In first-of-its-kind collaboration, Mexican firefighters will train across border in McAllen VIDEO: The South Texas city of McAllen is offering to train Mexican firefighters in what the mayor calls the first such binational collaboration among fire departments. "This is the first in the country where you have a Mexican fire department coming and training in the United States. So we're really proud of what we're doing," McAllen Mayor Javier Villalobos said Monday afternoon. Villalobos and Carlos Víctor Peña Ortiz, the mayor of the northern Mexican border town of Reynosa, signed a memorandum of understanding at McAllen City Hall, which will allow Reynosa firefighters to train in a new 10,000-square-foot fire training facility that the City of McAllen is building. "It is truly a historic moment what we're doing today. It is something that has not been done in all the United States," Villalobos said. KTSM-TV NBC 9 EL PASO ‘A Win-Win': The program that sent one Lubbock Fire Rescue crew to Childress Deputy Chief of Lubbock Fire Rescue, Nick Wilson, said the key to wildfires is prevention. That's why LFR has four of their own about two hours northeast of town. "The crew that we sent to Childress as part of the TIFMAS team …that stands for the Texas Intrastate Fire Mutual Aid System, described Wilson, "Although it's got fire in its title, it really is an all-hazards agency." Started back in 2007, TIFMAS is a statewide system that sends trained teams from local agencies to help with big natural disasters of all kinds around the Lone Star State. LFR's crew in Childress has been pre-positioned by the Texas A&M Forest Service, which maintains TIFMAS. According to Wilson, this is so the TIFMAS team can respond quickly in case a wildfire breaks out over their two-week deployment. VIDEO: Crews put down raging grain elevator fire in northwestern Minnesota A raging fire at a northwestern Minnesota grain elevator kept crews from at least 17 different departments busy overnight, closing area schools Monday and triggering a request for residents to refrain from using water. Reports of the fire near the city of Hawley began coming in around 11:30 Sunday night and by the time engine crews arrived the structure was engulfed, with flames leaping high into the night sky. A call went out and fire crews responded from nearby communities like Moorhead, Dilworth, Glyndon, Barnesville, Lake Park and Detroit Lakes. Multiple reports said the fire took hours to knock down, putting a significant strain on Hawley's water supply. The city sent out a message asking residents to refrain from using water as much as possible due to the fire, and school was canceled Monday to allow the water tower and system to recharge. KTSM-TV NBC 9 EL PASO Volunteer fire department in West Virginia keeps historic engines in use PHOTOS: The Fire Trucks from Davis Volunteer Fire Department turn heads when they pull up to the scene. Of the current fleet of vehicles at the Fire Hall, three are as comfortable at a car show as they are at the forefront of a call. Davis VFD Chief Alan Cosner and his crew have worked hard to keep their fleet in use, including several antique vehicles. "I like to keep the older trucks because they are so much better built," Cosner said. The latest item of maintenance in the fleet is the replacement of a steel tank with a custom poly tank on the fleet's 1977 Pierce Class A Pumper Truck. According to Cosner, Pro Poly in Davis is using the the existing steel tank to create a mold to form the new poly tank for the truck. The new tank is required due to a leak that has developed in the steel tank, according to Cosner.
