Residents say ground shook after huge explosion, massive fire at San Antonio Water System facility VIDEOS: A lightning strike may be to blame for a massive fire at a water facility late Monday night. Crews got reports of an explosion and a huge fire just after 9 p.m. at the San Antonio Water System (SAWS) facility off Hardy Road. Nearby residents said the explosion was so intense that it shook the ground. A huge fire could be seen inside the large fenced in area around the facility. The roadways leading up to the area were blocked off as both Bexar County Fire and San Antonio Fire Department worked to put the fire out. The fire could be seen for miles. We're learning that a lightning strike may have struck the location near some large tanks that contained flammable liquids. No injuries were reported. Water service was not affected, but some nearby residents did lose power. KABB-TV FOX 29 SAN ANTONIO Emergency crews make hundreds of water rescues amid north Texas flooding: 'I thought I was going to die' Emergency crews rescued families with children in heavily flooded Seagoville, Texas, on Monday, while heavy rains and flash flooding submerged houses, cars and trapped drivers in and around Dallas. A 60-year-old woman was killed when her vehicle was swept away in floodwaters in Dallas County, Texas, according to an official. One woman was pulled to safety after the road she was driving on flooded with little warning. "I thought I was going to die," the driver, Stephanie Carroll, said. "I was just panicking because I just wanted to get out of my car and get out of the water." Dallas Fire-Rescue Department responded to nearly 200 vehicle rescues in just 24 hours. Parts of the Southwest are under flood warnings after monsoon rains drenched communities across parts of six states, with northern Texas getting the worst of it. CBS NEWS 5 years later, Victoria frontline emergency workers learn from Hurricane Harvey A wind-driven fire in the middle of a monster hurricane sounds like an apocalyptic story. Fire. Wind. Whipping rain. All of this happened at once for Victoria firefighters five years ago during Hurricane Harvey. The Victoria Fire Department fought a residential fire for three hours on Aug. 25, 2017, while also battling sudden hurricane-force winds. Fire Chief Tracy Fox and other frontline responders explained the lessons they took from Harvey as well as how they are preparing to battle the next tropical monster, including hardening Fire Station No.1, adding generators and water wells to local hospitals. Firefighters would not normally, in most circumstances, go out to quell a fire in sustained winds over 45 mph, but as Hurricane Harvey was blowing into Victoria, it knocked down a weather tower, giving the department an incorrect reading on the wind speed. VICTORIA ADVOCATE - METERED SITE Rookie College Station Firefighter Performs A Water Rescue Of A Stranded Dog A rookie College Station firefighter volunteered to rescue a dog who was stranded on the island at the University Park dog park lake. CSFD captain Stuart Marrs said Apollo, a medium sized and friendly pit bull who is afraid of water, accidentally fell into the lake and swam the wrong way to the island. The firefighter attached his lead rope and made a makeshift muzzle as part of the rescue operation. The Engine from Station 6 was dispatched to a public assist at University Park Dog Park concerning a dog that was stranded on the island at the dog park lake. Upon arrival, CSFD made contact with the dog owner. The dog, a medium sized friendly pitbull was located on the island. The owners said the dog is afraid of water and does not swim. The dog accidentally fell into the water and struggled his way to the island. WTAW-AM 1620 COLLEGE STATION Update: Cause of fire at San Antonio motel may remain unknown, investigators say San Antonio fire investigators say they may not be able to locate the cause of a fire that resulted in heavy damage to one building of a South Side motel. Woody Woodward, a public information officer for SAFD, said investigators have determined the fire started outside, on the back of a building at the Rainbow Motel. However, he said due to the amount of damage, they labeled the cause as "undetermined." The fire broke out after 6:30 a.m. Monday in the 4700 block of S. Presa. "We did not actually have to evacuate anyone," Woodward said. "The small number of residents that were at this motel were already out in the parking lot." Flames already had broken through the roof when fire crews arrived. They had to break through shingles to reach some of the flames, which were hidden between layers of the roof. KSAT-TV ABC 12 SAN ANTONIO Heavy fire damages southeast Houston home where man was found shot last week A house badly damaged by heavy flames in southeast Houston is the same house where a shooting happened last week, fire officials said. Houston firefighters said there was no one around when they arrived at the home in the 4700 block of Wilmington Street near Coffee Street just before 2 a.m. Tuesday. A passer-by reportedly saw the flames and called 911. There was no one inside the home during the fire, HFD said. It's unclear if the house is vacant or if it was just unoccupied at the time. Officials said the utilities were still connected. The cause of the fire is under investigation by HFD Arson. A man was found shot twice in the same house just before 3:30 a.m. on Friday. Authorities said the victim was taken to a hospital and is expected to be OK. The victim told police he was inside the house when someone outside began firing shots. Firefighters rushed to put out a house fire in the 500 block of Westwood Street just as Harvey amped up, Fox said. VICTORIA ADVOCATE - METERED SITE How a Massachusetts firefighter invented an industry standard for fire vehicles VIDEO: Inside a 25,000-square-foot manufacturing facility, a Massachusetts company makes special tanks used by fire departments all over the world. United Plastics Fabricating, in North Andover, building custom tanks that are designed to hold water inside a firefighting apparatus. "I think that's what's sort of exciting, is that you're doing something that can save lives. That's really important," said UPF president Andrew Lingel, the son of one of the company's founders. Back in 1986, Joe Lingel started the company after serving as a firefighter in Lynnfield. He was inspired by an experience with one of the town's pumper trucks having a rusted tank. That's when Joe Lingel and co-founder Allan Burnham fabricated a replacement tank made from plastic instead of steel. WCVB-TV ABC 5 BOSTON Renovated Fire Station In Florida To Serve As Medical Emergency Rescue Station VIDEO/PHOTOS: Firefighters with Tampa Fire Rescue are settling into their new digs while Sulfphur Springs and surrounding residents enjoy some added peace of mind with the opening of Fire Station 45, an exclusive "rescue station." In September, the Tampa City Council approved around $3.4 million to renovate Fire Station 25 and add four additional personnel and two new rescue units. Fire Station 25 will operate solely as a rescue station, which means trained firefighter-paramedics assigned there will respond to medical calls and other emergencies. These rescue units are especially critical for this area where 90 percent of the calls are for emergency medical services. Tampa Mayor Jane Castor said the new rescue station will play a pivotal role in easing the burden on nearby fire stations. TAMPA PATCH Iowa woman gifts retired fire captain father quilt full of fire department shirts with help from TikTok VIDEO: An Indianola woman gave her father a dream gift for his birthday. Alli Marois put out a call on TikTok earlier this year for fire department shirts from all 50 states - and she got a response of more than 170 shirts. Marois and her mother designed a quilt with all of the shirts. They even found a quilt maker in Pleasant Hill to do it for free, just in time for Marois' father's birthday this past Saturday. Her father, a retired Des Moines fire captain, is flattered by the thoughtful gift. "It was very heartfelt because I know all the work that went through to get it to me," said Phil Collins, Alli's father. "And I wasn't real surprised of how many shirts they ended up with because across the nation, when a firefighter or someone wants something, they just respond." Alli said she even got some shirts from out of the country, like Iraq and Afghanistan. They came from firefighters who served overseas. KCCI-TV CBS 8 DES MOINES PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
