Thousands of bogus 911 calls costing City of San Antonio resources, money The 911 system is there for everyone to use in an emergency, a way to summon help quickly from police, firefighters or paramedics. However, not everyone who dials those three numbers is in desperate measures. "We do have people who call in and give incomplete information or incorrect information," said Belinda Esquivel, a communications manager for the San Antonio Police Department. "We've had several like that on any given day." Esquivel said bogus calls make up a small portion of the nearly 2.4 million emergency and non-emergency calls that the city fields each year. However, those kinds of calls could prevent someone who actually needs help from getting it. "There might be kids or some young adults who may think it's funny to call in but it's taking resources from the actual calls," she said. KSAT-TV ABC 12 SAN ANTONIO Follow-up: Company fined $399K after tank cleaning workers, firefighters exposed to toxic gas in Beaumont The U.S. Department of Labor said Monday that a company with facilities in Beaumont was fined $399,349 after employees and first responders were exposed to a toxic gas in an April 2023 incident. Two employees of Trimac Transportation Inc., which operates as National Tank Services -- a national tank cleaning company -- suffered injuries when exposed to hydrogen sulfide – a flammable, highly toxic colorless gas. The gas was present during the cleaning process of a tanker truck on April 25, 2023, in Beaumont. Two municipal firefighters responding to the scene also suffered injuries from the gas. Federal investigators determined Trimac Transportation Inc. did not provide adequate respiratory protection, resulting in two employees being transported to the hospital, one of them being hospitalized due to the exposure. KPRC-TV NBC 2 HOUSTON Montgomery County agencies start cadet training programs to boost firefighting ranks Montgomery County officials are turning to in-house training and community college partnerships to recruit firefighters as growth continues. The county has a population of nearly 700,000, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. The population is anticipated to increase as residential development continues across the county. With more people moving in comes an increase in call volume, said Jason Millsaps, executive director of the county's Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management. To be able to keep up with the 911 calls, agencies such as Porter and North Montgomery County fire departments have implemented cadet academies to recruit more staff. These cadets are paid while participating in the five to six month programs to become firefighter and EMT certified. HOUSTON CHRONICLE - METERED SITE No injuries reported after tractor trailer rolls over, catches fire in Texarkana PHOTOS: No injuries were reported after a tractor trailer rolled over Wednesday night in Texarkana and caught fire. Texarkana Police said the crash on westbound Interstate 30 "caused a lot of mayhem" and it is believed the truck possibly had a tire blowout. The truck hit the guardrail before rolling over and catching fire. "When we got there, it was already fully involved," officials said. "Thankfully, neither of the two people in the truck were hurt." Officials said it took the Texarkana Fire Department about an hour to put out the fire, and another four hours to clear the roadway before it could be reopened. VIDEO: Massive Florida house fire started in the garage Firefighters battled an early morning blaze Thursday after a fire broke out in the garage of a Miami Springs home, officials said. The fire broke out around 4:20 a.m. at a home located at 851 Hunting Lodge Drive in Miami Springs. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Division Chief Marc Chavers said when crews arrived, they found heavy flames coming from the home's garage. Wind made the fire worse and it spread to other areas of the house, burning through the garage doors and igniting two cars outside, Chavers said. Video from the scene showed massive flames coming from the ceiling of the home as fire crews worked to put them out. The fire was brought under control but at least 40% of the house was burned, Chavers said. WTVJ-TV NBC 6 MIAMI Colorado fire rescue launches ‘tiered response' to emergency calls VIDEO: Aurora Fire Rescue is changing the way it responds to certain calls as part of a new effort to better use resources. As of Wednesday, the department is now operating on a "tiered response approach," allowing the department to dispatch units based on the severity of the incident they're responding to. Fire Chief Alec Oughton said it's a major shift from the traditional response of sending the closest units with lights and sirens to most calls. "There are calls where minutes matter, and there are calls where minutes don't impact the outcome," Oughton said. "So what we've done with this change in our response model is really adjust our response to better match the risk that's associated with the call that's coming in." WTVC-TV ABC/FOX 9 CHATTANOOGA New Arkansas laws meeting essential needs of firefighters as mental health struggles become more evident The Arkansas Professional Firefighters Association is shedding light on two new laws in the state looking to meet some of the most essential needs for their responders. The union recently selected Sen. Clarke Tucker (D-Little Rock) as their legislator of the year after his help with two bills that became law in the recent legislative session. "They do so much, I mean they put their lives on the line for us every day," Tucker said Tuesday. Act 529 provides 168 hours of military leave time for firefighters for annual training requirements or other duties performed in an official duty status. "Our guys were running out of leave – they were exhausting their military leave then having to use their own leave or unpaid leave to both serve their community and serve the country," Arkansas Professional Firefighters Political Director Matthew Stallings said.
