City Council approves new thermal imaging cameras for Odessa Fire Rescue VIDEO: The Odessa City Council approved the purchase of 11 new Bullard thermal imaging cameras for Odessa Fire Rescue totaling $86,433.27. The new equipment is important for the safety of the firefighters and the public. "It's important that the council invests in these cameras because it's investing in the community, gosh any individual it can save lives," said Council Member At-Large Denise Swanner. Swanner says the cameras are vital. "If they're in need or something these cameras will detect where the firemen are at and just anyone in the fire," said Swanner. There will be one on every fire unit and every battalion chief and division captain will have one. "We can use them in many different ways, search and rescue, ventilation hazmat stuff, locating fires on structure fires, looking for hotspots," said OFR Chief Jason Cotton. KOSA-TV CBS 7 ODESSA Longview apartment residents rescued from second-story window sent to hospital An apartment fire sent three people to a hospital, two in critical condition. It happened in Longview at the Summer Green Apartments in the 100 block of East Hawkins Parkway around 4:30 a.m. Wednesday. One of the victims was hanging out of a second story window when firefighters arrived. Shortly after 4:30 a.m., a Longview Fire Battalion Chief arrived at the Summer Green Apartments to find a woman at a second-story window, according to Longview Fire Marshal Kevin May. "Engine company arrived. With a ladder they were able to rescue her pretty quickly. She said that there were other people in the apartment," May said. May said crews entered the apartment, began a search, and found two more victims. KLTV ABC 7 TYLER Firefighters work to put out large brush fire, Fort Bend County officials say Crews were working to tame a large brush fire in Fort Bend County Wednesday evening, according to officials. The Fort Bend County Emergency Services said the fire happened near the intersection of Fort Bend Toll and McHard Road. SkyEye was above the scene, where smoke could be seen clouding the area. "Unfortunately, we're seeing a lot of these (fires) in these extreme heat conditions," ABC13 SkyEye Reporter Tammy Rose said from above the fire. "It was hard to spot the fire through the haze." Fire crews from multiple counties were at the scene assisting. Firefighters didn't mention any injuries, and the cause of the fire is unknown. Authorities were asking everyone to avoid the area and find alternate routes. KTRK-TV ABC 13 HOUSTON Bryan City Council Receives Update On Fire Department's Mobile Health Unit The success of the Bryan Fire Department's mobile health unit, sending a paramedic in a SUV instead of an ambulance, was shared with the city council during a workshop presentation on Tuesday. Assistant Fire Chief D.J. Capener says the mobile unit has responded to 2,400 calls. In 16 percent of those cases, the paramedic called for an ambulance. Capener says using the mobile unit has kept the fire department from buying a sixth ambulance, which carries a yearly operational cost of $780,000 dollars. And fewer than ten College Station ambulances came into Bryan in August 2023. That is compared with about 160 in July of 2021. The mobile unit has contributed to generating more revenue than expected for the fire department by $1.1 million dollars. Capener says the fire department is investigating the addition of a 9-1-1 dispatcher with medical training. WTAW-AM 1620 COLLEGE STATION PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

Firefighters battled flames into Thursday morning. All 49 apartments in the complex have been impacted, and 80 residents have been displaced. Officials are telling people in the area to conserve water. Oxford police said to avoid South 3rd Street between Market and Hodgson Streets. The fire started just after 11:30 p.m. at the apartment complex, at Third and Locust Streets. Flames spread to multiple buildings including businesses and a warehouse. A structural collapse also occurred. In total, 17 businesses were damaged, including 13 residential buildings. The fire chief said one firefighter suffered minor burns, and several nearby fire companies were called out to help, including some from out of state. They're hoping changes at the state and local level will provide more resources to help alleviate the problem. They received more than 53,000 calls last year and oftentimes, there's not much they could do to help those on the other end. San Diego Fire Chief Colin Stowell said responding to mental health calls has put a strain on his department, it's affecting all first responders. "You're talking about over 130,000 hours, personnel hours just that year on scene for mental health emergencies," said Chief Stowell. That's the equivalent of 36 first responders spending their entire shift every day for a year just responding to mental health calls. Chief Stowell also said it creates overcrowding at local hospitals because there's nowhere else for the patients to go. KFMB-TV CBS/CW 8 SAN DIEGO FEMA funding study to help firefighters prevent injuries Bridget Melton, Ed.D., professor in the Department of Health Sciences and Kinesiology at Georgia Southern University, is part of a team awarded $1.1 million from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to assist with a study aimed to promote wellness in firefighters and first responders. Melton is collaborating with researchers at the University of Kentucky as part of a three-year study that builds on a decade of foundational work by Melton and the Tactical Athlete Initiative team in the Waters College of Health Professions, College of Education and the Jiann-Ping Hsu College of Public Health. The grant will help the researchers assist firefighters with injury mitigation, better work outcomes and reduction in financial burdens. COASTAL COURIER New safety legislation announced on 5-year-anniversary of Massachusetts gas explosions VIDEO: Five years after over-pressurized gas traveled through underground lines fueling fires and explosions across the Merrimack Valley, new legislation aims to prevent that from ever happening again. "We proposed new regulations to affect nearly 2.3 million miles of pipelines across the country," said Tristan Brown, the Deputy Administrator of the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Administration part of the Department of Transportation. The explosions destroyed five homes, damaged more than a hundred properties, injured firefighters and civilians, forced fifty thousand people to evacuate their homes and caused the tragic death of Leonel Rondon. The legislation will be named after Rondon and was co-sponsored by Senator Ed Markey. WFXT-TV FOX 25 BOSTON Related: Lawrence Fire Chief remembers Merrimack Valley blasts PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
