New Panola County Fire Marshal says job is challenging, rewarding Panola County Fire Marshal and Emergency Management Coordinator Bryan Murff has been in public service since the early 1990s, but he said his newest position in public service has given him a whole new point of view. He had been a county deputy sheriff, worked at the Carthage Fire Department about 12 years and served as a constable. "This is a whole new perspective on law enforcement that we have never had in our county," he said this past week at a Rotary Club of Carthage. In the past, the county has had a part time emergency management staffer. Murff assists with coordinating emergency response operations during incidents and disasters. In Texas, mayors and county judges have responsibility for emergency preparedness and response within their local jurisdictions — and they may appoint an emergency management coordinator to run day-to-day programs. THE PANOLA WATCHMAN Houston Fire Department: Mother, 2-year-old child escape house fire; child transported to hospital A 2-year-old boy is recovering in the hospital after a house fire in north Houston Tuesday, officials with the Houston Fire Department said. HFD was called to a home in the 4500 block of Antha after receiving reports of a house fire and someone suffering from cardiac arrest. According to HFD, when firefighters arrived at the scene, the child and the child's mother were already outside. Officials said they performed CPR on the child and called backup to help put the blaze out. The fire is now extinguished. The child was transported to the hospital, where he is expected to recover, HFD said. The child's father was also in the home at the time of the fire and said he did all he could to save his son. "I put the shirt back in my nose and I pulled the crib all the way to the door so I can just jump in there and grab him and when I jumped in there to grab him," Angel Ruiz told KPRC 2. "When I picked him up, he was just so unconscious." KPRC-TV NBC 2 HOUSTON Port Arthur Fire Department taking preventive measures to decrease risk of cancer The end of January marks the end of Firefighter Cancer Awareness Month, but awareness and safety still lives at the top of minds all year round. The Port Arthur Fire Department is working hard every day to keep one another safe. The fires firefighters fight release toxic chemicals which make their risk of cancer a lot higher. While firefighters understand the risks that come with their job, city leaders are being proactive in protecting the heroes who work everyday to serve and protect citizens. Port Arthur Fire Captain Michael Adaway stresses the fact that his team does everything they can to limit exposure. "But we're still most likely gonna have some type of exposure. As far as what we can do. We can just take our precautions. You know that's why we have all this type of gear," Adaway said. It all starts with what they wear. KBMT-TV ABC/NBC 12 BEAUMONT Space heaters cause 2 fires, Austin Fire Department says Austin firefighters say a fire that destroyed a detached garage in East Austin this morning has been ruled accidental – a space heater was located too close to combustibles. It happened around 4:30 a.m. in the 9800 block of Colfax Drive. AFD says the garage was fully engulfed in flames when they arrived, but fortunately they were able to put the fire out before it spread to the home. Austin firefighters were also working a fire in the 7000 block Carwill Dr. around 7:30 a.m. They say that fire was also caused by a space heater located too close to combustibles. The fire started in a shed attached to the back of a home and extended into the attic. Two adults and two children are displaced and multiple chickens died in a coop. KTBC FOX 7 AUSTIN Explosion reported at Kinder Morgan Plant in Snyder An explosion was reported at Kinder Morgan Plant in Snyder Tuesday morning. KTAB-TV CBS 32 ABILENE Crews battle 2 San Antonio house fires amid freezing temperatures It was a cold night across San Antonio which means it was a busy night for firefighters, as they had at least two fires to respond to within an hour of each other. VIDEO: Helmet footage of a Virginia fire department tackling catering company fire We are now seeing what firefighters saw as they worked to keep downtown Bedford from going up in flames on Friday. ABC13 received helmet camera footage from the fire department that shows how crews got the fire at the Sister to Sister Custom Catering and Café under control in 50 minutes on Friday. Crews fought the fire from the ground and the rooftops. Town of Bedford Fire Chief Todd Stone said their main plan was to cut the fire off so that it wouldn't spread up the block. "If this fire gets out of control and we can't stop it quickly enough, every building we lose we impact people's livelihoods," Stone said. He said the biggest thing is to get above and below the fire and they were fortunate to have the manpower to do that. "We had six firefighters on our ladder and the first arriving engine had four and our second engine had four," Stone said. WSET-TV ABC 13 LYNCHBURG Committee on Public Safety OKs ordinance to protect Chicago Fire Department paramedics 'taking a beating' Amid warnings that Chicago Fire Department paramedics are "taking a literal beating at the hands of their patients," a City Council committee on Monday answered the alarm. The Committee on Public Safety unanimously approved an ordinance championed by Ald. Matt O'Shea (19th) at the behest of the Chicago Firefighters Union Local 2. It would create a special category of crime for assaulting CFD paramedics, private ambulance workers, American Red Cross or any other emergency medical services and disaster response personnel in Chicago. If convicted, an offender would face up to 180 days in jail and fines as high as $1,000. Chicago is in the middle of a "mental health crisis" and paramedics are "sadly, on the front lines" of that crisis, said Joe Senorski, director of political action for Local 2. WLS-TV ABC 7 CHICAGO Oregon fire engine restored to preserve town's history VIDEO/PHOTOS: A piece of Albany history is out for public viewing after being hidden away for 20 years. The restoration of the 1925 Seagrave engine was an arduous process that took gallons of paint and even more patience. Inside what was once the old museum at Fire Station 12, Larry Allen and Brian Vorderstrasse put the finishing touches on the fire engine. The room smells of cleaning agents and gasoline. Paint brushes, rags, measuring tape, stencils and toolboxes with wrenches pool over the tables and onto the ground of their workstation. The fire engine sits proudly, commanding space in the small museum-turned-workshop. For the past three years the two retired firefighters have worked to restore the engine to its glory. "It's important because it's preserving history," said Vorderstrasse, sporting orange gloves and a shirt splattered with grease. ALBANY DEMOCRAT-HERALD - METERED SITE IAFF mounts legal push against ‘forever chemicals': ‘It stops now' The International Association of Fire Fighters called on Monday for the elimination of protective gear that contains "forever chemicals," saying swift regulatory action is needed to address the toxic substances. The union — which has more than 333,000 members — announced that it has retained the services of three nationally recognized law firms to pursue these goals, and to help members and their families seek compensation for related illnesses. The toxins in question — per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) — are known for their presence in both jet fuel firefighting foam and the gear worn by firefighters and rescue workers. They are also common in a variety of household items, such as nonstick pans, cosmetics and waterproof apparel. These cancer-linked compounds are notorious for their ability to linger in the human body and the environment. WDAF-TV FOX 4 KANSAS CITY These benefits will disappear when Biden ends the COVID national and public health emergencies in May President Joe Biden intends to end the Covid-19 national and public health emergencies on May 11, the White House said Monday. That means that many Americans could have to start paying for Covid-19 testing and treatment after the declarations cease. The White House, in a statement of administration policy announcing opposition to two House Republican measures to end the emergencies, said the national emergency and public health emergency authorities declared in response to the pandemic would each be extended one final time to May 11. "This wind down would align with the Administration's previous commitments to give at least 60 days' notice prior to termination of the (public health emergency)," the statement said. The public health emergency has enabled the government to provide many Americans with Covid-19 tests, treatments and vaccines at no charge, as well as offer enhanced social safety net benefits, to help the nation cope with the pandemic and minimize its impact.
