Lewisville fire chief dies Lewisville Fire Chief Tim Tittle has died. He was 63. The Lewisville Fire Fighters Association announced on social media Monday morning that Tittle died overnight. Tittle had served in the Lewisville Fire Department for more than 40 years, and had served as fire chief since 2011. In 2013, he was diagnosed with leukemia. "Chief Tittle was a fighter," the firefighters association said in its Facebook post. "He aggressively battled cancer and beat it back into remission multiple times. Even during the toughest times, his loyalty and dedication to the department and the City of Lewisville never wavered. He loved being our Fire Chief." Local and area officials and fire departments have expressed their sympathies to the Tittle family and the Lewisville Fire Department. CROSSTIMBERSGAZETTE.COM West Mountain Volunteer Fire Department fire chief retires after 40 years on job Representatives from numerous agencies gathered at an East Texas fire department, to honor a man who has given four-decades of service to his community. Well-wishers gathered at West Mountain Volunteer Fire Department, as longtime fire chief Andy Killian decided to step down as top man. Killian has held the position for 40 years and was recognized for his service by numerous agencies that attended. The outgoing chief says he had a lot of help in his 40 years. "Many many old-timers that helped me up as I got involved. Some of them are here today, a lot of them have passed on, but my take on that for staying and doing is I had to pay them old-timers back," he says. Killian says he will still be active, devoting his free time to making wooden toys for his grandchildren. KLTV-TV ABC 7 TYLER Celebration of Life Ceremony for Lubbock Fire Lieutenant Eric Hills: ‘Rest easy, brother' To those who knew him, Eric Hill was fearless, dedicated, kind, loving and hardworking. To those who served with him, he was a leader. To the community he was a hero. Tears were shed and, at times, laughter erupted as stories of Hill's life as a cowboy and a fireman were shared Friday with the thousands of people who gathered at the Rip Griffin Center at the Lubbock Christian University campus for a celebration of life ceremony that preceded his funeral. Hill, a Lubbock Fire Rescue lieutenant, was one of two first-responders killed on Jan. 11 while working a vehicle wreck on icy roads on Interstate 27 north of Lubbock. He was 39. The funeral for Lubbock police officer Nicholas Reyna, 27, is set for Saturday. Another firefighter, 30-year-old Matt Dawson, was critically injured during the incident and remains hospitalized. LUBBOCK AVALANCHE-JOURNAL Related: Firefighters from across state stand watch over Lubbock during Lt. Eric Hill's funeral New exhaust removal system for Wichita Falls firefighters aims to combat health concerns You can smell it as soon as you walk into Wichita Falls Fire Station One: diesel exhaust making its way from the engines, directly to the firefighters. "When you add that to what was already the single biggest risk that was killing firefighters nationwide (heart disease)," said fire chief Ken Prillaman, "it's so imperative that we stay on this track and get these done as soon as we can." Prillaman said the ceilings of the station used to be white, but years and years of diesel exhaust have turned them gray. "That's what makes this a more critical issue for us than others who perhaps work around diesel fumes," he explained. It's why Prillaman said he is so excited about the six exhaust removal systems that will be installed over the next months here. KAUZ-TV CBS 6 WICHITA FALLS San Antonio-based Fire Scene Rehab backing up first responders When first responders are called to an incident like Sunday night's deadly shooting at a River Walk music venue, they are often there for hours on end. In the middle of the night, finding something as simple as a place to rest or even water can be a challenge. That's where Fire Scene Rehab comes in. "It's not something I planned on seeing myself do in the future, but the fact that I get to help out really warms my heart and hopefully the officers here on duty," said Nathan Palacio, an 18-year-old senior from Memorial High School who is one of several volunteers with Fire Scene Rehab. "Anytime there's a big scene – two alarms or more, mass shootings, anything that's going to (last) maybe two hours or more – we want to help them out," said Xavier Lopez, another of Fire Scene Rehab's volunteers. They do that by providing snacks, Gatorade, coffee or even just a place to sit inside a converted 1994 Blue Bird bus. KENS-TV CBS 5 SAN ANTONIO 9/11 Tribute Mural Keeps Heroes Memory Alive At Plano Fire Station 8 What was once a bare wall at a Plano fire station is now a work of art and a tribute to sacrifice. Local artist Michael McPheeters, known as "Mr. Mural," is hand-painting a mural in remembrance of 9/11. He has made a career out of creating murals but said this one is different. "It's pretty heavy," he said of the subject matter. "I think, as an artist, we're storytellers, so it's our responsibility to tell a story and to do it in the right tone." Thus with strokes of a paintbrush or the spritz of spray paint, McPheeters is turning the walls of Plano Fire Station 8 into a 9/11 memorial. Firefighter and veteran Larson Leidig wanted the mural for the next generation of firefighters who were born after 9/11. KTVT-TV CBS 11 FORT WORTH PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

18 firefighters, 1 civilian injured in 5-alarm fire in New York VIDEO: Hundreds of firefighters battled a raging and fast-moving fire that spread through a row of town-homes on Staten Island on Monday. The fire was reported shortly after 3 p.m. on Rensselaer Avenue, and within 30 minutes, a fifth alarm had been sounded as the flames quickly spread. Officials say 18 firefighters and one civilian suffered injuries in the fire, but all the injuries were believed to be minor. Heavy smoke could be seen pouring from the row of connected homes with firefighters trying to contain the fire from the ground and the roof. The FDNY said wood construction in the attics allowed the fire to spread quickly through the roof. Reise Carjullo was in the shower when he first noticed the smoke. But then he remembered his brother was still upstairs and sound asleep. WABC-TV ABC 7 NEW YORK California fire station closes for 6 weeks due to personnel shortage La Verne Fire Station No. 3 at 5100 Esperanza Drive, which serves neighborhoods in the area, will be closed for about six weeks until the city can hire more firefighters, Mayor Don Kendrick said Monday, Jan. 20. La Verne Firefighters' Association, Local 3624, posted information about the closure Friday on social media. The Facebook post, which received hundreds of comments and nearly 150 shares, did not mention that the station would reopen in a few weeks but suggested that it was permanently closed. That's because there is no guarantee the station will reopen, said Andy Glaze, the union's president and a captain at the La Verne Fire Department. Three new recruits are not going to fix the problem of sagging morale, lack of a safe work environment and a failure on the city's part to retain firefighters, he said Monday. INLAND VALLEY DAILY BULLETIN - METERED SITE Nearly 1,000 Texas Firefighters Get Training to Recognize Suicide Risk VIDEO: It's a startling statistic - since 2015, more firefighters and police officers are dying by suicide than in the line of duty, according to a report. In January, nearly 1,000 Fort Worth firefighters will take a course to learn to spot the signs of someone at risk for suicide. According to a report published in 2017 by the Ruderman Family Foundation, almost 250 firefighters and police officers died by suicide in 2016 across the United States, as compared to just over 200 that died in the line of duty. Kristi Wiley is teaching Fort Worth Firefighters how to ask questions, and save lives, with QPR training. The acronym stands for "question, persuade, refer." "We need to ask the question, if we think someone is struggling, then we want to persuade them to stay alive," said Kristi Wiley, program director for the Jordan Elizabeth Harris Foundation. KXAS-TV NBC 5 DALLAS-FORT WORTH More consolidation may be the answer to a lack of volunteer firefighters in rural Iowa Two decades ago, a machine shed fire in rural Plymouth County might have taken one, maybe two, fire departments to put out the flames. But in 2019, it took five just to get enough manpower and water to put out the fire. No single department had enough available volunteers or resources. "The days where the butcher, the baker, and the horseshoe maker ran down the street when the fire whistle blew in town, that doesn't happen anymore," Le Mars Fire Chief David Schipper said. Instead, fire departments unable to fill part-time slots from within their own areas are partnering with neighboring communities. The approach, similar to that used in rural school districts, widens the pool of available volunteers who can respond to emergency calls. Indeed, consolidation may be the future of firefighting in Iowa. Many departments are sharing spaces, equipment and even fire chiefs. Some have simply combined departments as a whole. DES MOINES REGISTER U.S. House bill aims to help veteran firefighters A bill has been introduced in the U.S. House that aims to help veteran firefighters. Congresswoman Abigail Spanberger and Congressman Don Bacon (R-Nebraska-02), a U.S. Air Force veteran, introduced the Michael Lecik Military Firefighters Protection Act on Thursday. It aims to provide veteran firefighters with the compensation, health care, and retirement benefits they earned with their military service. The bill is named for Michael Lecik, a Powhatan County resident who was deployed twice as a U.S. Air Force firefighter. According to a release, Lecik was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in Feb. 2019, but the Veterans Health Administration does not cover the treatment costs for such disease because the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs does not often recognize the service connection between firefighting and cancer as a "presumptive service-connected disability" more than a year after active duty. Lecik's service ended in 2008. WVIR-TV NBC/CW+ 29 CHARLOTTESVILLE PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
