New Odessa fire station hopes to increase response time in community VIDEO: A new fire station has been built in Odessa on Penbrook Street. Being on Penbrook Street allows Odessa Fire Station 6 to get access to more locations at the same pace they did at their old location. "The area that this is going to cover is really going to give us better access to 42nd Street. We are moved a little but more north than we wanted too, but again it gives us that access to 42nd, and that gives us access to either East or West 42nd and access to Grandview," said Fire Chief John Alvarez. Currently, 18 employees and a battalion chief are employed at the fire station. While it only opened Tuesday, crews are already operating out of the station. "Usually our time frame, our benchmark for responses is usually about five minutes and 20 seconds. And I think this station and where it is located will help us do that in other areas of the community," said Alvarez. KWES-TV NBC 9 ODESSA Fort Worth Fire Department replacing older trucks, buying new firefighter gear The Fort Worth Fire Department is replacing 11 fire trucks and will add personal protective equipment to supplement a gear exchange program. The City Council recently approved spending $14 million with Siddons Martin Emergency Group to buy new trucks that will replace aging apparatus. Once the order is placed, the new trucks will be delivered in a little more than two years. The department will also spend approximately $5.4 million over the next four years to buy gear and extractors used to clean the gear. The contract is with Ohio-based Lion First Responder PPE and Alabama-based North America Fire Equipment Co. Firefighters borrow gear from the exchange program when their personal set is being cleaned. The new trucks will replace older trucks that have reached their service life. CITY OF FORT WORTH Dramatic rescue of Tyler County deer hunter stuck upside down in tree 18 feet up: 'They saved my life' The Tyler County Sheriff's Office worked with other first responders to rescue a deer hunter who was stuck upside down, 18 feet up in a climbing tree stand. "They saved my life," said the hunter, who asked KFDM/Fox 4 to withhold his name. Sheriff Bryan Weatherford tells KFDM/Fox 4 the hunter was rescued Monday afternoon in the Spurger area. Deputy Cory LeBlanc with the Tyler County Sheriff's Office tells KFDM/Fox 4 the hunter called 911 at about 4:25 p.m. Monday, saying he needed help getting down after falling out of his deer climb and becoming stuck upside down, 18 feet up in the climbing tree stand. "He was trying to reach his hunting partner but couldn't," said Deputy LeBlanc. "He was able to call 911 and we made contact with him. His friend helped us reach the exact location. We had the Spurger Volunteer Fire Department, DPS, Texas Parks and Wildlife on the way, all trying to help." KFDM-TV CBS/CW+/FOX 6 BEAUMONT Smoke detector requests increase to new highs, Corpus Christi Fire Department says The Corpus Christi Fire Department has more people than usual requesting a free smoke detector this year, but there are not enough to go around. CCFD Fire Marshal Randy Paige said you need to qualify to get one and that older homes are the ones that need them most. Homes did not always require smoke detectors when they were built, but that rule changed in 1993. "This year, we've gotten over 200 calls on them," Paige said. "So, we have a long waiting list." Those calls are up from previous years, usually about 50-75 when CCFD announces they are giving out free smoke detectors. Only homes built before 1993 are eligible to have the fire department install them in their home. "We're trying to get those homes that are older built, that just have no smoke detection at all and get something, smoke detectors into their homes," Paige said. KIII-TV ABC 3 CORPUS CHRISTI Lubbock firefighters donate one thousand coats to kids ahead of winter season VIDEO: Around 300 kids at Nat Williams Elementary School will be staying warm and cozy this winter season, all thanks to the Lubbock Professional Firefighters Association. For ten years, local firefighters have donated brand new coats of all colors and sizes to two local schools that are lower income. This year, the two schools chosen were Williams and Carmona-Harrison Elementary. It's all part of "Operation Warm" which is a national non-profit that gives winter coats to kids that need them most. President of LPFFA, Chris Kemp said it all started with late retired Lubbock firefighter, Jay Watson. Watson had a vision to keep kids warm during the winter. For the first years, firefighters actually paid out of pocket for the coats. "About eight years ago, I started hosting a charity golf tournament to raise money for the funds. So, it's grown and grown and grown," Kemp explained. KAMC-TV ABC 28 LUBBOCK Granbury hosting largest class ever at its Fire Academy The Granbury Volunteer Fire Department is currently hosting the largest rookie class in the history of its Fire Academy. Fifty rookie firefighters are nearing completion of the eight-week academy, which prepares beginners to take the Firefighter 1 and 2 certification tests. The newcomers are receiving hands-on training with hoses, ropes, ladders, and fire extinguishers. They are learning skills needed in rescues, forcible entry, extractions, and other emergency scenarios. In addition, they are also learning fire science and are directly observing fire behavior in the GVFD's flashover chamber. The rookies are from eight of Hood County's nine volunteer fire departments. A few are from departments outside of Hood County. In noting that this is the largest rookie class to ever attend the Fire Academy, GVFD Fire Chief Matt Hohon said that the value of training together is clear when the fire departments work together at fires or other emergencies. VIDEO: Man killed in septic truck fire on I-95 in Virginia Virginia State Police is continuing to investigate a deadly crash and septic tank fire that resulted in road closures for Interstate 95 in Richmond. At around noon on Wednesday, Nov. 2, state troopers were called to I-95 near the Belvidere Street overpass for a reported vehicle fire. When units arrived, they found a 2007 Sterling Silver LT8500 septic truck fully engulfed in flames. Police said the driver of the septic truck — now identified as 36-year-old Brent Szarzynski of Chesterfield — died at the scene. An investigation revealed that a 2020 Cascadia Freightliner had been driving on I-95 with a load of I-beams that, according to police, were over-height. The I-beams reportedly struck the Belvidere Road overpass at high speed before striking the septic truck. WRIC-TV ABC 8 PETERSBURG Hawaii first responders using high-tech mobile lab that identifies fentanyl on the spot - and it fits in the palm of your hand VIDEO: Some of Hawaii's first responders are now using a high-tech tool to protect themselves from fentanyl exposure on the job. It's a mobile laboratory that can identify a variety of different drugs and results are available in seconds. It's called a TruNarc portable spectrometer and it allows first responders to know what kind of drug they're dealing with without ever having to touch it. That's especially valuable given how widespread fentanyl has become. "According to the manufacturer, you can do it through a zip lock bag," said Gary Yabuta. Yabuta, the head of Hawaii's High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area, says the portable spectrometer has become a tool first responders are constantly turning to. "Not only for overdose deaths," he said. "But law enforcement use it when they recover suspected illicit drugs from a crime scene. It's simple. Easy to carry." HAWAII NEWS NOW California fire district says pilot program resulted in cost savings, fewer 911 calls It's been a year since the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District added advanced medical providers to its list of first responders. It's a sign of the times nationwide. Scott Perryman is a battalion chief with Metro Fire. "I started in Southern California as paramedic," he said. Perryman loved medicine so much, he put himself through physician assistant school at Stanford. When he went back out into the field, he realized "that there were a lot of issues I was seeing as a paramedic that could be treated in the field and they didn't have to go to the emergency room." A lot of 9-1-1 calls were for something as simple as medication, so he decided to pilot a program in Sacramento where physician assistants or nurse practitioners accompany the paramedic. "The beauty of that is it saves the patient from going into the emergency room and spending resources there," Perryman said. KOVR-TV CBS 13 SACRAMENTO Firefighters on Florida's west coast grow mustaches to benefit firefighters impacted by Hurricane Ian The Firefighters Charities of Pasco has kicked off a no-shave November fundraiser to benefit firefighters impacted by Hurricane Ian. Normally during November, Pasco County firefighters grow their mustaches to raise money for firefighters impacted by cancer. The mission is different this year as firefighters will raise funds for fellow firefighters impacted by Hurricane Ian. Firefighters will keep their mustaches until November 19th when an event called "Movember Shave Off" will take place at Double Branch Brewery in Wesley Chapel. According to Captain JJ Martinez, Vice President of Pasco County Professional Firefighters Local 4420, firefighters are unable to grow their beards due to respiratory masks and personal protective equipment used in hazardous environments. One firefighter who will receive help from the fundraiser is Cody Janski. WFLA-TV NBC 8 TAMPA PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
