No one injured after fire damages a dozen apartments in College Station VIDEO: Residents were accounted for and safe Tuesday evening after a fire quickly spread through an apartment building on Marion Pugh Drive near the Texas A&M campus. The fire was reported just after 6:00 p.m. at Treehouse Apartments near George Bush Drive across from the McDonald's restaurant. Firefighters were able to contain the building to building number 7 but the blaze damaged or destroyed all twelve apartments in that unit. Residents say there was work being done on the building at the time of the fire but firefighters say it's too soon to determine exactly what started the fire. "At first there was a little bit of smoke coming from the stairs and then there was more and more," said resident Sierra Richardson. KBTX-TV CBS 3 BRYAN The ‘unseen' threat: Surge of COVID-19 cases affecting Texas firefighters Michael Glynn had a long day. He attended a funeral for a beloved retiree of his department, then went to the hospital to be with the family of another retired firefighter. "Speaking to a firefighter that is dying in a hospital bed and their family is being told they have 15 more minutes? That's sad," he said. "It's sad times for firefighters." Glynn, the President of the Fort Worth Professional Firefighters Association, said it's always been a dangerous line of work. He is also a trustee for the Texas State Association of Fire Fighters, and as a long-time firefighter himself, he knows loss. "But a lot of those hazards are things that you can see and feel and touch and hear," he said, noting that the unseen threat of the coronavirus is what concerns him most. KXAN-TV NBC 36 AUSTIN Honoring 9/11: Central Texas firefighters participate in the 10th Annual Dallas Stair Climb One-hundred-ten flights of stairs. That's how many stairs nearly 400 first responders including the Killeen, Harker Heights and Temple Fire Departments climbed in Dallas to honor the fallen first responders of 9/11. The 10th Annual Dallas Stair Climb was hosted Sunday at 8:46 a.m., which is the time when the first plane struck the first tower on Sept. 11. During the climb, 343 firefighters, 70 law enforcement officers and nine EMS personnel participated. According to the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation, the number 110 is significant to firefighters across the nation. It signifies the number of floors the New York Fire Department took to save those in the World Trade Center. On the anniversary of 9/11, other firefighters around the nation will be following suit. KCEN-TV NBC 6 TEMPLE City of Houston will require unvaccinated employees to get COVID testing twice a month, Mayor Turner says The City of Houston is requiring all unvaccinated employees to take a COVID-19 test twice a month. Mayor Sylvester Turner announced he is signing an executive order to enforce the new policy during a Houston City Council meeting Wednesday. "Failure to adhere to the policy will result in disciplinary action and can even cost you your job," Turner said. The requirement impacts all employees, including firefighters and police. It does not apply to elected or appointed officials of councils, boards or commissions. Turner said 342 city employees, including firefighters and police, currently have coronavirus, according to Wednesday's data. "We've been above 300 for quite some time, and to simply continue to move forward and just report the numbers is not enough," Turner said. "When you have 125 police officer out with COVID, they're not able to perform their job. KHOU-TV CBS 11 HOUSTON PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

WWLP-TV NBC/CW+ 22 SPRINGFIELD Actor Steve Buscemi: Everyone Said ‘Never Forget' 9/11; Some Have No Choice VIDEO: My dad was a sanitation worker for New York City. His message to me and my brothers was, when you turn 18, take whatever civil service test is available. Lucky for me, it was the Fire Department's. I didn't yet know what I wanted to do for a career, but at Engine 55 in Lower Manhattan, I found something even better: a brotherhood. I laid low as a "probie," but by the time my secret other life came out (I'd taken acting classes and dabbled in stand-up), I understood that busting balls is how firefighters express affection. When, after four years on the job, it became impossible to juggle my shifts with both a movie and a play, I took a leave of absence, figuring I'd be back. Seventeen years later, I was. One of the strongest sensations that flooded over me on Sept. 11, 2001, was that feeling of connection.
