Amarillo City Council establishes Fire Marshal's Office within Fire Department The Amarillo City Council released details on its agreement approved on Tuesday with the Amarillo Professional Fire Fighters Association, which will establish the Fire Marshal's Office as a part of the Amarillo Fire Department. According to the city, the agreement will mark a return of the Fire Marshal's Office to the Fire Department. In the past, the office has been both a stand-alone department as well as part of the AFD. "This agreement approved by the city council allows for the Fire Marshal's Office to again be a division of the Amarillo Fire Department," said COA Interim City Manager Andrew Freeman. "I would like to thank the APFFA executive board for their collaboration while working on this agreement that benefits both sides. It represents cooperation and cohesion between entities that are committed to public safety and to the welfare of the residents of Amarillo." WSVN-TV FOX 7 MIAMI Firefighting summit in Maryland explores modern problems, solutions Hundreds of firefighting leaders and experts from across the nation gathered at the National Emergency Training Center in Emmitsburg on Tuesday for the second annual U.S. Fire Administrator's Summit on Fire Prevention and Control. Thousands more tuned in virtually to discuss and listen to important topics in their field. For example, the summit addressed how climate change is driving an increase in wildfires and how lithium batteries can be a fire risk. The batteries catch fire quickly, giving people little time to react. Because of that, fire deaths are increasing, as well. This year's summit had double the attendance from last year's, Evrim Bunn, a spokesperson for the Federal Emergency Management Agency, said. Frederick County Fire Chief Tom Coe said in an interview after the event that the summit was motivating and enlightening. KTXL-TV FOX 40 SACRAMENTO Women in Arkansas breaking boundaries in the emergency responder industry VIDEO: According to the U.S. Fire Administration in the volunteer fire service industry, only 11% of the people are women, but in Bono, they are changing that number. The Bono Volunteer Fire Department has six female members of the 27 total making them just less than 25%. For Tracey Snell, it was not something she really thought about. "It is not something I grew up thinking I would do, not in a million years," Snell said. Racheal Blansett is another member of the department and started with the junior program. She said it's not an easy transition. "At first it is tough because you are a female, you must prove your worth. You have to be strong, you have to be level-headed, and be able to talk to the guys," Blansett said. Blansett is not the only junior member who worked her way up.
