Frisco fire chief retires Frisco Fire Chief Mark Piland retired Sept. 14 after more than nine years of service with the city, according to a city news release. He will be looking to "pursue new career opportunities," the news release stated. Across more than 40 years in fire and rescue services, Piland has worked as fire chief for Volusia County Fire Services in Volusia County, Florida; shift commander of operations for the Virginia Beach Fire Department in Virginia Beach, Virginia; and as chief of the Frisco Fire Department. "I'd like to thank the city of Frisco for the opportunity to serve the community over the past nine-plus years," Piland said in a statement. "I am grateful for the ability to oversee such exponential growth and work with a dedicated group of firefighters and administration. I'm looking forward to this next chapter and wish the city well as it continues to strive for excellence for the community." COMMUNITY IMPACT San Antonio Fire Department's groundbreaking program has offered 1,000 units of whole blood in the field VIDEO: A San Antonio Fire Department program is now the gold standard across the country, making whole blood available on ambulances and at trauma scenes. Three years ago, San Antonio mom Tiffany Kieschnick was driving to the store to get her son iced tea. "I ended up having a stroke on my way home, and I flipped my car into a ditch and coded in the car. The paramedics actually said that they were shocked when I came back to life," she said. San Antonio EMS had just begun carrying whole blood to trauma scenes to allow for immediate transfusions. "Had they not had whole blood on that ambulance, I was not going to make it," she said. Kieschnick was the first patient to receive whole blood in the field, not just in San Antonio but in the nation. That's because SAFD created the program in late 2018. KSAT-TV ABC 12 SAN ANTONIO Newton community rallies behind volunteer firefighter battling stage 3 colon cancer The community in Newton is rallying behind one of their own who is battling cancer. Shancey Bowman has been a volunteer with the Newton Volunteer Fire Department for six years meanwhile his wife has been there 23 years and is currently the chief. Bowman was diagnosed with stage three colon cancer in July and has been driving back and forth to Beaumont for treatments ever since. Shancey moved from Arkansas to Newton when he met his wife Melanie Smith Bowman in 2018. He's become an important asset to the community since then. Apart from being a volunteer firefighter, Shancey also worked at the local feed store and even had a seasonal gig as the city's Santa Claus. Through all the emotional and physical hardships, Shancey remains determined. "I plan on being Santa at Christmas time and I plan on going back to work," he said. KBMT-TV ABC/NBC 12 BEAUMONT Hardin County breaks ground on new fire station The ground breaking ceremony for a new fire station in Hardin County occurred Tuesday. First responders, including firefighters, ambulance workers and elected officials, attended the ground breaking last night for the new fire station off FM 92 near FM 4-18 in north Silsbee. Silsbee Fire Chief Robin Jones tells KFDM the new building and new equipment will improve fire protection and should help decrease insurance costs because of that added protection. The station will also now be able to serve a larger population. It'll serve families and businesses in Emergency Services District (ESD) six. KFDM-TV CBS/CW+/FOX 6 BEAUMONT Hay bales fall off truck, catch fire and block traffic in Marlin PHOTO: Officials in Marlin were working to clear Business 6 after a tractor trailer pulling a load of round bales of hay hit rail road tracks and spilled a dozen bales into the road, which later caught fire around 5:30 Wednesday evening. The bales were blocking the road, but as crews worked to clear them, a hay bale caught fire causing a chain reaction with the other bales, according to the Marlin Police Department. The rail road tracks also caught on fire. The Marlin Fire Department, Tx Dot, Marlin Volunteer Fire Department, Union Pacific, City of Marlin Public Works along with Marlin Police Department worked to clear the scene. The road was temporarily closed. KWTX-TV CBS 10 WACO Georgetown community to mark 1-year anniversary of Ponderosa Pet Resort fire On Sunday, the Georgetown community will gather to remember the lives of 75 pets who were killed in a fire at a boarding facility one year ago. On Sept. 18, 2021, a fire at the Ponderosa Pet Resort killed 75 dogs who were trapped inside. No smoke alarm or sprinklers were installed at the facility, and no personnel was at the facility when the fire broke out. The incident resulted in fire code changes in the City of Georgetown. This Sunday, on the one-year anniversary of the fire, a memorial will be held beginning at 8 p.m. at the site where the pets died, located at 2815 North Austin Ave. in Georgetown. The memorial is being organized by a group called Protect All Pets. Fire investigators said they could not determine the exact cause of the fire at Ponderosa Pet Resort but had six potential causes involving electrical equipment at the facility. VIDEO: 2 homes destroyed in Pennsylvania fire: 'We lost everything' A fire broke out and destroyed two homes in New Eagle after police said a man was burning weeds with a propane torch in his yard and went back inside. A neighbor who saw the fire on First Avenue alerted homeowner Randy Leach, who tried to put the fire out with a garden hose. One of the homes, which is used for storage and recreation and was unoccupied, burned to the ground. The fire spread to their other house next door. "The homeowner was burning weeds with a torch and went inside," New Eagle Fire Chief Paul Pro said. "And the next thing you know, the structure next to his house that he lives was on fire." Both homes were destroyed, though no one was hurt. Randy and Carole got out safely with their dogs. "We lost everything," Carole said. "Thankful that me and my husband got out with our dog and my dad's dog got out too." KSAT-TV ABC 12 SAN ANTONIO Hawaii firefighters join police for key training on active school shooter situations First responders are training together for an active shooter on campus. Their focus is saving lives faster. For the exercise, it's an active shooter on campus and first responders from the Honolulu Police Department and Honolulu Fire Department carried mock victims from the building into an ambulance. Their priorities are stopping the killing, stopping the dying and rapid casualty evacuation. "What we are preaching to our officers now, that second priority of work is stopping the dying which is starting the medicine process," said HPD Lt. Neil Han. National figures show it usually takes 3 to 4 minutes before an active shooter suspect kills himself, is barricaded, is shot or arrested. "That scene theoretically becomes a warm zone if the intel is there is only one suspect," said Han. Then the rescue task force can move in. HAWAII NEWS NOW 100-Year-Old North Carolina Fire Commissioner Gets A Big Thank You Usually when people turn 100, they're no longer active in their profession, however, Curtis Kennedy is anything but usual. He recently celebrated his 100th birthday, but Kennedy – an original fire commissioner for the McLeansville Fire Department when it began in 1951 – still plays an active role as a fire commissioner for the department. On Thursday, Sept. 15, the Guilford County Board of Commissioners plans to honor the energetic centenarian. Earlier this year, the McLeansville Fire Department showed its appreciation for Kennedy soon after he turned 100. Kennedy graduated from Rankin High School in Greensboro and enlisted in the Navy during World War II. He later went to work for the Guilford County Planning Department as an electrical inspector and eventually became the director of inspectors. RHINO TIMES 9/11 flag displayed in Virginia while making its way around the world VIDEO: On Wednesday morning the Virginia Patriot Guard Riders arrived in Lexington for a 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony. A flag that once flew in New York at the World Trade Center after the September 11th attacks was displayed on the flag pole at the Lexington fire department for 9 minutes and 11 seconds during the ceremony. The Virginia Patriot Guard Riders rode to Lexington from Richmond on Wednesday morning as they journey to different locations for others to see. On their way to Lexington, other groups joined in on the ride along the way. "When you touch it, there's life in it. It's the lives of the people that died in the towers," said Ride Captain, Bobby Lipes. Since 2001 the flag has been in the possession of different motorcycle groups across the nation. 4 years ago, it was given to the Virginia Patriot Guard Riders who continue to carry out the mission.
