Fire destroys apartments under construction in Fate VIDEO/PHOTOS: Fire destroyed apartments that were under construction in Rockwall County Tuesday morning. Six multi-level units caught fire near the southwest corner of Interstate 30 and FM 551 in Fate around 5:30 a.m. The flames could be seen from miles away and quickly consumed the partially complete structures. At least one building collapsed. Firefighters from several cities took a defensive position and used water cannons to try to protect nearby homes and businesses, including the FRESH by Brookshire's grocery store. "We tried standing by that fence over there but the heat was so unbearable we couldn't stand close to it," said Duane Drost, who lives nearby. "We had embers flying. We tried to keep the grass wet, back of the house covered to make sure our houses didn't catch fire." KDFW-TV FOX 4 DALLAS Wearing two hats: Liberty County fire marshal to serve dual role as emergency management coordinator Liberty County Fire Marshal Bill Hergemueller just got a lot busier. On Monday, during a Commissioners Court workshop, commissioners gave their informal approval to Hergemueller also serving as the coordinator for the Liberty County Office of Emergency Management. Commissioners will formally vote on it at a special meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 6. "It's nothing I haven't done before. I don't know all of the systems and procedures used by the OEM yet but I didn't know them all when I walked into the fire marshal's office. We developed and put together a pretty comprehensive program, and I expect to do the same for the OEM," Hergemueller said. Hergemueller believes his 30 years of experience as a firefighter, several years as fire chief for HWY 321 VFD and his degree as an engineer will help him as he steps into this new dual role as fire marshal and OEM coordinator. BLUEBONNET NEWS Gunman opens fire on first responders in northwest Harris County, deputies say An investigation is underway after a gunman opened fire on paramedics in northwest Harris County, according to the Harris County Sheriff's Office. The shooting happened along Spring Cypress Road and Glenn Haven Estates in the Klein area just before 4 a.m Tuesday. Deputies said the man's car broke down in the middle of the road and he called deputies for help. Paramedics from Emergency Service District 11 saw the man on the side of the road and were prepared to help when the man started shooting at their ambulance. No paramedics were injured in the shooting and deputies believe the man may have been having some kind of mental breakdown. Deputies also said his car may not even have been broken down. He was arrested and taken to the hospital to be evaluated. Meanwhile, the roads have opened back up and traffic has resumed normally. KHOU-TV CBS 11 HOUSTON University of Texas psychology department helps improve morale among Austin firefighters Firefighters work long shifts, away from home, helping keep the community safe. It's a tough job, but when morale is low, it makes it even harder. "Our department faced some issues with our staffing," said Ken Bailey, Travis County Fire Rescue chief. "It was about the group dynamics and how we were dealing with our employees." That's when Chief Bailey reached out to the Psychology Research Lab at the University of Texas at Austin. "They gave us a sense of direction that gave us a sense of weight to the problems we were facing," said Bailey. Alissa Mrazek, a UT Psychology department research assistant, sat down with Bailey to find out what was happening and what needed to change. "One of the biggest ones was a lack of trust among crews," said Mrazek. KVUE-TV ABC 24 AUSTIN 1 killed in train derailment in El Paso One person was killed in a train derailment in El Paso, Texas, late Monday night, officials said. Two train cars derailed, damaging a backyard shed, a fence and a gas meter, leading to the evacuation of about 50 people from nearby homes, according to the El Paso Fire Department. The damaged gas line was shut down and the evacuation has been lifted, the fire department said. No other injuries were reported, the department added. KVIA-TV ABC/CW+ 7 EL PASO Mustangs, veterans and first responders healing together in Sherman At the Divine Equine Therapeutic Riding Center, first responders, veterans — and even mustangs who've struggled with a traumatic life experience — can have a chance to heal. "It's helped me a lot with of the issues, from my time in and with PTSD," said veteran Stacey Macke. "It helps me to stay grounded." Mustangs and warhorses get veterans and first responders dealing with trauma on horseback. "Being outdoors, being with the equine, it allows them the opportunity to process any of their traumas," said Candace Ray, a counselor and executive director of Evanescent Mustang Rescue and Sanctuary. This program not only helps veterans and first responders to heal, the experience also helps rescued mustangs battle their past. "That's why this pen is so important," said Nell Ward, executive director of Divine Equine Therapeutic Riding Center. KTEN-TV NBC/CW+/ABC 10 ADA PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

KDFW-TV FOX 4 DALLAS Indiana firefighters show artistic talents with unique American flags VIDEO: Two Fishers firefighters have discovered a way to honor America and their fellow first responders, while also showing off their artistic side and making a little extra money on the side. Firefighters Scott Carr and Rob Demlow are making American flags completely out of old firehoses. "Fire departments around [the country], when a section of [fire]hose goes bad, whether it's in a fire or during training, they're just taking them off the truck and throwing them away," Carr said. "We had some hose lying around the firehouse getting ready to go in the dumpster. 'What if we can do something with this firehose to make a piece of artwork symbolizing the flag?'" The end result was a beautiful, unique piece of art. "When we started this, it started as a fun hobby and blossomed into this business that's starting to take off and do well," Carr said, with neither firefighter having any form of artistic background. WTHR-TV NBC 13 INDIANAPOLIS Suspect steals ambulance in San Francisco, tries to run down 2 paramedics, authorities say Two paramedics with the San Francisco Fire Department had their ambulance attacked by a man they claim randomly approached them. As of now, SFFD does not know of any motive behind this attack. "From what it sounds like this was just random," said Tim Finch, one of the directors with San Francisco Fire Union 798. "I haven't actually spoken to the crew directly yet but this was unprovoked and out of the blue." The uniformed paramedics were in the fire department ambulance in the 1700 block of Harrison Street in the city's Mission District at about 7 a.m. when they were attacked, according to police and the firefighters union. The suspect shattered the ambulance windows with a wooden stake, prompting the medics to get out for their own safety, said Danny Gracia, president of San Francisco Firefighters Local 798. KGO-TV ABC 7 SAN FRANCISCO Kentucky fire department joins Neighbors app linking doorbell cameras to law enforcement nationwide Plenty of people have Ring or other security cameras installed at their home. Now, fire and police departments in Kentucky and Indiana are using that to their advantage. Ring's Neighbors app is something anybody can use, whether they have a Ring camera or not. It's a way for people to look out for each other and a way for police and fire departments to connect directly with the public. Anytime an agency joins the app or requests assistance, a notification is sent to users in their jurisdiction. Louisville Metro Fire's Arson Bureau joined the Neighbors app two weeks ago, and Arson Chief Maj. Kevin Fletcher said they have already used it to ask for help with an investigation. WDRB-TV FOX 41 LOUISVILLE August 29: A day in history that forever changed Louisiana's geography and residents' lives in 2005, 2012, and 2021 August 29 will forever be a day that Louisiana residents will remember. Three hurricanes have made landfall on this day. Those three storms severely altered Louisiana's geography and lives, Lt. Gov. Billy Nungesser said reflecting on the anniversary of Hurricanes Katrina, Isaac, and Ida. Most remember exactly where they were, what they were doing, and how it felt to ride out one or all of these hurricanes. Hurricane Katrina blew through Louisiana 17 years ago today. Then in 2012, on the night of August 28 and early hours of August 29, Hurricane Isaac made landfall. One year ago on this day, Louisiana was in the midst of yet another deadly, dangerous disaster; Hurricane Ida, probably the most vivid memories still in everyone's minds. For many Louisiana residents, Aug. 29 is and will be an emotional day as they mark the anniversary of when several storms hit the area.
