Three dead after house fire in Milam County Police and family members say that three people were killed in a house fire early Sunday morning in the 1800 block of FM 486 North in Thorndale. Officials say the call for the fire went out at 1:45 a.m. When Thorndale Volunteer Fire Department arrived on the scene, the house was fully involved. Thorndale VFD immediately requested assistance from Rockdale Volunteer Fire Department. According to the Milam County Sheriff's Department, the two fire departments battled the fire for over three hours. By sunrise, the fire had been fully extinguished. State Fire Marshals are currently investigating the cause of the fire. Milam County Sheriffs say they do not have a cause at this time but suspect it could be electrical in nature. KBTX-TV CBS 3 BRYAN Massive refinery fire in Corpus Christi draws attention on west side VIDEO: A massive fire caused by a gas pipeline burned for about 90 minutes Monday morning in an area near Interstate 37 and Buddy Lawrence Drive, causing disruption in the surrounding areas. Traffic on I-37 temporarily was closed until mid-morning. AEP reported a power outage at 8:38 a.m., affecting about 723 customers. CCISD Police Chief said Oak Park Elementary, Driscoll Middle School and Miller High School were told to shelter-in-place. The Corpus Christi Fire Department worked in tandem with the Refinery Terminal Fire Company, putting out the fire -- which began at around 8:37 a.m. -- within couple of hours, and the Corpus Christi Police Department issued a shelter-in-place order for the nearby neighborhoods and residents. "We were able to geo-code and hit all of the phones in that area and notify them that a shelter in place was being ordered for their protection," he said. Those pictures remind me it's not about me they paved the way, continue to pay it forward." He says there have been several career-defining moments but he'll never forget December 10th, 2018. "I didn't do any research to see what it would be like to be the first African American fire chief in Austin. It didn't really sink in until after I got the job." KTBC-TV FOX 7 AUSTIN Through the Fire: 37 days, 10 church fires in East Texas On January 1, 2010, members of Little Hope Baptist Church in Canton gathered on the lawn in front of the building, as the distinctive smell of smoke and water carried throughout the winter air. "The yard was full," Little Hope member JoNell Wilkerson said. "Most were crying, naturally, to see our church burning." As the members watched the building burn, a sense of hopelessness spread through the crowd like the fire spreading through the building. "We were fearful that we would lost the entire building," Wilkerson remembered. That same day, Faith Church in Athens was also set on fire. Less than two weeks later, on January 12, two more churches would erupt in flames: Lake Athens Baptist Church and Grace Community Church. KYTX-TV CBS 19 TYLER Man impaled by fence after hitting deer in Montgomery County VIDEO: A collision with a deer in the road turned into a much more grim situation Tuesday morning when a man was impaled by a fence post. It happened south of New Waverly on Highway 75 near Shepard Hill Road around 4 a.m. The driver of a Chevrolet pickup was driving when he hit the animal and ran off the road, according to authorities. That's when he crashed into a fence at a trailer sales company. Firefighters from North Montgomery County Fire and New Waverly found the pickup tangled in the fence and a fence post that had gone completely through the man's body in the abdominal area. The man was able to call 911 himself, according to authorities. It took crews close to 30 minutes to free the man. He had to be transported to Conroe Regional Medical Center with part of the fence still in his body. He was in critical condition, authorities said. KTRK-TV ABC 13 HOUSTON PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

Michigan fire chief begs, 'Guys, don't quit yet' before millage vote triggers possible layoffs It's a sign of our era — when countless Americans distrust government — that firefighters in one of Michigan's most affluent communities worry about a millage vote next month. If most voters in Bloomfield Township vote no, as they did for a police-and-fire measure with a bigger price tag last year, a projected 22 firefighter/paramedics could lose their jobs, Fire Chief Mike Morin says. That fear has pushed younger troops to think about leaving. And because they're highly trained, they'd be snatched up quickly by cities like Sterling Heights, Morin said. Last week, the chief met with employees from all three shifts, imploring them not to leave — not yet — but instead to see what the voters do. Seeing what voters do on March 10 is on the minds of countless public employees, from fire halls to school rooms, as communities across Oakland County and Michigan prepare to approve or defeat tax measures. DETROIT FREE PRESS Firefighters who can sew? Kansas team may get teased but save department time, money When a firefighter rips his or her uniform, repairing it isn't quite as simple as ironing on a patch. Although it used to take weeks or months of waiting and thousands of dollars to repair their gear, the firefighters at the John B. Glaser Fire Station in Shawnee can have everything fixed in a few days. Capt. Andy Fenstermann, who has been a firefighter for Shawnee for seven years, was the first to take on the task of learning to repair firefighting gear. And it's not quite as simple as many might think. At the time, Fenstermann had pants that needed to be fixed. "I actually approached the chief with, ‘Hey, can my mom just fix these?' And he said, ‘No.' So I did a little bit of research and found that most manufacturers for the gear will teach you how to sew and certify you in fixing your own bunker gear for your department, and they'll do it for free," he said. THE KANSAS CITY STAR Firefighter cancer coverage ‘loophole' posed with legislation on its 5th appearance in Virginia Persistence may soon be paying off for firefighters across the Commonwealth. They have pushed for expanded cancer coverage as many are developing it at an high rate. Now, after five years of legislation, this year's bill looks like it will become law. Firefighters said state lawmakers were no longer able to overlook the problem in front of them and that's why they think they are the closest they've ever been to getting it passed. In the Roanoke Valley, some firefighters have been pushing for these changes for nearly a decade. Firefighters face extreme danger on the job and even the best gear in the world can't stop cancer. Kevin Weeks is a retired Roanoke City fire captain and knows it all too well. "Out of the last five years we've had three pass away, and we've had more than that over the last ten years," Weeks said. The data continues to show firefighters are at a big risk. WSLS-TV NBC 10 ROANOKE Mesa is first Arizona fire department to become Certified Autism Center The Mesa Fire and Medical Department has become the first fire team in Arizona to receive the designation of being a Certified Autism Center. The designation was granted by the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards and comes after the staff, firefighters and other first responders at the department received position-specific training to "enhance their understanding and sensitivity when helping individuals with autism or other sensory sensitivities," according to a press release by the organization. The IBCCES website says that Certified Autism Centers must be dedicated to serving individuals with autism, have at least 80% of their staff trained and certified in the field of autism and be committed to ongoing training in autism. IBCCES President Meredith Tekin said that those standards will make a world of difference to people on the autism spectrum in the area. ARIZONA REPUBLIC, AZCENTRAL.COM & KPNX-TV NBC 12 PHOENIX Scholarships for students: Fire department in Alaska helps their staffing by helping students With tight budgets and dwindling amounts of volunteer help, interior fire departments struggle with maintaining staffing. In 2011 the Steese Volunteer Fire Department came up with an idea to help -- they began providing scholarships and a place to live for students who are going to UAF. "We are able to staff two stations, two ambulances, two engines, with these scholarship folks to serve the community for minimal amount of money," said Captain Ruth Church. "If we had this amount of staffing that we were trying to pay for full time, it would be quite a bit more expensive. So by giving them the opportunity to go to school, and live and work at the fire station, it really benefits the community members." Church said in 2005 when she started working at the department, they only had a handful of volunteers and one paid person. Now they have 15 scholarship positions that are at the department full time.
