Hooton named new Tyler Fire Marshal The Tyler City Council approved the appointment of a new fire marshal Wednesday morning. The council unanimously voted to approve Joey Hooton for the job, a man with nearly 20 years of experience. He has served on the Command Staff for the last six years and recently earned a master's degree from UT Tyler in public administration, Tyler Fire Chief David Coble said. "Chief Hooton has decided he wants to expand his horizon to be more rounded in his fire service career, so he wanted to move over to this fire marshal position for those reasons," Coble said. Hooton holds certifications through the Texas Commission on Fire Protection as a Master Firefighter, Fire Service Instructor, Fire Officer IV, Emergency Vehicle Technician, and Rope Rescue Technician. KETK-TV NBC 56 TYLER Howe to establish full-time fire department A full-time fire department is coming to the fast-growing City of Howe. The city council made the decision to hire a chief and paid firefighters to serve the community of 3,600 located just south of Sherman. The volunteer department has been serving Howe since 1951. There are currently 15 firefighters on the roster. Chief Robert Maniet is eager for the new department to increase in size and availability. "This is a huge step for us," he said. "Moving forward with this, we'll have six full-time people along with a fire chief that we can keep our staff up and have more response time availability." Even with the addition of a permanent department, volunteer firefighters will continue to serve the city. The city's new fire station is looking to hire three emergency medical technicians, three paramedics, and a chief. Operations are on track to start in January. KTEN-TV NBC/ABC/CW+ 10 SHERMAN Killeen Council approves funding mental health clinician for local firefighters First responders deal with trauma as part of their job so much so that suicide has become a potential job hazard for firefighters. But Killeen Fire Chief James Kubinski said the Killeen Fire Department took a huge step forward when the Killeen City Council approved funding for a mental health clinician specifically for the fire department. The resolution, which passed 6-0 Tuesday, awards $45,000 annually for a mental health clinician, a new position which will soon join the staff of 238 firefighters, paramedics and other employees who make up the fire department. "We know we're going to see situations and things that most human beings typically don't see," Kubinski said Wednesday in a phone call with the Herald. "So we're prepared for it to a certain extent, but it doesn't change the human element from seeing things like that." KILLEEN DAILY HERALD Construction begins on new Corrigan Volunteer Fire Department station Corrigan Volunteer Fire Department will soon get a brand-new station. The current location is off North Home Street and will be relocated less than a mile to Geneva Street. The department began raising money for a new station in 2020 and has had thousands of dollars donated by residents and businesses. "This is not a fire station," said Corrigan VFD Captain Zach Ivy, of their current facility. The building they use now is nearly 50 years old and was originally used as a warehouse. The building also currently shares office space with the city's municipal court. Ivy said most of the infrastructure is rotting and detaching. "It's got a bunch of holes in it, the walls are falling down. Dust gets in--we can wash the charges, keep the tracks clean," he said. KTRE-TV ABC 9 LUFKIN PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

VIDEO: Blaze consumes historic building in Massachusetts after fire breaks out in bar with patrons inside Fire crews worked late into the night to contain a massive fire that engulfed a historic building in Templeton that housed a pub and a pool hall, officials said. The blaze broke out around 10 p.m. at the Otter River Hotel, where open mic night was underway at the Otter River Pub. Fire crews used ladder trucks to fight the intense flames and several nearby buildings were evacuated. There were no reported injuries and fire officials say the building is a total loss. "This was a historic building to the town of Templeton, it has been a bar for many, many years here in town and it has been here for more than 100 years ," said Templeton Fire Chief Dickie, who added construction materials may have helped spread the flames. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. WHDH-TV ABC 7 BOSTON A look back at Southwest Florida's Hurricane Ian one year later PHOTO GALLERY: Hurricane Ian rocked Southwest Florida one year ago. On Sept. 28, 2022, Ian made landfall as a powerful Category 4 storm, devastating Naples and Fort Myers. In South Sarasota County and Charlotte County, flooding caused multiple water rescues. Though the outlook was at times grim and the situations devastating, the Suncoast rallied around one another as we often do. While the ABC7 News Crew was locked down in the station and in several safe locations, viewers were our eyes and ears. We are sharing some of the photos sent to us by ABC7 fans from that time. Organizers said they hope the tattoos for 30 first responders over two days will help those on the front lines continue to heal. After 15 years as a tattoo artist, Matty Stolzenburg said he realizes his job is more than just ink. "People kind of use us as therapy," he said. "We do a lot of talking." On Wednesday, Sept. 27, his office was inside Waukesha's Raised Grain Brewery. Stolzenburg was one of 16 volunteers helping first responders process their pain. "I just remember the shouting on the radio, trying to figure out what was going on," said Ryan-ann Carpenter. "911 just blew up." WITI-TV FOX 6 MILWAUKEE San Diego Fire Department to receive new, custom made $1.25M fireboat VIDEO: The San Diego Fire Rescue Department will receive a boat similar to the "Triton," a high performance fireboat thanks to a $1.25 million dollar check from the State of California. "I was able to get it out in this last budget. It's been a need for a long time to replace a boat that's been in service since the early 90s. It's clearly outdated. For example, we will go from one fire cannon to 3 fire cannons. It's a huge, huge improvement and this will help us save lives," said Brian Maienchein, Assembly member for the 76th district. The new vessel will aid in search and rescue, marina and shore fires and other essential life saving duties. It will replace a fireboat that has been in service since 1991. The new boat will look similar to the Triton. It will just be smaller to help with maneuverability. KFMB-TV CBS 8 SAN DIEGO Hyundai and Kia recall nearly 3.4 million vehicles due to fire risk and urge owners to park outdoors Hyundai and Kia are recalling nearly 3.4 million vehicles in the U.S. and telling owners to park them outside due to the risk of engine compartment fires. The recalls cover multiple car and SUV models from the 2010 through 2019 model years including Hyundai's Santa Fe SUV and Kia's Sorrento SUV. Documents posted Wednesday by the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration say the anti-lock brake control module can leak fluid and cause an electrical short, which can touch off a fire while the vehicles are parked or being driven. The automakers are advising owners to park outdoors and away from structures until repairs are done. Dealers will replace the anti-lock brake fuse at no cost to owners. Kia says in documents that it will send notification letters to owners starting Nov. 14. For Hyundai the date is Nov. 21. CBS NEWS PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
