Laredo City Council approves Heard as new fire chief Laredo City Council on Monday unanimously approved the city manager's appointment of Guillermo Heard as Laredo's new fire chief. Heard had been serving as the emergency medical services deputy fire chief since 2018 and has been with the department for 20 years. A few council members and the mayor praised City Manager Robert Eads for not buckling under political pressure in his choice. Mayor Pete Saenz and Councilman George Altgelt argued that people perceive Laredo as having a fire political action committee first and a fire department second. Saenz said he expects performance and good behavior from Heard. "I'm glad to see the politics is to some degree coming down, and I expect to see more of that," the mayor said. This position became vacant in May when then-Fire Chief Steve Landin announced his retirement. In the interim, Ramiro Elizondo has acted as fire chief and emergency management coordinator. KBMT-TV ABC/NBC 12 BEAUMONT 'Time's not on our side' Houston Fire Department family hopes for experimental COVID drug HFD veteran Tommy Searcy's condition is worsening inside an ICU room at Memorial Hermann Hospital in The Woodlands. Now his medical team may be running out of options. The fire union tells ABC13 a ventilator is helping Searcy breathe while an ECMO machine scrubs his blood. "It doesn't appear to be positive news," union president Marty Lancton said, "The word we're getting from his brother, Tony is that doctors are becoming worried, and that's never a good thing when someone is battling this virus." Last week when he was moved to the ICU, the union asked for prayers for Searcy in a social media post. Tonight, they are asking for more. Searcy's family, doctors and union leaders are all hoping for approval to use an experimental drug that has shown promise helping relieve COVID-19 symptoms in patients lungs and air sacs. CROSSTIMBERSGAZETTE.COM With firefighters at an increased risk of cancer, Mesquite invests in new protective gear Every firefighter in Mesquite now has two sets of bunker gear, completing a safety program the city started two years ago. The new gear — the personal protective clothing that firefighters have often traditionally kept by their respective bunks at the fire station — can help the long-term health of firefighters, who are at increased risk of being diagnosed with certain types of cancer when compared to the average American, according to the National Fire Protection Association. Now, a firefighter can use one set of bunker gear while the other is being washed. "The protection of our firefighters is essential," Mesquite Fire Chief Mark Kerby said in a news release. "They must know that they have the best possible equipment and training available to perform their job." Chicago fire academy closed due to COVID-19 outbreak, department says The Chicago fire academy is closed until further notice after an apparent COVID-19 outbreak impacting both students and instructors. Officials said they are working to determine the source of the outbreak at the Robert J. Quinn Fire Academy, located at 558 W. De Koven Street in the South Loop. It's not clear how long the building will be shut down. Officials have not said exactly how many people tested positive for COVID-19, but there are multiple cases. Those individuals are now in isolation and none require hospitalization. For now, the other trainees will participate in remote instruction. Fire officials said the facility where Chicago firefighters are trained will undergo a deep cleaning. A representative from a janitorial service was seen arriving at the fire academy Monday afternoon, apparently to do a site survey. WABC-TV ABC 7 NEW YORK Fireboats hit the water to help with major fish kill in South Florida waters Another day of dead marine life surfacing in Biscayne Bay as the swath of suffocated fish appears to be spreading. On Saturday, members of Miami-Dade Fire Rescue went out on the water to help the animals breathe. The effort was coordinated by Miami Waterkeeper after reaching out to Port Miami for use of their fireboats. Two fireboats were deployed into Biscayne Bay to the most critical areas showing dangerously low oxygen levels, which has killed thousands of fish and other marine life over the past week. The mission for the crew of Fireboat 21, which welcomed Local 10 News' Louis Aguirre aboard Saturday, was to aerate the sections of the bay most in need, creating more oxygen in the water. "It's a big bay, a lot of gallons of water," said Fireboat 21 Capt. Jorge Gonzalez of Miami-Dade Fire Rescue. "We're only affecting a little bit. Luckily the fish kill has only been concentrated to a few spots and those are the areas we're hitting" WPLG-TV ABC 10 MIAMI No injuries reported after fire at Texas refinery VIDEO: No injuries were reported Tuesday after a fire damaged a tank at a Pasadena refinery. The fire was reported about 5:45 a.m. in an oil tank on the northeast corner of the property at Pasadena Refining Systems. According to Bill Stephens, a spokesman for Chevron, the fire was extinguished about 6:30 a.m. but fire crews are still working to cool down the tank. Stephens said air monitoring on the perimeter of the property has not detected any problems offsite. Officials said the Houston Ship Channel was briefly closed as a precaution since the tank is near the channel. The Washburn Tunnel and some streets surrounding the facility that have been closed are expected to reopen soon, Stephens said. CLICK 2 HOUSTON PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
