Harlingen CISD opens first-of-its-kind fire simulator VIDEO: Harlingen is now home to a first-of-its-kind fire simulator. It is able to give future and current firefighters some realistic training. "We get live training hands on, I learn more hands on," Harlingen High School senior James Salazar said. Salazar is a senior at Harlingen High School, and he already has plans to become a firefighter after he graduates. "I always wanted to be one when I was four, it's really fun, I want to save people," Salazar said. When Salazar graduates in the spring, he will have his firefighter certification. He is looking forward to some hands-on training that is now available for students in the Harlingen Consolidated Independent School District Fire Academy. "Prior to that, our firefighters and the school district, the students in the fire academy, had to travel to Edinburg, so to be able to do that here," Mayor of Harlingen Norma Sepulveda said. Garland Department of Defense Fire Academy, Dec. 8 - 9. "We train out here because we don't have the capabilities quite like Goodfellow to get certified in ARFF," said San Angelo Fire Department Firefighter, Casey Scruggs. "I feel very blessed, there's some departments that are not as fortunate as us. This mutual agreement between Goodfellow and San Angelo has been a blessing." Extending a welcoming hand to the local community fosters a distinctive advantage for the future. "The importance behind this training is building community relations," said Tech. Sgt. Donald Marfisi, 312th TRS ARFF instructor supervisor. NORTH TEXAS E-NEWS Fire rages through downtown El Paso building A condition 4 fire was raging in a Downtown building Monday morning as firefighters from across the city work to put out the blaze. Smoke was visible throughout the city and blanketed the Downtown and South El Paso area. It started around 8:30 a.m. in the 300 block of S. El Paso Street near Overland. Initially coming from an alleyway crews discovered it coming from a shoe store in that shopping area. As the smoke continued to grow 18 fire units were called along with 50 firefighters to put out the flames. One vendor, Premier Uniforms, is just a few doors down from where the fire took place. The owner, Hector Ayala, was in his office just minutes before the fire crews arrived. He said this not only affects his business right before the holiday's but his employees as well. KTSM-TV NBC 9 EL PASO What happens when you call 911: An inside look at the Bexar Metro Emergency Communication Center in San Antonio VIDEO: Three numbers you hope to never need: 911. However, at that moment when you do, you're not likely thinking about where that call is being answered or by whom. There is a Bexar Metro Emergency Communication Center in far north San Antonio, though the organization doesn't like to advertise the exact location for safety purposes. Inside what looks similar to a NASA mission control center (think a huge, dark room with massive TV screens, dozens of computer monitors and people wearing headsets), there are call-takers for the Bexar County Sheriff's Office and the San Antonio Police Department. "People's lives initially depend on what we do here," said Jennifer Rodriguez, who has been an SAPD communications call taker for 5 years. KSAT-TV ABC 12 SAN ANTONIO PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

VIDEO: Multi-alarm fire at New Jersey commercial building burns through the night Firefighters spent hours in freezing temperatures battling a fire at a commercial building in Linden. The blaze broke out around 12:30 a.m. Tuesday and eventually went to three alarms. It was still burning more than 6 hours later. Video from NewsCopter 7 showed heavy smoke and flames shooting through the roof of the facility before dawn. The one-story building near the intersection of East Elizabeth and North Park avenues houses World Class Kitchens, a food preparation company. Fire officials say the blaze started in a kitchen area. Eyewitness News is told the building was occupied when the fire started. One worker was treated for smoke inhalation and taken to an area hospital. WABC-TV ABC 7 NEW YORK CITY Inside the New $12.4 Million Fire Station at an Alabama Airport A new Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF) station and new ARFF trucks were unveiled last week at Birmingham-Shuttlesworth (BHM) International Airport. At a ribbon-cutting, Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin joined board members of the Birmingham Airport Authority, project contractors, architects, Birmingham Fire and Rescue, and the airport staff to celebrate the completion of this major project. Similar to other fire stations in Birmingham and across the U.S., the ARFF station is home base for the men and women who will respond to emergencies. BIRMINGHAM TIMES Florida warehouse fire that killed 4 prompts questions over fireworks storage VIDEO: Orange County leaders are questioning safety issues surrounding a deadly warehouse fire that ignited fireworks stored at the property. The fire – which happened on Dec. 1 – could come up on Tuesday at the county commission meeting. There are legal questions over whether the company was even allowed to store fireworks there. A county commissioner is saying officials didn't even know fireworks were inside the building. The warehouse where this happened is located on Central Florida Parkway in Taft. District 3 commissioner Mayra Uribe's office says she's working closely with a team made up of staff from planning and zoning and the State Fire Marshals Office to find out why no one was aware that Magic in the Sky – which provides professional special effects fireworks – was storing fireworks inside. WOFL-TV FOX 35 ORLANDO ‘We Lost Another Giant': Retired Fire Chief From Long Island Dies From 9/11-Tied Illness At 80 Brian O'Flaherty was just yards away from the World Trade Center, working at the New York City Fire Department's command post inside the Marriott Hotel, when the South Tower collapsed on Sept. 11, 2001, killing hundreds and leaving him seriously injured. More than two decades later, the retired battalion chief and US Navy veteran from Rockville Centre died Saturday, Dec. 3, at the age of 80, his obituary said. O'Flaherty's death stemmed from illness contracted from the toxic exposure at Ground Zero, according to the 9/11 Rescue Workers & Friends Forum (RWFF) Facebook page. Born and raised in Queens, O'Flaherty graduated from Martin Van Buren High School before enlisting in the Navy, where he worked on submarines, his memorial said. The boat also features thermal imaging cameras for night rescues. It can flow 4,000 gallons of water per minute on one motor or 7,000 gallons if it is docked or anchored. It also has a 100-gallon foam tank to help fight tougher fires.
