Timpson fire chief gets family, pets out before fire destroys his home VIDEO: On Sunday, the chief of the Timpson Volunteer Fire Department managed to save his wife, children, and pets from the fire that destroyed his home. Jesus Acosta, who was voted in as chief of the Timpson VFD back in March, said he was on standby at the fire station due to bad weather early Sunday morning. He got back to his home on State Highway 87 North at about 1:50 a.m. Sunday. Acosta said as soon as he entered the home, he saw a "black haze" on the ceiling, and he could see a glow coming from upstairs. At that point, Acosta rushed upstairs. He added that he saw the flames climb up the wall of the TV room. Acosta said his wife, son, and daughter were "sound asleep when the fire started." He woke everyone up and got them and their two dogs outside, adding that it was just in time. KLTV ABC 7 TYLER Child suffers burns, dog dies in Dallas house fire, officials say One child has been transported to a local hospital following a Dallas house fire, officials said. Dallas Fire-Rescue crews responded to a fire at a one-story home located in the 4200 block of Munger Avenue, near Haskell late Wednesday afternoon. A fire investigator at the scene said four people were inside the home -- one adult and three children. One child was transported to a local hospital for burn injuries and the family's dog died, the investigator said. The investigator told WFAA, the blaze didn't "look suspicious," but the investigation is ongoing. WFAA-TV ABC 8 DALLAS How San Antonio Fire Department jumped to action as gunfire rang out in Uvalde 80 miles away As gunfire jolted the small community of Uvalde around noon on Tuesday, the San Antonio Fire Department immediately sent blood, equipment and teams to the town that sits about 85 miles to the west. The fire chief there called SAFD Chief Charles Hood shortly after the shooting began, and his Alamo City counterpart raced to Robb Elementary to set up a unified command center. "It was a horrific scene," Hood said. "The most heartbreaking thing was seeing these parents sitting on the curb not having any information and I wanted to get them away from everyone else and to a safe place. We got them to an area where we could get several critical-stress people to manage them and get them to the reunification center." But many of those families would not be reunited with their children. The grieving in Uvalde extends beyond the families who lost children. First responders too are dealing with what they saw inside the school. KENS-TV CBS 5 SAN ANTONIO Be It Flood or Fire, Austin Is Preparing for Disasters to Come As you read this, half of Travis County is classified under high wildfire risk. Despite this Tuesday's much-needed storm, the county has been under a burn ban since May 11, the default mode that we reset to every couple of weeks. Whatever the current weather, local emergency managers and elected officials alike continue to hammer home the same sentiment: It's not if, but when, an out-of-control, California-sized wildfire could ravage Central Texas. But if we get enough rain to avert that possibility in the long term, much of the region – in fact, some of the same places with the greatest wildfire risk – could instead be ravaged by flooding. What does it all mean? Preparing for doomsday is a full-time job that requires all hands on deck. AUSTIN CHRONICLE Laredo Fire Department springs into action during severe thunderstorm It was a busy night for the Laredo Fire Department on Tuesday night as they helped render aid during the severe thunderstorm. According to fire officials, they helped, four stranded motorists, four electrical wires that were down and one electrical transformer fire. Fortunately, no critical injuries were reported as a result of the storm. Fire officials would like to remind residents to stay away from flooded areas. If you see a large body of water on the street, turnaround don't drown. Also keep your pets indoors. In the event of large hail, stay in a down stars room toward the center of your house, away from any windows. KGNS-TV NBC/ABC 8 LAREDO PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

Tennessee school bus driver spots and reports house fire, incident captured on helmet cam VIDEO: A school bus driver running their routes Wednesday morning spotted a house fire and quickly called 911 about 6:00am. The house fire, in the 3900 block of Hooker Road, was in Walker County, but Chattanooga firefighters assisted in the task of extinguishing the fire and shared helmet cam video. The house was condemned and vacant, allowing firefighters to focus on controlling and ultimately extinguishing the fire in short order. The firefighters did not enter the house, since it was condemned, and did their work outside the structure. WRCB-TV NBC 3 CHATTANOOGA Cal Fire disavows any role in upcoming CBS drama ‘Fire Country' starring actor from Sonoma County Throughout the trailer for the upcoming CBS drama series, "Fire Country," the words Cal Fire are written on fire trucks, uniforms, shirts and paperwork. But Joe Tyler, director and 31-year veteran of the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire), wants Cal Fire staff to know that the department is not affiliated in any way with the television show. Tyler released a statement this week that was distributed department wide saying that Cal Fire, the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation and Cal Fire Local 2881, an affiliate of the International Association of Firefighters that represents over 7,000 current and retired Cal Fire employees, had no involvement with the series. Moreover, Tyler criticized the show's depiction of firefighters. He called me on the cell phone and told me that they were responding to Thurston High School," Dennis Murphy, who was the Springfield fire chief at the time, explained. "And I just dropped my jaw what they said they were responding to…and they said the report was multiple students down, an active shooter," Murphy said. KOIN-TV NBC 6 PORTLAND In reaching out to kids, Massachusetts fire chief's cable show wins national honor VIDEO: What started as a way to connect with kids during the pandemic has evolved into a national award-winning cable access show. "Storytime with Chief Cassidy," starring Fire Chief Michael Cassidy and produced by Holliston Cable Access and station manager Bruce Gilfoy, was recently honored with an "Award of Excellence," at the 28th Annual Communicator Awards, presented by the Academy of Interactive and Visual Arts. Other winners included The Walt Disney Company, Mattel, T-Mobile and NASA Television. "I think the product we've been putting out is really high quality," Cassidy said. Cassidy came up with the idea just over two years ago, at the beginning of the pandemic. Without being able to go to schools and interact with children, he sought a way to continue reaching out to them. He came up with the idea of reading a fire safety book, recording it and posting it on Facebook. METRO WEST DAILY NEWS - METERED SITE Rhode Island launches nation's first COVID test-to-treat site Gov. Dan McKee had a special guest at his COVID-19 briefing Thursday morning. White House COVID-19 Coordinator Dr. Ashish Jha joined McKee virtually to announce the nation's first federally backed test-to-treat site is opening at the Clínica Esparanza/Hope Clinic in Providence. The new site comes as the White House announced more steps Thursday to make the antiviral treatment Paxlovid more accessible across the United States. The site will provide patients with immediate access to the drug once they test positive. "I think it is an innovative idea that Dr. Jha and his team have looked at and Rhode Island is so fortunate to be leading the nation in this effort with vaccines and boosters also being available at these sites," McKee said. Anyone who tests positive at the clinic will immediately receive an assessment from a medical provider to see if they are eligible for oral antiviral treatment. If they are, they will receive the treatment onsite immediately. WPRI-TV CBS 12 PROVIDENCE PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
