Firefighters battling Johnson County pallet fire take shelter after spotting funnel cloud VIDEO: Firefighters in Johnson County are still on the scene of a large wooden pallet fire. They had to put their battle against the stubborn blaze on hold briefly Monday night because of a tornado threat. The fire is burning at a wooden pallet plant in Lillian, which is about 30 miles south of Fort Worth. Investigators believe it started around 10:30 p.m. Monday because of a lightning strike. Firefighters had to work quickly because the plant is in an area surrounded by homes. As many as 15 fire departments were called in to help battle the flames. At one point, they had to take shelter because there were reports of a possible tornado on the ground nearby. Alvarado Fire Captain Brad Hargrove told FOX 4 it was one of the scariest situations he's had to deal with. KDFW-TV FOX 4 DALLAS Fires up by 26% across San Antonio this fiscal year, fire chief says VIDEO: San Antonio Fire Chief Charles Hood said the number of fires in the city is up 26% this fiscal year compared to last, with District 5 reporting the most. On Monday, Hood addressed concerns about several fires in recent weeks from East Side residents at the Ella Austin Community Center. Since October, firefighters have responded to 39 fires on the East Side. Eight have been intentionally set. Of those, two have some common elements SAFD is investigating. "There's not a serial arsonist in (District 2) or in San Antonio, but we've had an uptick in fires of about 26%. We've had 10 fire fatalities this fiscal year. Last year, we had five to seven," Hood said. Hood wants residents to be on the lookout in their neighborhoods in case they see anything suspicious and encourages them to review security footage if they have any. KSAT-TV ABC 12 SAN ANTONIO Fire engulfs northeast Bexar County home, causing $225,000 in damage A fire quickly tore through a northeast Bexar County home on Monday, causing hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage, according to fire officials. The fire was reported in the 7300 block of Goya Drive near Walzem and Gibbs Sprawl Road shortly before noon, according to Robert Hogan, Fire Chief of Bexar County ESD 10. The flames started in the backside of the home and quickly spread through the roof, Hogan said. After firefighters ensured no one was in the home, they evacuated as the flames had already consumed most of the attic. Firefighters spent roughly half an hour putting out the flames. Hogan said the damage caused by the fire amounted to $225,000. The owners of the home were not there when the fire broke out. Hogan said the Red Cross has been called to assist those families in the aftermath of the fire. KSAT-TV ABC 12 SAN ANTONIO Burned body found in alleyway in Dallas neighborhood, police say A body was found burned in an alleyway in a North Oak Cliff neighborhood on Sunday morning, Dallas police said. Police said they responded around 9:20 a.m. to the 1300 block of Kings Highway, near the intersection of North Tyler Street and West Davis Street. Officers and fire crews arrived and found the body of a male victim that was burned, according to police. Police did not say if there were any other visible injuries. Police said the Dallas County Medical Examiner's office will have to use forensic techniques to identify the victim. According to police, the victim had been wearing boots, jeans, a dress shirt and a wedding ring. Anyone who may have information is asked to call homicide detectives at 214-671-3702. WFAA-TV ABC 8 DALLAS Follow-up: Investigators find ash tray linked to Chicken Oil Company fire in Bryan Chicken Oil Company remains closed after a fire broke out Sunday afternoon. According to the Bryan Fire Department, the fire started in an outdoor ash tray, and they believe wind played a factor in the building catching fire. Fire damage is isolated to the back of the building but there is smoke damage throughout the restaurant. Fire crews responded to the restaurant within five minutes of receiving the call, which they said prevented the fire from spreading even more. Crews on scene Sunday said they understand the love for the restaurant. "The community is always behind this place, they love this place. As soon as I heard the call come out, said it was at Chicken Oil Company, you know you just think ‘oh no' that's just one of those buildings that could be devastating if it burns down and the guys did a great job stopping the fire before it was a total loss," Bryan Fire Department Deputy Chief, Jordan Gallagher, said. KBTX-TV CBS 3 BRYAN Firefighters rescue several people in separate accidents along San Antonio highways Police and firefighters were called out to two major accidents early Monday morning where several people had to be rescued. In total, three people had to be rescued from both wrecks. The first accident happened just before 1 a.m. off SE Military Drive and Bardwell Drive on the West Side. Police said the driver lost control, went off the road and rolled several times. The vehicle landed on top of the passenger's arm. Firefighters had to free the woman using special equipment. The passenger was taken to the hospital in critical condition, while the driver was listed in stable condition at the hospital. Within 20 minutes of the initial crash, Firefighters responded to another wreck along SW Loop 410 near Highway 151 on the Southeast Side. WOAI-TV NBC/CW 4 SAN ANTONIO PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

Firefighters battling pallet fire in Texas take shelter after spotting funnel cloud VIDEO: Firefighters in Johnson County are still on the scene of a large wooden pallet fire. KDFW-TV FOX 4 DALLAS PHOTOS: The 1976 Heyday fire in St. Louis was one for the ages In 1971, a fire broke out in the vacant Heyday Shoe building, once a maker of women's wear. Smoke rose high above the old manufacturing district west of downtown. The dark column was but a foreshadow. The fire burned away the roof and windows at 2032 Locust Street, but the seven-story brick walls remained. Five years later, a city agency owned the hulk. There was talk of selling it for a parking lot. It sat empty with a skeletal interior of heavy timbers and no roof — a perfect flue, as a fire official later would say. Shortly after 4 p.m. on April 2, 1976, fire broke out again inside the Heyday. A nearby businessman heard an explosion and saw flames. He probably heard the fireball erupt. It quickly raged through the Heyday and jumped across Locust to the St. Louis Housing Authority warehouse, then to other buildings along Locust. A firestorm was on. ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH - METERED SITE Firefighters stage fundraisers for Pennsylvania emergency scene photographer who lost leg VIDEO/PHOTOS: Steven Matto shoots some of the most intense fire scene photos ever taken. It's just that most people don't get a chance to see them. Matto, 54, is the official photographer for many Alle-Kiski Valley fire companies, documenting more than 700 emergencies. His photos are used by fire companies to document their responses as learning tools. Only rarely do they make it into a newspaper or onto television. Recently, though, illness and the loss of a leg have kept him on the sidelines, unable to document the courage and hard work of the volunteers who run into burning buildings instead of away from them. Now, those firefighters are rallying to help their photographer recuperate. A stubborn infection started by a plantar wart required his left leg to be amputated above the knee. Local fire companies are rallying to raise money for Matto's medical and living expenses. PITTSBURGH TRIBUNE-REVIEW Pet resort fire in Texas shines light on safety codes in Florida county Seventy-five dogs were killed in a fire at a Texas pet resort last September. When the fire occurred, there was no staffing overnight at the time and no sprinkler system was in place. Changes to the fire codes in Georgetown, Texas, have already been approved for animal care facilities. Locally, it appears Palm Beach County's fire code for sprinklers is stricter than the state's code. What happened at the Ponderosa Pet Resort in Texas is a real fear for pet owners who use boarding facilities. "There's a lot of care, there's a lot of affection that goes into it, so of course you want them to be taken care of by somebody who will care about them as much as you do," said Lyndon Brown, a local pet owner. Brown has had his pit bull mix Mia for six years. "I always joke and say she's the longest relationship I've had, so they do become like your children," Brown said.
