Teen in ICU after being shocked by powerline in Montgomery County A 17-year-old remains in the Intensive Care Unit at a local hospital after he was shocked when he came in contact with powerlines in Montgomery County on Tuesday night. It happened at about 9:20 p.m. in the 17500 block of FM 1485 in New Caney. Authorities said the teen was attempting to set up a business banner that had been knocked down during the recent storms when a metal pole made contact with the powerlines. Authorities said the lines were carrying about 20,000 volts. Family members called 911 when the teen collapsed. When first responders arrived, the teen had no pulse. "Arrived within three minutes and found an individual in cardiac arrest," East Montgomery County Fire Department Captain Eran Denzler said. Firefighters said they were able to regain a pulse after working on him for about 20 minutes. Then, they took him to a hospital in Kingwood. KHOU-TV CBS 11 HOUSTON Laredo: Fire causes closure of Texas 359 A structure fire on Texas 359 and EG Ranch Road caused the complete closure of Texas 359 on Wednesday morning, according to Laredo police. No traffic was allowed to travel either east or west for about 1 1/2 hours. Laredo Fire Department responded to the reported structure fire in the 400 block of EG Ranch for a structure fire. Responding firefighters found a warehouse actively burning. A mini-bus and a tractor inside the warehouse were affected by the flames. Firefighters managed to extinguish flames without injury. Preliminary reports indicate that there was a recreational vehicle underneath the warehouse. This RV was the only vehicle that had electricity and was powering a refrigerator, according to the fire department. It is within this area that the heaviest fire damage was noted. First responders said it is likely the fire was electrical in nature. COMMUNITY IMPACT - RICHMOND Northeast Midland County Volunteer Fire Department receives equipment donation A donation of 1.1 million dollars from the Permian Strategic Partnership means the Permian Basin Road Safety Coalition can donate life-saving equipment for area first responders. Last January, the first responder life-saving initiative was a pilot program with hopes of serving first responders across West Texas. Now - fire, sheriff, and police departments in 22 counties will be recipients of new life-saving equipment. The jaws of life are just one piece of the equipment donation that the Northeast Midland County Volunteer Fire Department received Wednesday. "We've responded where we've needed extrication equipment, and we have some, but it's old and outdated. This new battery-powered easy to use handheld equipment is a lot faster to use. It's got more components to it than our normal tools do. It's a great addition," said Chief Jimmy Evans. KOSA-TV CBS 7 ODESSA Morgan's Point Resort: Donated radios replaced outdated gear at several area fire departments Several area fire departments are replacing outdated communications gear with radios donated by a larger city that insisted on anonymity. The Morgan's Point Resort Fire Department received nearly 50 of the donated radios and others went to other area departments including Central Bell and Beverly Hills. Morgan's Point firefighters had been using old and outdated radios that were mismatched and presented communication challenges that were a particular problem during the historic freeze in February, Fire Chief Taran Vaszocz said Wednesday. "Some of our other partners in public safety like our utilities and maintenance folks...folks from city hall, we weren't able to reach them as quickly as we would have liked to, " Vaszocz said. The donated radios were distributed not only to the community's firefighters, but also to city utility works, maintenance workers and city hall staff. KWTX-TV CBS 10 WACO Austin Fire Department releases 2021 Winter Weather Report On Wednesday, the Austin Fire Department's 2021 Winter Weather Report was released. It detailed the heroic efforts and long hours sacrificed by firefighters during February's winter storm. Division Chief Thayer Smith was working as a shift manager during the storm. He says on top of long hours, firefighters stepped up to do things outside of their normal responsibilities. They helped transfer nursing home patients, hand out water and rescue people trapped in cars. "They had to make do with what they had, a lot of times they didn't have the same amount of help like at house fires," says Smith. Smith says some of the fire stations themselves were without electricity—and many firefighters were unable to tend to their own families. He says AFD has also learned some valuable lessons for next time. Now the department is looking at getting more tire chains, making sure each station is equipped with water, generators and reevaluating crew rotations. KEYE-TV CBS 42 AUSTIN PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

Off-duty New York firefighter uses jet ski to help extinguish boat fire VIDEO: An off-duty Rochester firefighter came to the rescue during a recent boat fire – using an unconventional means to help extinguish it. Rochester firefighters' union IAFF107 says firefighter Oscar Herrera stepped in to help fight the fire on May 20 at Mayer's Marina on Irondequoit Bay. Video captured him using his jet ski to help get the fire under control. "I saw it. Naturally I wanted to see what was going on so I went over and there were a couple of other jet skis basically staring at it and I thought, 'What can I do to help?' And I'd seen it on YouTube a couple of times so I wanted to try it myself," Herrera said. Herrera says he did some maneuvers to create a big wake to throw water on the flames. It was a first for him, but because it worked so well, it may not be his last mission. Herrera works at Engine 10 at Dewey and Ridgeway avenues. WHAM-TV ABC/CW 13 ROCHESTER One airport in Georgia with seven 911 jurisdictions; Here's why it matters Anyone having a heart attack at the nation's busiest airport should be prepared to wait. Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport's average response time in 2020, from the 911 center receiving a medical call to the first unit reporting on scene, was 11 minutes and 48 seconds. Even if a 911 operator at the airport knows CPR or has previous medical training, they are prohibited from giving life-saving instructions to 911 callers. "They're not trained to provide CPR instructions over the phone," Airport 911 Director Augustus Hudson said. Neighboring 911 centers and major airports across the nation, Like DFW in Dallas, have access to emergency medical dispatchers and provide pre-arrival instructions over the phone during medical calls. The Atlanta airport's 911 center does not. WXIA-TV NBC 11 ATLANTA 48 people displaced, 5 buildings damaged in 7-alarm Massachusetts fire Dozens of people are displaced and five buildings were damaged Wednesday when a seven-alarm fire spread through a Dorchester neighborhood. The fire was reported at about 11:15 a.m. on Fayston Street. From Sky 5, heavy, black smoke could be seen coming from at least three triple-deckers -- Nos. 86, 84 and 82 Fayston -- at the corner with Mascoma Street. The fire also caused minor damage to structures on Mascoma and Quincy streets. "I woke up to people saying, ‘Fire, fire fire,' and I looked out the back and there was this big flame of fire coming up to the second floor and I just ran out," one resident said. Commissioner Jack Dempsey said the heat was an issue battling the fire, and three firefighters and one civilian were taken to the hospital for evaluation. WCVB-TV ABC 5 BOSTON Florida fifth grader 'treats' firefighters VIDEO: Eleven-year-old year old Brady Young thrives on structure. From Cub Scout to Boy Scout, Brady said the principles he's learned have helped shape him. Always be, "trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, irreverent," recalls Brady who made sure to add, "I feel like I'm all of those. I do a pretty good job at that." But one other rule he lives by is what has his Port St. Lucie community talking. "Treat others as you want to be treated," said Brady. He took those words to heart at a young age, participating in various scout events, school initiatives, and backpack food drives for hungry students. Even his principal at Morningside Elementary, Kathleen Melrose, has taken notice and says she's not really surprised anymore. WPTV NBC 5 WEST PALM BEACH Hearts for Heroes program saves Michigan firefighter's life Members of the Farmington Hills police and fire departments, along with officers from the Farmington Public Safety Department, received cardiac health screening tests as part of the Hearts for Heroes program back in December. Created by Dr. Justin Trivax and Dr. Herman Kado, Farmington Hills interventional cardiologists, the Hearts for Heroes program grew from an idea that originated with Trivax's high school daughters, Tessa and Sienna. The girls learned about a local police officer who suffered a fatal heart attack while on duty, and they asked their dad to help. The duo created the Hearts for Heroes program and reached out to several local police and fire departments. A total of 57 police officers and firefighters received coronary artery calcium scoring tests. C & G NEWSPAPERS PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
