Two firefighters briefly trapped during accidental fire at south Austin home VIDEO/PHOTOS: The Austin Fire Department says an accidental fire at a home in south Austin left two firefighters momentarily trapped late Monday night. AFD tweeted they were working the fire around 11:50 p.m. at a home located on Camperdown Elm Drive near South 1st Street. Crews said there were heavy fire conditions when they arrived on scene. AFD tweeted out a video that was shot by a bystander showing massive flames coming from the home. Around 1 a.m., AFD said the fire was under control. The home was vacant for renovations so luckily no one was displaced. Two firefighters were momentarily trapped when the roof collapsed during a fire attack and search at the home. One of the firefighters was treated on scene by Austin-Travis County EMS for a minor injury. KEYE-TV CBS 42 AUSTIN 1 dead, woman and child hospitalized after mobile home catches fire in Harris County, officials say A woman is dead, and two others, including a child, were hospitalized following an accidental house fire in northeast Harris County on Monday. The Harris County Fire Marshal's Office said the deadly incident happened at about 8:16 a.m. at a mobile home in the 4800 block of Collins Road. Westfield Fire Department crews arrived and reportedly found heavy smoke before putting out the fire. In an evening update, officials said the fire was ruled accidental and was caused by an electrical failure outside of the residence. According to investigators, six people lived in the home, though only four were there at the time of the fire. Officials said one of them was able to get out safely, and a woman and child were taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation. They are expected to be OK. Another woman did not make it and was confirmed dead at the scene. KTRK-TV ABC 13 HOUSTON Fire chief: Cigarette ignites natural gas home explosion in Carrollton, 1 injured A suspected natural gas home explosion in Carrollton is believed to have been ignited by a cigarette being lit, according to the fire department. The early-morning blast along Highland Drive off Belt Line Road in Carrollton sent a man to the hospital and led to the temporary evacuation of several homes. Atmos Energy trucks lined parts of the neighborhood Monday morning as technicians ‘work to restore service,' according to a statement released by Atmos Energy representatives. ‘A precautionary evacuation has been lifted,' according to the natural gas distributor. Carrollton Fire Chief Michael Thompson says while the investigation is ongoing, it appears an underground gas leak seeped into the home's sewer pipe and began building up in a bathroom. KXAS-TV NBC 5 FORT WORTH Houston fire: 2-alarm apartment fire displaces several families PHOTO: The Red Cross is assisting several families following a 2-alarm apartment fire on Greens Road in Houston over the weekend. The fire sparked up in the 500 block of Greens Road, just before 5 p.m. Officials said firefighters arrived on the scene within five minutes to find a 2-story apartment building on fire. Nearly 90 personnel were called out to the incident to cut the fire off in the attic. As firefighters were working to ventilate the attic, fire started showing in the area, and they were ordered off the roof. Additional units were requested, and a second alarm was activated. The fire was later extinguished. A total of six units were completely damaged, and 12 others suffered minor damage. Investigators determined the cause of the fire was due to an electrical issue of a light in a closet under a stairway. No injuries were reported. KRIV-TV FOX 26 HOUSTON PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

BUSINESS WIRE Illinois OSHA recommends new firefighter safety measures following Chicago firefighter's death Illinois labor officials are issuing a series of statewide recommendations to improve firefighter safety following a two-year investigation into the death of a Chicago firefighter. Mashawn Plummer, 30, was critically injured the morning of Dec. 16, 2021, while battling an apartment building fire. Just six months after graduating from the Chicago Fire Academy, Plummer died five days after the fire. A civilian woman who was pulled out of the fire also died. Investigators with the Illinois Department of Labor's Division of Occupational Safety and Health (IL OSHA) found the primary cause of Plummer's death was a catastrophic malfunction of his self-contained breathing apparatus. The hose connecting Plummer's mask to his air tank tore in two places, rapidly depleting his only source of breathable air in heavy smoke conditions. With the higher snow levels, rain falling on fresh snow from last week also exacerbated inland flooding concerns. San Diego's mayor declared a state of emergency on Monday as record rainfall pummeled the city. Widespread flash flooding reports came in across the city and county. San Diego's fire department reported 24 water rescues from cars and hundreds from homes, with even more rescues in surrounding areas. San Diego's city website showed more than 70 roads were still either fully or partially covered by floodwaters early Tuesday morning. FOX WEATHER PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
