Multiple agencies respond to large fire at south Bexar County commercial lot VIDEO: Several units were called to assist in extinguishing a large fire in southeast Bexar County, in a commercial lot where the primary structure was built in 1980 and went up in flames Wednesday evening. No injuries were reported. The fire broke out along 11708 U.S. Highway 181 South around 5:30 p.m., sparking a response of at least a dozen fire units from local agencies, including the San Antonio Fire Department. The building on the lot was being used to house carnival supplies and was full of stuffed animals at the time, hence the black smoke. Initially labeled as a brush fire, authorities said the blaze may have started at a BBQ pit near the warehouse before eventually spreading to some nearby RVs. Though a resident at the adjacent Aztec Mobile Home Park told KENS 5 she heard what sounded like explosions, authorities said that was likely tires popping. KENS-TV CBS 5 SAN ANTONIO Woman found dead after fire breaks out at Baytown apartment, fire department says A woman was found dead Tuesday after a fire burned through an apartment in Baytown. At about 10:13 p.m., Baytown Fire Department crews responded to a fire at Oaks of Baytown Apartments in the 2300 block of Taft Circle. Fire crews found flames and heavy smoke coming from an apartment on the first floor. Crews acted fast to stop the flames and had received reports of a possible victim inside. As they battled the fire, firefighters also went in to search for the victim. After the fire was declared to be under control, a second search was performed and a woman was found dead. The apartment where the fire started suffered significant damage but the apartment above had minor damages. No other injuries or deaths were reported, according to the fire department. KTRK-TV ABC 13 HOUSTON Popular Kendall County restaurant burns to the ground PHOTOS: The beloved Hillbillyz of Texas restaurant was destroyed by a major fire on Tuesday, according to fire crews. Hillbillyz is located just 17 miles outside of Boerne, TX. Several departments, including firefighters from Kendalia, Sisterdale, Bergheim, Boerne, and Waring were called to battle the blaze. On Wednesday, Hillbillyz took to social media where they thanked their staff for their hard work and fire crews that handled the fire. "These are good people that work to help others without any promise of financial gain. They help people because they want to. These are the people that make this country great," Hillbillys shared. "As the phoenix rises from its ashes, so will Hillbillyz. More to come" The cause of fire remains under investigation. WOAI-TV NBC/CW 4 SAN ANTONIO Girl rescued on roof of home after it went up in flames, San Antonio Fire Department says A girl was pulled to safety from a roof by firefighters after her home went up in flames on the Southwest Side, according to San Antonio Fire Department. The fire happened around 7 p.m. Wednesday in the 7100 block of Comet Manor near Rige Bay. Firefighters said the fire began in the kitchen, and the girl was sleeping when she was alerted by smoke alarms. She tried to go out of her bedroom door but saw the home had filled with smoke and heat, according to SAFD. She then went out of her bedroom window and onto the roof to escape. Fire officials were able to pull her to safety from the roof, and they rescued three dogs. She was the only one home at the time of the fire. Four people total, including the girl, live at the home. No injuries were reported. Firefighters were able to extinguish the flames and get them under control. KSAT-TV ABC 12 SAN ANTONIO Follow up: No official cause to The Robinson Family Farm fire in Temple, at least not yet It's not what many are going to want to hear but there still is not an official cause to The Robinson Family Farm fire on Oct. 15. Investigators wish it was easier, but unfortunately there just isn't one obvious ignition source at this time. "It's frustrating to not be able to tell somebody how the fire started exactly, but if we can't say 100 percent we have to leave it undetermined," said Chris Mahlstedt, the Bell County fire marshal. Mahlstedt is the lead investigator of the massive blaze at the farm where more than 70 vehicles were damaged by the fast moving flames. "I just ask for their patience at this point, because of the size of the incident -- it's more complicated," he said. "So, it's going to take just a little bit longer." Since the day of the fire, Mahlstedt has said the most likely cause was an improperly discarded cigarette, but he wants to be able to say it without a doubt. KCEN-TV NBC 6 TEMPLE Garrison Volunteer Fire Department creates haunted house to raise funds for equipment VIDEO: The Garrison Volunteer Fire Department puts on an annual haunted house to raise money for their department but also to bring a thrill to the community. The fire department has put on a haunted house for the community for the last five years. Assistant Fire Chief Grant Wheeler says they capitalize on people's fears and put it inside the haunted house. "We have a little bit of everything, we do run a theme most of the time. With that theme we don't always stay on target on each and every room. We kind of hit a couple of rooms within that theme, that way it will flow from year to year," Wheeler said. The haunted house takes place inside an old, abandoned nursing home behind the fire station. The fire department in previous years used the building for the attraction only, but they now own the building. Fire Chief Ricky Colle says this is their biggest fundraiser every year. VIDEO: Massive fire rips through 3-story commercial building in downtown Los Angeles Firefighters battled a massive blaze that ripped through a three-story commercial building in downtown Los Angeles Wednesday evening. Flames ripped through the roof of the boarded-up building located near the intersection of Los Angeles and 3rd streets. The blaze erupted just after 7:30 p.m., according to the Los Angeles Fire Department. Smoke billowed from the building after most of the flames were extinguished an hour later. It is unclear what sparked the blaze. No injuries were immediately reported. About 135 firefighters battled the fire. The building was red-tagged. LAFD says an official knockdown won't be declared most likely until Thursday morning. KABC-TV ABC 7 LOS ANGELES Laura Kavanagh sworn in as New York City's next FDNY fire commissioner, 1st woman in department's 157 year history VIDEO: Laura Kavanagh will be named New York City's next fire commissioner today. She will also become the first woman to lead the FDNY in its 157-year history. Mayor Eric Adams will make the announcement at Engine 33, Ladder 9 in Noho, a historic building where the city's first fire commissioner was headquartered. Kavanagh has been serving as acting FDNY commissioner since February. She's been at the helm of the nation's largest fire department since Daniel Nigro stepped down as commissioner without naming a successor. Nigro appointed Kavanagh as his second-in-command in 2017. Local 2507, the union representing the FDNY's EMTS, paramedics and fire inspectors, issued a statement about Kavanagh's appointment saying, "We congratulate her. She's a great candidate. She's a champion who fought for EMS and will continue fighting for us." WABC-TV ABC 7 NEW YORK New Illinois Law Requires Smoke Detectors With 10-Year Battery Life Or Hardwired Home Units A new state law that goes into effect Jan. 1 requires all homes to have smoke detectors with a 10-year sealed battery life or a hardwired system. The Rockford Fire Department and the Illinois Firefighters Association held a news conference on Wednesday to draw attention to the law and urge property owners to make the necessary changes now. The sealed-battery smoke alarms are considered more reliable than previous technology, where 9-volt batteries could run out of power or be removed by owners while cooking who then forget to replace them. "We do know that smoke alarms save lives, only when they work," said Matt Knott, Rockford Fire Department division chief. "A working smoke alarm reduces the risk of dying in a home fire by up to 50%." ROCK RIVER CURRENT Hidrent app in Maine provides off duty firefighters more ways to help their community From house fires to car accidents, firefighters are trained to respond to emergency situations. If we already trust these men and women in those moments, why not trust them with smaller jobs around the home? That's the idea behind a new app called "Hidrent," spelled a little differently. It's a service that connects off duty firefighters with anyone in the area who needs a task completed. Hidrent was first launched in 2018 but recently became available in the Bangor area. The app's founder says he was inspired by a firefighter in his family who told him that many in the profession are also quite handy. "Especially for older adults who are aging in place, it's perfect because we provide them a direct connection to that off-duty firefighter that can help them with a small home task" said Dave Himbuch, Founder and CEO of Hidrent. WABI-TV CBS 5 BANGOR Pennsylvania EMS gets new wearable carbon monoxide detectors after day care leak For years, Allentown EMS has had carbon monoxide detectors available for crew, but only one detector per ambulance. After a significant number of carbon monoxide incidents last year, the city moved to get a wearable monitor for each full-time EMS employee. "We've had the meters, but we wanted to take it a step further, use them more," said Mehmet Barzev, chief of EMS operations for the city of Allentown. Then, earlier this month a carbon monoxide leak sickened nearly 30 children and five adults at an Allentown day care center. Carbon monoxide monitors carried by responding firefighters were crucial to the early detection that the odorless, colorless gas was the culprit. LEHIGH VALLEY LIVE PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
