescue 2 unit is located in Brownsville, Brooklyn. Each of New York's five boroughs has a dedicated Rescue team. These teams are highly specialized in extreme conditions that include rappelling down buildings, navigating collapsed structures, and even deploying for underwater rescue operations. The building serves as the elite unit's headquarters, where the firefighters sleep, train, and coordinate their operations. "The rescue company is trained to respond to various emergency scenarios, from fire and building collapses to water rescues and scuba operations," said US firm Studio Gang. "The new Rescue Company 2 facility is designed as a tool for training, enabling FDNY's elite force of specialized rescue workers to stage and simulate a wide range of emergency conditions in, on, and around the building," the studio added. DEZEEN Massachusetts city lost its church to fire 40 years ago; The day changed the neighborhood forever PHOTO GALLERY: On Pleasant Street, flaming chunks of wood were flying through the air. David Jennings stood on the corner of Pleasant and Eastern Avenue, looking west at the Flint as it was being consumed by an inferno. "The smoke and the flames … it blotted out the sun," Jennings said. "Flames over 100 feet in the air." On May 11, 1982, Jennings was a lieutenant in the Fall River Fire Department, fighting the blaze that destroyed the Flint's Notre Dame de Lourdes Church and most of a block of tenements. It threatened to spread further along Pleasant Street and destroy everything in its path. Jennings and his crew, and mutual aid from as far away as Boston, worked desperately to control a fire that simply would not be controlled. He heard Fire Chief Louis Shea had called in experts in explosive ordnance. "They were going to start blowing up buildings on the south side of Pleasant Street to create a firebreak," Jennings said.
