Woman in custody after gasoline-soaked rags found at scene of San Antonio fire, officials say Officials are searching for a possible arsonist after an east-side home went up in flames overnight. It happened on South Gevers Street at Aransas Avenue around 9:40 p.m. Wednesday. Officials say a woman was taken into custody and some gasoline-soaked rags were found at the home, which is on a block with other newly built homes. The batallion chief says he was leaving the firehouse garage when he noticed flames from a distance and immediately called for help. About 16 units responded to battle the blaze. When firefighters got to the scene, they found heavy flames and smoke coming from the two story home, which was newly built. Crews used a ladder truck to spray the large flames, which took about 25 minutes to get under control. KENS-TV CBS 5 SAN ANTONIO Update: Hughes Spring residents, firefighters continue to rebuild after tornado's devastation VIDEO: The Hughes Spring community continues to recover after a tornado ripped through the city two weeks ago. "Where I'm standing was probably twenty foot tall from debris you couldn't see my house from the street," says Hughes Springs resident, Gene Dodson. While residents are still cleaning up the mess left behind, the fire station is also in the process of rebuilding. The fire station was destroyed by the tornado. "The cleaning up is going real well with outside help. The city's cleaning everything up they moved us over here," said Jay Cates, fire chief for Hughes Springs. The fire station is temporarily housed next door to the damaged fire station in what used to be the ambulance station. The fire station is currently operating with three vehicles whereas normally they have five. KLTV ABC 7 TYLER Texarkana Fire Department gets treadmill donation from Academy Sports & Outdoors Firefighters with the Texarkana, Texas, Fire Department received a donation from Academy Sports and Outdoors on Wednesday, Nov. 16. The business donated $1,000 worth of fitness equipment to the department. Academy officials said they wanted to thank the first responders who will spend Thanksgiving Day on duty instead of with their families. "We wanted to say thank you for them working this holiday season. We know they serve the community we are in and we just wanted to say thank you," said Ashley Razo with Academy. Fire Chief Chris Black said the donation should help keep firefighters in good physical condition. "The donation of this treadmill really helps our guys keep their fitness in shape so we can do our job even better for our community." KSLA-TV CBS 12 SHREVEPORT Fundraiser planned to help Allen ‘Tiny' Gray, who spent 62 years as a first responder in Lubbock County Allen ‘Tiny' Gray started his public service career as a volunteer firefighter in Idalou at 17-years-old and spent the next 62 years as a first responder. Tiny even helped train and inspire future EMTs, including his friend of 42 years, Gary Vaughn. "When we got done with clinical rotations and I had to ride on the ambulance, Tiny was one of my preceptors. We just hit it off real well at the station, too, and him and his partner talked me into going on and becoming a paramedic," Vaughn said. Tiny even inspired his daughter, Staci Newton, to become an ER nurse. She says Tiny had the same kind of impact on many more people. "He has inspired generations of individuals to better themselves and better their education, from first responders, to medical personnel, to everyone he's come in contact with," Newton said. KJTV FOX 34 LUBBOCK Austin Fire Department extinguishes vacant house fire The Austin Fire Department responded to a vacant house fire in East Austin on Thursday. KEYE-TV CBS 42 AUSTIN Denison student earns trip to school in fire truck VIDEO: Not many kids get to hop out of a fire truck when they get dropped off for school. But that's exactly what Hyde Park Elementary student Sam Connor got to enjoy on Thursday morning. "Crazy cool, I had a lot of fun," he said. Sam was rolling in style because he was prepared. "They had to come up with an escape plan," Chief Kenneth Jacks said. "They had to draw a picture of their house and how they'd get out... like through the window, or through the front door, or through the back door." As if a whole crew of firefighters picking you up isn't cool enough, Sam was also treated to a sweet breakfast along the way. When the big red "bus" got to school, Sam had everyone looking his way. "I think they are jealous!" he said. It's a win for Sam, and a win for Denison Fire Rescue, because they know the work they do now will follow kids like Sam all their lives. VIDEO: Investigators working to determine cause of furniture factory fire in New York The Jamestown Fire and Police departments are looking into what caused the former Crawfords Furniture Factory to go up in flames on Wednesday. Jamestown Mayor Eddie Sundquist says the old building on Allen Street started on fire some time around 11:30 a.m. Jamestown Deputy Fire Chief Matthew Coon says the building went up in flames quickly and forced crews from multiple fire departments in Chautauqua County to help. He added it's one of the top 10, biggest fires that he's ever seen in his career. 2 On Your Side has also learned the building was being used for storage, so there was a lot to burn inside. "As things have unfolded, the building did collapse as a result of the fire. As the incident progressed along now, we're starting to scale back our operation a bit and trying to get in and mop up some hot spots and certainly have a plan to mitigate this as we work through the night and into tomorrow," Coon said. WGRZ-TV NBC 2 BUFFALO Related with Video: Burning structure crumbles during major fire Tulsa Fire Station 33 displays new public art piece VIDEO: A public art sculpture was placed at Tulsa's Fire Station 33 near 41st and 129th. The City of Tulsa Arts Commission chose artist Joe Norman and the National Sculptors' Guild for this $48,000 project. According to the National Sculptors' Guild, this sculpture is intended to "activate the site and signify the exemplary service of firefighters in a single, free-standing sculpture." According to the National Sculptors' Guild, the stainless steel sculpture, titled "Protect," is six feet tall, and the title written in red lettering is visible from one direction. From two other sides a gray silhouette of a firefighter is visible. And from the final side, opposite "Protect," is "an abstraction, symbolic of the unknowns that firefighters face." "The Arts Commission is very impressed with this artist," Commission Chair Pam Deatherage said. KOKI-TV FOX 23 TULSA Ram heavy-duty diesel pickups recalled for engine fire risk Stellantis is recalling nearly 250,000 heavy duty diesel Ram pickup trucks in the U.S. because transmission fluid can leak and cause engine fires. The recall covers certain 2020 to 2023 Ram 2500 and some 2020 through 2022 Ram 3500 trucks. All have 6.7-liter Cummins diesel engines and 68RFE transmissions. The company says heat and pressure can build up in the transmission, expelling fluid from the dipstick tube. If the fluid hits a hot engine part, that can touch of a fire. Stellantis, formerly Fiat Chrysler, is still developing a repair. In the meantime the company says owners can still drive the trucks but drivers should contact a dealer if they see a dashboard warning light. The company says it has 16 reports of fires and 48 complaints, field reports and warranty claims due to the problem. It's aware of one minor injury caused by the issue. ABC NEWS Chicago firefighters demonstrate how frying a turkey this Thanksgiving could go terribly wrong VIDEO: The Chicago Fire Department demonstrated how a delicious main course could turn Thanksgiving into tragedy. At the Quinn Fire Academy Wednesday morning, firefighters showed how quickly a deep-fried turkey can start a fire if not handled correctly. Every year, fires are started when home cooks overlook safety, fire officials say. Having too much oil in the fryer can cause big flames that can get out of control, burning down garages, porches and houses, and injuring people. "First, to test it out, you want to take your fryer and you want to fill it with water and then lower your turkey in to find out where you should mark it off so that it will be covered, but not overflow," Fire Commissioner Annette Nance-Holt said. "After that, you want to take your turkey out, you want to pour out the water and dry out the fryer and then add your oil as needed." WFLD-TV FOX 32 CHICAGO New FDA warning links cough medicine to rise in child poisonings Parents and medical providers are being called on to be careful with prescription cough medication as overdoses among children are on the rise. Calls to poison control centers in the United States reporting the ingestion of prescription cough medicine by children rose by 158% between 2010 and 2018, according to a study published Tuesday by the Food and Drug Administration. The study, published in the journal Pediatrics, found that pediatric poisonings involving the drug benzonatate, sold under the brand name Tessalon, have increased each year. Most cases of unintentional exposures involved children 5 and under, according to the study. Benzonatate is used as a cough relief for people ages 10 and older.
