500-acre wildfire destroys several homes in Palo Pinto County VIDEO/PHOTOS: The hot dry weather is helping to fuel several wildfires in North Texas. The Texas A&M Forest Service said fires are burning in Kaufman, Boseque, Somervell and Palo Pinto counties. Near Possum Kingdom Lake in Palo Pinto County, an extremely destructive wildfire has already destroyed waterfront homes and lake houses. At least check, it had burned at least 500 acres and was about 10% contained. People who live in the area were told to evacuate. That evacuation order was lifted overnight. "In our region, wildfire is becoming a rapidly, ever-present word," said Adam Turner with Texas A&M Forest Service. Reports about the fire came in around 1 p.m. Monday afternoon. Two reporters for area online news outlets were out on the lake around the time. KDFW-TV FOX 4 DALLAS Chalk Mountain Fire Now 4K Acres in Somervell County VIDEOS/PHOTO: As the large 1148 Fire destroys homes and prompts evacuations near Possum Kingdom Lake, about 55 miles to the southeast there is another large wildfire that grew in size overnight Monday. The Chalk Mountain Fire, burning in an area between Dinosaur Valley State Park and Chalk Mountain, is about 45 miles southwest of Fort Worth and sending huge plumes of smoke into the air over Somervell County. As of 7 a.m. Tuesday the Texas A&M Forest Service reported the fire had been very active overnight and spotted over multiple areas of Farm-to-Market Road 205. The Texas A&M Fire Service said early Tuesday that the fire has consumed about 4,000 acres and was about 10% contained. Texas A&M Forest Service said hundreds of firefighters, including many volunteer departments, are in the area working the fire. KXAS-TV NBC 5 FORT WORTH Fort Worth Firefighter Overcome by Heat While Working Two House Fires Fort Worth firefighter was overcome by heat while battling a fire that spread to two houses overnight. Craig Trojacek, public information officer for the Fort Worth Fire Department, said the firefighter was treated at the scene and did not require hospitalization. "He was treated on the scene, sounded like just kinda being overheated. You know, with the Texas heat going on right now, it's pretty easy to do especially when you're working as hard as these guys are right now," Trojacek said. Firefighters were called to Arbuckle Drive just before 3:30 a.m. Monday where two homes had caught fire. Firefighters had to decide which fire to start fighting first before backup arrived, but Trojacek said after the rest of the company showed up they quickly got both fires under control. Seven people inside the first home got out safely with their two dogs. KXAS-TV NBC 5 FORT WORTH Trinity County sheriff says Walker County fire over 1,000 acres, heading toward Trinity River PHOTOS: Sheriff Woody Wallace took to his Facebook page on Monday to let people know that the sheriff's office will be charging people who disregard the burn ban that is in place in the county. He also gave an update on the Walker County fire. At around 8:30, Sheriff Wallace said the Walker County fire is expected to jump the Trinity River into Trinity and/or Houston County. This fire is over 1,000 acres, he said, and is moving quickly toward the Trinity River. Wallace said the area it's most likely to cross is between Deep River Subdivision and FM 3478. If you live in this area stay alert and watch for updates. Wallace said Nixle alerts will be sent in the event of an emergency. In the event of an evacuation, shelters will be opened, he added. KTRE-TV ABC 9 LUFKIN McLennan County fire departments low on bottled water during dangerous heat The triple-digit heat is causing a shortage of water for local fire departments--not the water they need to fight fires and save property, but the water they need to save themselves. "Every first-responder organization, especially the volunteer fire departments, are needing water," said Luke Rawlings, President of the Robinson Volunteer Fire Department. "We go through it fast." Firefighter turnout gear can weigh upwards of 45 pounds--when you mix in 105 degree heat (the high temperature in Robinson Monday) and a 1,500 degree wildfire...the temperature inside turnouts can reach a dangerous 160 degrees. "Dehydration is no joke, heat exhaustion is no joke, and we have had a firefighter go down because of it several years ago," said Rawlings. "This water means everything to us, this is our hydration, it's our rehab." KWTX-TV CBS 10 WACO Midland Fire Department to host Push-In Ceremony A long-standing tradition will continue for Midland Fire Department at Station #11 on Briarwood Rd. this week. VIDEO: Building collapses in Ohio with firefighter inside A building in Columbus, Ohio, partially collapsed Monday afternoon while a firefighter was inside during an inspection. No injuries were reported in the collapse, including to the firefighter. A business that operated on the ground floor, at 1032 East Long Street, was closed Monday. The owner of the business lived in a different part of the building, but was not inside when it happened, fire officials said. Photos and video showed the collapse started along the back wall before a corner of the structure gave way. Columbus fire and police had multiple units on the scene during and after the collapse. Chief Jeffrey Geitter of the Columbus Division of Fire said a building inspector was checking another building nearby when he noticed a section of the back wall had given way and called firefighters. WCMH-TV NBC 4 COLUMBUS Los Angeles: MLB roasted after nearly setting Home Run Derby participants on fire during introductions PHOTOS: It helps when batters in the Home Run Derby catch fire during their rounds. MLB nearly took that too literally. As the derby participants were announced at Dodger Stadium, the pyrotechnic jets were set off all around, with one burst shooting high into the sky behind the stage, appearing to nearly set Ronald Acuña Jr. on fire. MLB certainly pulled out all the stops for the introduction of each of the players. There was a DJ, dramatic introductions for each player and smoke machines as each came out of their entrances. Once all the players were on stage, the presentation was taken to the next level. There were fire jets on the backdrop of the stage as they waited for one another, and for group shots. Of course, with nearly setting one of the contestants on fire, MLB found itself getting roasted online. THE SPORTING NEWS VIDEO: Firefighter recovering after SUV lands on him during rescue attempt in New York City An SUV rolled over onto a firefighter who was trying to rescue the driver and his son after a crash in New York City. The initial collision happened Sunday afternoon on 11th Avenue at West 42nd Street in Manhattan. The two-vehicle crash involved a BMW SUV and a Volvo sedan. Randi and Matthew Rahn said they were stopped at a red light in their Volvo when the SUV just landed on top of their vehicle. "I thought it was an explosion," Randi said. "It was a terrible, terrible loud crash." Cameras captured the BMW teetering on the Volvo. Good Samaritan Ben Arias jumped into action, trying to help the couple, as well as the occupants of the BMW, identified as a father and son, get out. "For the BMW side, I told them 'whatever you do, don't get out through the passenger side," Arias said. Randi and Matthew managed to make it out of their Volvo and somehow walked away without a scratch WPVI-TV ABC 6 PHILADELPHIA Related with Video: Firefighter Who Saved Tourists After Boat Capsized Is Saved Himself After SUV Rolls Onto Him Traveling EMS memorial makes rare stop in West Virginia VIDEO: A traveling EMS memorial stopped Monday in the Ohio Valley on its trek across the country. "We realized how impactful that is to the honorees families when they get to see all of this," said Jana Williams, president of the National EMS Memorial Service. The memorial made its way to Follansbee on Monday, one stop on its trip that began in Texas a few days ago and will end in Arlington, Va. at week's end. "Next weekend, we're going to pay homage to 72 EMS providers that lost their lives in the line of duty over the last year," Williams said. EMS personnel from Ohio, West Virginia, and even a medical helicopter crew from Pittsburgh, visited the memorial on Monday. The National EMS Memorial Service was formed in 1991 and centers around the Tree of Life Memorial. Each year, leaves are added, each for someone who died in the line of duty. The leaves include a name, agency, state and last call date, something very important to many. WTOV-TV NBC/FOX 9 STEUBENVILLE PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
