Firefighters rescue man and dog trapped in burning north Austin apartment building Firefighters with Travis County Emergency Services District No. 2 rescued a man and his dog that were trapped on the third floor during a fire at a Wells Branch apartment building early Tuesday morning. When crews arrived, they found heavy smoke coming from the third floor and the roof. After the rescue, the man was evaluated and refused transport to the hospital. The fire left 24 units damaged, six units with direct damage and 12 without power. ESD No. 2 said the cause of the fire is being investigated by the Fire Marshal. "We are happy to report there were no casualties from the fire that took place at the Churchill Crossing Apartments last night," Nick Perkins, Fire Chief for ESD. No 2, said. "With the quick actions of firefighters, help from law enforcement, we successfully evacuated all tenants and their four-legged friends quickly from the building." KEYE-TV CBS 42 AUSTIN Fire deaths in San Antonio surpass 2021 total in matter of months San Antonio firefighters responded to another deadly fire on Monday morning — the 11th of the year in just over four months, according to fire department officials. SAFD officials said that number has already surpassed last year's total of ten fire-related deaths in San Antonio. Monday morning's fire broke out in a vacant building the 4300 block of South Flores Street. Firefighters battled heavy flames and smoke in the back of a building and found a man dead on the floor next to a wheelchair. "Once the fire was knocked down to a certain degree and we were able to go back in, that's when we found one person deceased," said SAFD spokesman Woody Woodward. The man's identity had not been released as of Monday afternoon, but Woodward said an investigation into the fire continues. He added that officials are making efforts to get the word out to people about fire safety. KSAT-TV ABC 12 SAN ANTONIO Vacant house fire turns deadly after crews discover body inside, Houston Fire Department says An investigation into a deadly house fire is underway after the Houston Fire Department says they discovered a body after putting out the flames. The incident happened at about 1 a.m. Tuesday near in the 1100 block of W. 19th Street near The Heights. When fire crews arrived to the house, they assumed no one was inside. No power was connected to the house and firefighters say they had to force their way through a fence just to get to the property. Firefighters say the house showed heavy fire and that it was locked up tight with all doors secured and burglar bars. Once crews started their attack and got inside the property, they discovered a body in a bedroom. "It appears it could be a beggar or squatter inside," said HFD District Chief Kevin Carley. Houston Police and HFD arson investigators are on the scene to determine the identity of the deceased individual. KHOU-TV CBS 11 HOUSTON Texas City: Remembering those who died in the worst industrial disaster in US history VIDEO: This past weekend, the people of Texas City – a town of about 52,000 on the Houston ship channel – honored the memory of the hundreds who died there 75 years ago when explosions ripped through ships that were docked at the city's port. For communities that lined Galveston Bay and the ship channel, the years following World War II brought jobs and prosperity to the thousands of workers who benefitted from the rise of the petrochemical industry. A routine arrival of the French freighter Grand Camp at the docks in Texas City in mid-April 1947 to take on a heavy load of ammonium nitrate fertilizer went without notice. But as longshoremen loaded the ship, someone smelled smoke. A small fire had broken out deep inside the Grand Camp. The captain ordered that steam be used to smother the fire, which created brightly colored smoke that drew people to the dock to watch. On April 16, 1947, the unimaginable: A massive explosion. KVUE-TV ABC 24 AUSTIN Material caught on machinery sparked fire at San Antonio uniform company Firefighters say that a piece of material caught on machinery sparked a fire at a local uniform company overnight. It happened around 11:38 p.m. at Alsco Uniforms located in the 3300 block of East Commerce on the East side of San Antonio. When firefighters arrived at the location they found smoke but no flames. According to the San Antonio Fire Department Battalion Chief, a piece of linen became caught in some machinery on a conveyor belt, causing the material to pile up and then ignite, catching the linen on fire. First responders say that the fire was sufficient enough to set off the sprinkler system, which prevented a much larger fire from occurring. Crews worked quickly to shut off the water in the sprinkler room, but it did cause minor flood-like conditions inside the warehouse of the company. WOAI-TV NBC 4 SAN ANTONIO Austin-Travis County EMS medics share safety tips after busy weekend of wilderness and water emergencies The Easter holiday weekend was busy for Austin-Travis County EMS whose medics responded to multiple calls for wilderness and water rescues—including drownings, someone in distress on a hiking trail, and a snake bite. One of the biggest challenges medics can face at the beginning of a wilderness emergency is locating the person who needs help. That's why knowing exactly where you are or downloading an app that can help first responders find your precise location is important. "Make note of where you entered the trail, make note of trail markings, mile markers, things of that nature for sure," says Captain Darren Noak with Austin-Travis County EMS. Noak explains, first responders can use location pings from cell phones, but they aren't always accurate or precise. KEYE-TV CBS 42 AUSTIN PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

VIDEO: Two-alarm fire burning at Arizona recycling facility fills sky with smoke Large flames and plumes of smoke can be seen from Interstate 10 near the Valencia Road exit after a large commercial fire ignited in the area Monday afternoon. According to Rural Metro Fire Department, crews were dispatched to the 5900 block of South Belvedere Avenue near Benson Highway and Valencia Road in reference to a fire at the UCC Recycling facility. Officials say when the crews arrived at the scene, the facility was fully engulfed in flames. As large storage piles of paper recycling materials, windy conditions and low water pressure in the area hampered the responding crews efforts with combatting the blaze, the commercial fire was upgraded to a two-alarm fire. As such, crews with Tucson Fire Department were dispatched to the area to assist with the blaze. KVOA-TV NBC 4 TUCSON Dealing with staffing shortages, North Carolina police officers, firefighters will protest for higher pay VIDEO: Raleigh police officers and firefighters will come together Tuesday afternoon to amplify their call for better pay. Firefighters told WRAL News better pay will support the Raleigh Fire Department's work to retain employees and recruit for nearly 60 vacancies. The group of first responders plans to protest outside the municipal building at 228 West Hargett St. in downtown Raleigh between 12 p.m. and 3 p.m. There are currently 58 vacant firefighter positions within the Raleigh Fire Department, an increase of 450% in two years. Although Raleigh's living hourly wage is $17.33, a Raleigh firefighter starts their career at $13.42 per hour. The city's new proposed pay plan only increases firefighters' pay to $15.06. Firefighters want the City of Raleigh to raise the starting pay $18.20 per hour and adjust the entire pay scale accordingly. Their proposed rate is $2.30 higher than what the city is currently proposing. WRAL-TV NBC 5 RALEIGH Oklahoma City Bombing 27 years ago today PHOTOS: It's one of those pivotal news stories in our lives many can remember where they were when hearing the news. At the time, it was the nation's worst single act of domestic terrorism. It was years before the unimaginable tragedies of 9-11/September 11, 2001 occurred. The country was stunned that two Americans, anti-government extremists with white supremacist, extreme right-wing sympathies; Timothy McVeigh and Terry Nichols had conspired to commit the crime. The blast destroyed or damaged 324 other buildings within a 16-block radius, shattered glass in 258 nearby buildings, and destroyed or burned 86 cars, causing an estimated $652 million worth of damage. Local, state, federal, and worldwide agencies engaged in extensive rescue efforts in the wake of the bombing. KOAM-TV CBS 7 PITTSBURG Indiana firefighters help woman receiving double organ transplant on race to the hospital April is National Donate Life Month, raising awareness about the importance of organ donation. Just last week, the power of community helped a local woman awaiting a transplant get to the hospital to receive her new organs. Right in the middle of severe storms we had last Wednesday, an evening phone call put the O'Daniels family on the clock. Sara O'Daniels had been waiting for 6 1/2 months for a new kidney and a new liver. Now, it was time. "You never knew when the call was coming and they were right," Patrick O'Daniels said. "We didn't know it was coming!" But Sara's life-saving surgery was suddenly at odds with the weather and her watch. "On the phone they said, 'This is so-and-so from University Hospital. We're calling to say we have a pair of organs for you. We have a kidney and liver and you need to be here within an hour,'" Sara recalled. WTHR-TV NBC 13 INDIANAPOLIS Ohio firefighter keeps firehose out of landfills by repurposing into pet toys Michael Fearing has been a firefighter for more than 30 years. He said a typical fire hose lasts 10-15 years. They get pressure tested each year and if they fail; they have to be replaced. Over the years, Fearing has watched thousands of feet of used fire hose enter landfills. "I've probably disposed of miles and miles of hose. And it was always like, it's kind of heartbreaking," said Fearing, a lieutenant at the Concord Fire Department. "Why are we, you know, we're putting this into landfills and it cost taxpayers a lot of money to begin with and, of course, things wear out right? You can't get around that, but just always brainstorming like what can we use this for?" Being an advocate for the environment, he got creative. Instead of adding to the already full landfills, he works to keep material out. In 2019, he launched Hound Hose. He takes old firehoses and repurposes them into handmade dog and cat toys. He ships worldwide and is always looking for more wholesaler partnerships. SPECTRUM NEWS 1 PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
