Dead hydrant, faulty line create challenge while putting out San Antonio house fire, fire officials say San Antonio firefighters were able to overcome a handful of challenges while dealing with a South Side house fire early Tuesday morning. The fire was called in around 1:30 a.m. at a home in the 700 block of West Harlan Avenue, not far from Interstate 35 and East Southcross. Firefighters said when they arrived, they found flames showing on the left side of the home along with underneath the house and in the attic. Fire officials said they were able to put out the fire, even with a few challenges. Firefighters encountered a dead fire hydrant and then the line they were using had a hole in it, so they had to use a different line, authorities said. A family of six lives inside the home and they all made it safely out. They will now be staying with relatives for the time being, firefirefighters said. Investigators have been called to help determine the exact cause of the fire. KSAT-TV ABC 12 SAN ANTONIO Be Remarkable: Longtime College Station Fire Department citizen volunteer is retiring It could be day or night. If College Station firefighters responded to a fire, you could bet Bobby Maggard was there with them as a member of the department's CART and REHAB teams. "If there's a fire at 3 o'clock in the morning, this guy is going to be there handing out towels or water or anything else is needed," said CSFD Captain Jason Giles. "The firemen needed a little help too, so I started carrying ice, water, and Gatorade, and things like that," said Maggard, who has volunteered to help the first responders for nearly two decades. And every morning at 5:15 a.m., Maggard is at Fire Station #5, taking care of most of the daily duties. "He starts the coffee, unloads the dishwasher, takes out the trash, and then goes out to pick up the newspaper that gets delivered around 6:15," said Cpt. Giles. KBTX-TV 3 BRYAN San Antonio Fire Department suspects homeless people started fire at abandoned North Side home The city's homeless population is suspected of starting a fire at an abandoned home on the city's North Side, according to the San Antonio Fire Department. The fire happened around 1 a.m. at a home in the 200 block of Cliffwood Drive, not far from West Avenue and Interstate 10. Firefighters said when they arrived, the boarded up home had flames on the right side of the house. The home was boarded except for a door in the back where some homeless people had broken into, fire officials said. The fire spread throughout the attic of the home. Firefighters were able to put out the fire, but the next-door neighbor's boat was burnt by the flames, firefighters said. Damage to the home is estimated at $70,000 to $80,000. Fire investigators are now working to determine the exact cause of the fire. Over 100 firefighters were battling the fire in the community north of downtown Los Angeles. Crews responded to the 1000 block of N. San Fernando Road at about 4 a.m. and reported fire coming out of the roof of the one-story building with dense interior storage, said Brian Humphrey with the Los Angeles Fire Department. KNBC-TV NBC 4 LOS ANGELES Connecticut firefighters rescue 2 from sinking truck in icy water during storm VIDEO: Dramatic video shows first responders rescue two people from a vehicle submerged into Long Island Sound during the nor'easter on Monday afternoon. Two people were in the pickup truck when it went 35 feet out into the water. Only the bed of the truck was sticking out. A woman in the truck got out through the rear window and was able to get onto the bed of the truck and out of the water, but a man in the truck was stuck. Firefighters stretched their tower ladder to its full capacity in order to reach the vehicle. Officials said as soon as a firefighter was able to grab the man through the window, the truck went fully under water. The man was taken to the hospital conscious but had some lacerations. The woman declined medical care at the scene. Stamford Fire Department Captain Palmer said he was especially proud of his team. WABC-TV ABC 7 NEW YORK Arizona fire station one of first in US geared toward cancer prevention The Goodyear Fire Department is one of the first fire departments in the country to take a major step toward preventing firefighters from getting cancer from the important work they do. Goodyear opened up Station 186 near Willis and Rainbow Valley roads in early January. The station is one of three that will be built with special air partitioning systems to keep carcinogens away from firefighters in between calls. More and more building materials and household items are made with plastic, and when plastic burns, the smoke it puts off can contain cancer-causing substances that are then inhaled by firefighters. The CDC reports that firefighters have an increased risk of cancer diagnosis and death as a result of smoke inhalation. There isn't much firefighters can do about inhaling smoke when they are putting out a fire, but in the living quarters of a station, there is an opportunity to keep firefighters away from fumes as they eat, sleep and wait for the next call. KPNX-TV NBC 12 PHOENIX Suffering in silence: How a bill in Alabama could help first responders suffering from PTSD With the Alabama state legislative session starting on Feb. 2, a bill has already been proposed to give more help towards first responders suffering from posttraumatic stress disorder. When people hear the term PTSD, most do not think about firefighters, police officers, or other safety staff. According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, 30 percent of first responders are expected to develop some type of behavioral condition. "You know the fire service as a whole, and even here in the Dothan Fire Department, responds to a lot of traumatic situations," Dothan Fire Deputy Chief Chris Etheredge said. "Whether that be a medical response or a fire response or a car wreck. Those are very traumatic things that can happen and you have to put together that with what's going on in your life and how that affects each person individually."
