Argyle home destroyed in fire possibly due to lightning strike, officials say VIDEO: A home in Denton County has been deemed a "total loss" after a lightning strike possibly started a fire Monday night, officials said. The fire happened at about 10 p.m. in the 900 block of Stonecrest Road in Argyle, according to Denton County Emergency Services District #1. An official told WFAA that no one was in the home during the fire, so no one was injured. They also said the house was fully engulfed in flames by the time first responders arrived. Lightning is believed to be the cause of the fire, but that's under investigation. Severe storms were moving through North Texas early Tuesday morning, and more storms were expected later in the day. No other information is available at this time. WFAA-TV ABC 8 DALLAS San Antonio Fire Department battles two-story house fire VIDEO: San Antonio firefighters worked for over an hour Monday afternoon to contain a large house fire on the Northwest Side. Flames could be seen from the roof of a two-story home in the 7600 block of Susan Elaine on Monday afternoon. SAFD believed the fire started in a gazebo attached to the house and then moved to the attic. However, a cause for the fire has yet to be determined. "Once it got hold of the attic, then we were in a pretty good battle," an SAFD battalion chief said. The fire caused crews to take a defensive approach, deploying exterior hoses and an aerial stream. A significant buildup of contents in the attic prevented crews from getting around to extinguish the fire. The battalion chief clarified that while they referred to the conditions in the home as a hoarding situation, the categorization is used anytime a heavy content buildup impedes progress. KSAT-TV ABC 12 SAN ANTONIO Lightning strikes Bullard home twice, causing fire A home in Bullard caught fire multiple times after being hit twice by lightning. Eric Greaser, Smith County Emergency Services District 2 Chief, said after the storms rolled in, crews received a report of smoke inside the attic by the homeowner in the 20200 block of Deer Hollow Drive in the Bullard area. The homeowner found smoke in the attic, which Greaser said was caused by a lightning strike. Greaser said the damage was confined to the attic, and the living space was not impacted. Firefighters then had to suit back up after lightning hit the home for a second time. SCESD and City of Tyler Fire Department remained on scene and regained control. According to a Facebook post, everyone is safe. Since Monday's storms started, crews have responded to multiple downed trees and power lines, especially in the southern part of Smith County, Greaser said. WGRZ-TV NBC 2 BUFFALO Firefighters in one Nebraska city benefit from health screenings worth $1.1 million VIDEO: More than 90% of Omaha firefighters are taking part in a comprehensive physical exam aimed at cancer prevention and wellness, thanks to a $1.1 million federal grant just for firefighters. The hope is that in the future, Omaha will support ongoing wellness efforts for this group with an exponentially higher rate of cancer and cardiac health issues. "It's hard to tell the next generation of firefighters, come to our job. It's a great job. It's a rewarding job. But you can get sick from it. You can die from it," said Trevor Towey, President of Fire Union Local 385. Those taking part in the assessment are pleased they're surrounded by so many others. "It's difficult to get nine out of ten firefighters to do anything, so getting 90% is remarkable," said Omaha firefighter and paramedic Lowell Ferguson. KETV ABC 7 OMAHA Pennies help boost fire, police services in two California cities Most people don't view pennies per se as being valuable. But in Manteca and Lathrop pennies have shored up public safety. Measure C — a one cent sales tax on top of the basic one cent local sales tax Lathrop voters imposed in 2012 — last year generated $10.4 million for the city of 32,500. It includes $4 million sent to the Lathrop Manteca Fire District enabling the hiring of nine firefighters, 1.98 battalion chiefs, and a deputy fire marshal. The Lathrop tax also funds 7.5 police officers in addition to various park and community crime prevention upgrades. Measure M — a half cent sales tax on top of the basic one cent sales tax Manteca voters imposed in 2006 — last year generated $10.292 million for the city of 90,000. Unlike the Lathrop tax measure that that was twice the size of Manteca's, Measure M is restricted to public safety expenditures. MANTECA BULLETIN Florida governor signs law creating new penalties for exposing first responders to fentanyl Drug users and dealers who recklessly expose first responders to fentanyl and cause them to overdose will now face additional penalties thanks to a new law signed by Governor Ron DeSantis Monday. Body camera footage from August of last year, captured a Flagler County Sheriff's Deputy suffering a suspected fentanyl overdose after handling narcotics that later tested positive for the substance. The incident is one of a growing number of incidents where first responders have exhibited signs of overdose after coming in contact with fentanyl, oftentimes resulting in the use of Narcan to reverse the symptoms. "When law enforcement personnel are responding to these situations that fentanyl may be involved in, you know they really are putting themselves at risk," said Governor Ron DeSantis during a Monday press conference.
