Man killed in Smith County house fire; firefighter hit by power line taken to hospital A house fire broke out around 8 p.m. on Wednesday, taking the life of one person. Noonday, Red Springs, Dixie and Chapel Hill fire responded to the scene, and arrived to find a very heavy fire, Smith County Fire Marshal Jay Brooks said. A man with special needs who lived in the home has died at the scene, Justice of the Peace Pct. 2 Andy Dunklin confirmed. Brooks later said that the man, who was 33 years old, was pulled out of the house, but was unable to be resuscitated. A firefighter was shocked by a power line falling off the house, and was taken to a hospital. Brooks said that he is in good shape, but is being checked out as a precaution. The firefighter was an ESD 2 career firefighter, either with Noonday or Flint fire department, Brooks said. Brooks said that the children and everyone else from inside the house are safe. KLTV ABC 7 TYLER Five years after San Antonio firefighter Scott Deem's death, suspected arsonist remains jailed VIDEO: Five years after a raging shopping-center blaze killed firefighter Scott Deem, the business owner suspected of igniting the flames is still behind bars and awaiting his day in court. That trial date for Emond Johnson, now 43, is currently set for Sept. 12. He is charged with murder and arson in connection with the May 18, 2017 fire along Ingram Road that ripped through multiple businesses, propelled by strong winds and other less-than-ideal conditions. His bonds total more than $1.2 million. Two fellow firefighters were also injured while battling the flames, which started at The Spartan Box gym and which Johnson owned at the time. Deem, officials later said, was unable to escape the burning building. He was 31 when he died, and continues to be remembered by his wife and children. KENS-TV CBS 5 SAN ANTONIO New Braunfels Fire Station No. 3 gets an upgrade New Braunfels firefighters assigned to Fire Station No. 3 are enjoying new digs after city leaders and stakeholders on Wednesday officially opened a new fire station on Hanz Drive to serve the city's northeast side. The ceremony opening the $6.7 million station — the city's busiest with the "Kings of Gruene" responding to 2,653 calls last year — began with posting the colors by the department's honor guard and performance of the traditional Irish tune "The Minstrel Boy" by the New Braunfels Firefighters Fifes and Drums. City Manager Robert Camareno said many years of planning went into delivering the finished project that will serve the city for years to come. Voters approved the station's replacement as part of the 2019 bond program. NEW BRAUNFELS HERALD-ZEITUNG Large fire closes popular south-San Antonio taqueria Throughout the morning Wednesday, hungry customers pulled into the parking lot at the Taqueria El Tapatio de Jalisco on Roosevelt, only to find disappointment. The regulars who have been coming to the small family cafe near Loop 410 in south San Antonio said they return time after time for great food at reasonable prices. But that was all threatened just after 3 a.m. when the San Antonio Fire Department was called to fight a stubborn kitchen fire, complicated by a gas leak from a couple of large propane tanks. The first arriving companies reported they had lots of fire coming from the side and back of the building. They also said the structure was heavily fortified with burglar bars, so gaining entry to fight the fire was a challenge. Once inside, there was a report of a hissing sound coming from a leaking tank, so firefighters retreated, neutralized the propane tanks and continued fighting the fire. KENS-TV CBS 5 SAN ANTONIO Texarkana, TX and Texarkana, AR first responders honored for EMS Appreciation Week It was a special day in the ArkLaTex for the men and women who protect and serve when emergencies arise. The twin cities of Texarkana, Ark., and Texarkana, Texas, made a joint proclamation declaring May 18 as EMS Appreciation Day. "When 911 is dialed and there is an emergency and everybody is running away, they are running toward the danger and that's why we appreciate them," said Dr. Matt Young, first responder. Young teamed with businesses to honor Texarkana first responders with a free meal as part of National Emergency Medical Service Week. "We want them to know, and their families to know, how much we respect them and they are putting their life on the line every time they respond," Young said. Organizers for the event said around 275 meals were served to police officers, fire fighters and paramedics. HAWAII NEWS NOW Seconds to Save Lives: Ohio region's first mobile stroke unit sees success A rare ambulance in Hamilton County is changing the game for the fifth leading cause of death in Ohio. In 2020, the CDC says more than 7,000 people died from strokes in the state. That same year, the region rolled out its first mobile stroke unit. "We have great stroke centers throughout the entire city, but just the logistics of transporting a patient from their home to the hospital -- that takes time when literally minutes matter. We're able to really see that reflected in the data that we're seeing in terms of the time to medication that we're seeing," said Dr. Chrisopher Richards, medical director of UC Health Mobile Stroke Unit. When every second counts, UC Health's Mobile Stroke Unit is on the move, at your doorstep in minutes, bringing the emergency department curbside and giving immediate care to stroke patients. WKRC-TV CBS 12 CINCINNATI Illinois town's highest-ranking female fire official: A preparedness expert She may not know you personally, but Evanston Division Fire Chief Kimberly Kull says she thinks about your safety every day. Kull is the highest-ranking woman in the department, reporting directly to Fire Chief Paul Polep. She's responsible for emergency management and logistics within the department and is also the Public Information Officer, also called a PIO. It's Kull's job to help those who live and work in the city prepare for a variety of emergencies, both natural and otherwise. She also must ensure the department is ready to respond. But she's been training for this job her entire life. "Being a firefighter was something I wanted to do as a little girl, and emergency medicine has been a passion for as long as I can remember," Kull told the RoundTable. "I've been called to a life of service, and I believe each of us has a responsibility to serve one another in whichever way we've been called." EVANSTON ROUND TABLE Balloon artists create life-sized firetruck, firefighter at Wisconsin station A group of 12 balloon artists from around the United States gathered in Omro to create a life-sized fire truck out of balloons. Artists began working on the project on Monday, where they made the truck and other minor details. On Wednesday, the group unveiled the finished product inside the Omro Fire Department. "It uses about 5,000 balloons. We're using round balloons, long balloons, and all types of shapes. Mainly just to create our own way of an art form," said Head Twisticologist Robbie Furman. Inside the fire station, the community was able to see the giant fire truck, a firefighter holding an American flag, and a dog next to a fire hydrant. "It's a unique opportunity to do a big build like this. A lot of us don't do as many large builds so I've got 22 employees in the area that do balloons and this is a great opportunity for them to come out and learn a little," said Jake Eggert, Owner of Mischief & Magic in Green Bay. WFRV-TV CBS 5 GREEN BAY Indiana EMS using software to help in treating homeless population When EMS personnel are called out, they generally don't know much about the patient they're going to be treating. That is especially true for the city's homeless population. EMS officials say when they respond, they need as much information as possible about a patient's medical story. "Whether they were unable to speak, unresponsive, refused to give it," Indianapolis EMS Quality Assurance Officer Milon Berry said. "For whatever reason, now that story can be completed." Berry said a new software called "ESO" changed the game for first responders. The software they used before wasn't effective at storing data. However, ESO allows IEMS to quickly get a patient's medical history by documenting and saving that information on patient's who've been treated by them before.
