82-Year-Old Woman Dies in Fort Worth House Fire An 82-year-old woman has died after being pulled from her burning Fort Worth home Monday night, authorities say. Fort Worth firefighters were called about 7 p.m. to the house in the 500 block of West Felix Street. While crews began to extinguish the flames, they learned a person was trapped in the rear of the home, according to a Facebook post by the Fort Worth Fire Department. Crews quickly searched the home and found a woman, later identified by medical examiner records as Lily Beck. She was transported to a nearby hospital where she died, records showed. No other injuries were reported. KXAS-TV NBC 5 DALLAS - FORT WORTH Arbitration Panel Hears First Arguments on Labor Contract Between San Antonio, Firefighters City of San Antonio and union representatives crowded into a small conference room Monday for the first of roughly a dozen arbitration sessions that will result in the formation of a new labor contract between the City and its firefighters. A three-member panel of arbitrators will spend the next few weeks listening to testimony from experts on both sides before deciding on the final, binding contract. The panel is made up of local attorney Phil Pfeiffer, who was selected by the City; Portland, Oregon, labor attorney Michael Tedesco, picked by the San Antonio Professional Firefighters Association; and retired Judge John J. Specia Jr., whom Pfeiffer and Tedesco selected. Monday's proceeding took place at Specia's office off Northwest Loop 410. THE RIVARD REPORT City of Glenn Heights Promotes Fire and Police Chiefs When former Director of Public Safety Eddie Burns resigned recently it opened both the police and fire chief positions in Glenn Heights. Burns had been in the position several years and decided to leave in order to spend more time with family. The city decided to eliminate the Director of Public Safety position for this fiscal year. Deputy Police Chief Vernell Dooly and Deputy Fire Chief Keith Moore stepped up. Dooley had been the deputy chief of police in Glenn Heights since July 2017. Prior to serving in that capacity, he worked for the Denton Police Department and served in various functions including patrol sergeant, director of training and the interim assistant to the city manager. Moore began his career in Glenn Heights in 1998 as a volunteer firefighter. He was one of the first of six full-time firefighters hired in the city's history in 2000. Since then, Moore has been promoted through the ranks before being promoted to fire chief. FOCUS DAILY NEWS Midland Fire Department: Ambulance fleet to set another record The Midland Fire Department's ambulance fleet set a record run volume in 2018 with 18,000, according to the city of Midland. The department is on pace to exceed that record run volume this year with an estimated 19,000, according to Fire Chief Charles Blumenauer. "With the rise in population there has been a significant increase in run volume," Blumenauer wrote in a memorandum that was part of the Nov. 19 Midland City Council agenda packet. "This volume has led to extreme wear and tear on our EMS units." The City Council approved last month spending more than $1.883 million to purchase six ambulances. Blumenauer wrote that the new units will replace the city's oldest units, which have the most maintenance costs, and an ambulance involved in an accident. MIDLAND REPORTER-TELEGRAM City of Melissa expanding lock box program for emergency entry to homes When fire and paramedics answer 911 calls, it's often someone who's fallen and can't get up. Doors have to be broken through to get badly-needed medical attention. The Melissa Fire Department is now unlocking a new program that will keep them from destroying doors while trying to save lives. The Knox Box, which securely holds a key for access, is nothing new to businesses. All fire departments require them. But the Melissa Fire Department is the first in North Texas to offer the box program for free to the front porch of residents. It's called the Residential Knox Box program. A Knox Lock Box goes on the front of homes of people who've opted into the program. "Each captain has their own individual pin which will unlock this electronic key secure," explained Melissa Fire Capt. Jake Leonard. KDFW-TV FOX 4 Dallas Firefighter Recognized for Saving Woman Who Was Set on Fire by Ex-Boyfriend A Dallas firefighter was recognized this week for his life-saving actions in rescuing a woman who was set on fire by her ex-boyfriend. Firefighter Peter "Pete" Hartnett was recognized this week by Dallas Fire-Rescue for extinguishing the flames and saving Danyeil Townzen's life, according to our partners KRLD. "For Pete to put off his new fireman's jacket, turn it inside out like an angel and smothering my flames was like putting his wings around me," Danyeil Townzen told KRLD. "If it wasn't for him, I wouldn't be here today." In May 2018, Hartnett responded to an aggravated assault call when he found the woman, who was doused in kerosene and covered in flames, Dallas Fire-Rescue officials said. Her ex-boyfriend set her on fire with a blow torch following an argument, KRLD reported. KXAS-TV NBC 5 DALLAS - FORT WORTH PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

Massachusetts: 20 Years After Cold Storage Fire, Residents Recall The Fallen Worcester Six A crowd of people lined up on one end of Worcester's Union Station one recent Sunday morning. They were there to see a special exhibit commemorating the Worcester Six. "I guess 20 years is the time to break all this stuff out again and show the people. And the people still support us," said Angelo Bongovio, a Worcester firefighter from 1983 to 2011. "We'll never forget these guys." Bongovio was on duty at the Worcester Historical Fire Society's exhibit to greet visitors and answer their questions. The room is filled with posters made by school kids thanking the department, patches and caps sent in from firefighters around the country, and memorabilia salvaged from the burnt ruins of the Worcester Cold Storage & Warehouse Co. building. WBUR 90.9 FM An Inside Look at Dallas Fire-Rescue's Behavioral Health Program In the Fall of 2017, a member of the Dallas Fire-Rescue Department (DFR) died by suicide. Earlier that year, the firefighter had been arrested for driving under the influence (DUI) and as a result faced disciplinary action. When the department learned of a second alcohol-related issue later the same year, and pending the outcome of the investigation, additional disciplinary action led to the firefighter being placed on administrative leave. Upon learning that he was being placed on leave and being sent home, the firefighter assumed he would be fired. After leaving the station, he went home, sent a text to his family and shot himself. The firefighter had several events occurring in his life simultaneously that if shared with his DFR family might have raised enough flags that would have been identified as warning signs. FIREHOUSE Attorney gives legal opinion on New York county 'annoyance bill' Community groups threatened demonstrations and legal action against a newly signed controversial Monroe County law to protect emergency responders from threats and harassment. "We will certainly challenge it in court," Rev. Lewis Stewart, president of the United Christian Leadership Ministry, said. "That's a fact. That's a promise." The Monroe County Legislature approved the law in October and County Executive Cheryl Dinolfo signed the law Monday evening following a public hearing at the legislature. That hearing drew angry comments inside the legislative chambers and loud protest outside on Main Street. "It is unconstitutional," Stewart said. "It is racist. It tramples on the first amendment." "This is a stupid, unconstitutional political stunt," Bill Destler, former president of R.I.T. said. WHEC-TV NBC 10 ROCHESTER Agencies in Illinois county seek ‘more bang for our buck' through consolidation of 911 services Emergency dispatch centers in Lake County are studying ways to consolidate or share the same equipment, personnel and policies to provide better service and increase efficiencies for residents and visitors. Since 2013, Lake County, through the Lake County Emergency Telephone System Board, has studied whether consolidating more than a dozen independent primary and secondary Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) or dispatch centers in Lake County could enhance 911 service, according to Jim Hawkins, a deputy county administrator who also serves as 911 consolidation planning project manager. New legislation in 2015 forced consolidation of smaller systems, and at the time, a study by the task force found that there were 19 dispatch centers employing 280 full-time equivalent positions at a cost of $33 million per year. CHICAGO TRIBUNE - METERED SITE Judge: Kansas city cannot unilaterally withdraw from fire district The city of Lansing cannot unilaterally withdraw from Leavenworth County Fire District No. 1 by terminating an interlocal agreement. That is according to a ruling issued last week by Leavenworth County District Judge David King. The judge also ruled that a termination of an interlocal agreement cannot be used to require the apportionment of all of a fire district's property. The decision came in a case that concerned a 2003 interlocal agreement that helped establish Fire District No. 1. The fire district provides fire department services to the city of Lansing and Delaware and High Prairie townships. The 2003 agreement was signed by representatives of Lansing and the two township as well as a representative of the Leavenworth County Commission and an assistant attorney general for the state of Kansas.
