Wildfire engulfs suburban Dallas County homes VIDEO: What started as a grass fire in suburban Dallas turned into a devastating blaze, torching 10 to 20 acres and damaging more than two dozen homes, officials said. The fire ripped through a neighborhood of Balch Springs Monday, after someone mowed an area of tall grass or brush, known as "brush hogging." "The fire started from someone brush hogging in the field behind the homes," Balch Springs Fire Marshal Sean Davis told CNN on Monday. "He hit some debris in the field that caused a spark. The spark set the cut grass on fire." Nearby residents were evacuated in the suburb about 15 miles southeast of Dallas. Davis said the blaze damaged 26 homes. Nine are a "total loss," he said. At least six fire departments helped extinguish the flames by Monday night, Davis said. No injuries were reported. KTEN-TV NBC/CW+/ABC 10 ADA Crews spend hours battling large fire at church in Beaumont VIDEO/PHOTOS: Firefighters were called to battle a fire at Central City Baptist Church in Beaumont late Monday night. The call regarding the fire came in shortly after 10 p.m., according to Beaumont Police Department call logs. The call came from the 1700 block of Franklin Street and Avenue E. A 12News crew at the scene saw a large amount of flames and smoke coming from the building. A witness at the scene said the church was abandoned, but members were working to reopen it. Neighbor Major Goldman said the church was a staple to the community and he and his family used to go for bible services every week. "It's a sad day for our community. This fire just came out of no where. I went to the car to get something out of the car and I smell something and about two to three minutes later this is what happens," he said. KBMT-TV ABC/NBC 12 BEAUMONT Fire crews attend annual Fire Training School Municipal Week in College Station Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service (TEEX) starts its 93rd annual Municipal Fire Training School at Brayton Fire Training Field this week. These events will take place on Tuesday, from 9 a.m. until noon. The field is located at 1595 Nuclear Science Road in College Station. Nearly 900 municipal and volunteer firefighters from around Texas and from other states will attend. Participants will choose from more than 30 courses – including wildland firefighting, basic emergency telecommunications, automobile extrication and rope rescue. TEEX says that because all wildland fires begin as local fires, volunteer and municipal firefighters are first to respond and the first line of defense against wildfires. A safe, capable, and equipped fire service is essential to handling fires at the local level and decreasing the amount of state assistance needed. KWKT-TV FOX 44 WACO San Gabriel Fire: Wildfire nearly contained, but still remains threat in Williamson County Swirls of ash and smoke could be seen Monday morning spinning out of the burn zone along the north fork of the San Gabriel River between Georgetown and Liberty Hill. Fire crews spent the day attacking hotspots that remained within the San Gabriel Wildfire-451 acre scare. Monday afternoon, Walter Flocke with the Texas A&M Forest Service said the fire was 90% contained. "That 90% containment means that the incident commander is now sure that 90% of those containment lines constructed by our dozer crews will be able to hold and not have any fire escape outside those lines," said Flocke. The fire may have been ignited by a property owner who was using a cutting torch. An official ruling isn't expected until Wednesday, but Liberty Hill Fire Marshall Michael Dickens did offer a warning. KTBC-TV FOX 7 AUSTIN Pickleball, basketball gold for Austin Fire at Texas Firefighter Olympics The Austin Fire Department competed in the Texas Firefighter Olympics last week and won gold in two of the games. AFD is now home to the best firefighter basketball team and firefighter pickleball team in Texas. The Texas Firefighter Olympics is an event where firefighters from across the state come together to compete in a bunch of competitive sporting events to raise money for different charities. This year's games were in New Braunfels. "With it being so close here in New Braunfels, we have just a huge showing from the Austin Fire Department in the Olympics," said Martin Robertson, an AFD Firefighter. Robertson competed in this year's games and also coordinated Pickleball to be played. It was the first time the sport was played at the Texas Firefighter Olympics. KTBC-TV FOX 7 AUSTIN At least 25 units damaged during apartment fire in Houston VIDEO: Several residents are left without a home Monday night after an apartment in the Greenspoint area caught on fire, destroying several units. Houston Fire Department responded to the fire near the 13030 block of North Borough around 6 p.m. HFD said no firefighters or civilians were reported injured during the fire, but about 25 units at the apartment complex have suffered damage. HFD said no firefighters or civilians have been reported injured, but approximately 25 units have been damaged. The cause of the fire has yet to be determined, but officials said the focus Monday night remains on making sure the fire doesn't reignite or spread. Red Cross also responded to the scene and is helping residents who were affected. It's not clear how many people have been affected. KPRC-TV NBC 2 HOUSTON PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

Video shows fiery crash; Lamborghini goes airborne in Florida A Lamborghini burst into flames after running past a stop sign, crashing into a vehicle, and going airborne to collide with a home's roof and wall. Clarence Middleton said he was in his backyard when he saw "a big truck" flying towards him with "a bunch of debris and dirt flying right behind it." Middleton ran towards the mangled Lamborghini to help the driver. "I pulled him out and laid him on the ground," Middleton said. "They got up; they left. And then the truck caught on fire." Mohammad Iqbal was inside the other car, the one that was hit by the Lamborghini. "I was driving, I had no stop (sign) for me," he said. "My car, it flipped all the way like a circle." Iqbal told Local 10 News' Bridgette Matter that neighbors pulled him out of his car that that his injuries are minor. He said it could have been much worse. WPLG-TV ABC 10 MIAMI Maryland Firefighters Build Skills for Firefighting at Sea PHOTOS: "Every Sailor a Damage Controlman," goes the adage for seagoing personnel, referring to every Sailor's responsibility in responding to emergencies aboard the ship. Firefighters at NAS Patuxent River took that to heart when they completed shipboard firefighting training July 13-16, despite being a station on a shore-based air installation. "After hearing of the events taking place in San Diego with the USS Bonhomme Richard, Patuxent River Fire and Emergency Services wanted to ensure our personnel is at a state of readiness if an incident similar to that event ever took place on our facility," said Fire Capt. James Barnes, Naval District Washington Fire Department – NAS Patuxent River. "Our firefighters pride themselves at always staying at a high state of readiness and will do what it takes to ensure we continue to be ready for any emergency that may take place at Patuxent River, Webster Field, or to our surrounding mutual aid partners." THE SOUTHERN MARYLAND CHRONICLE Township in Michigan dedicates new firehouse VIDEO: Alpine Township firefighters have "officially" moved into their new home. While they've been operating out of the new Station One since May, the facility was dedicated on Friday. Located on Henze Drive, behind the Alpine Avenue Sam's Club, the $3 million firehouse replaces cramped quarters and gives the department room to grow. The station features many firehouse traditions, like the large kitchen table. The table is custom-made by Ridgeline Woodcraft in Alpine and features the department's new logo. "Anyone who understands fire and fire history knows that a lot happens around the dinner table," Deputy Fire Chief Jeremy Kelly said. There are also several modern amenities such as separate rooms that have replaced barrack-style sleeping areas for firefighters. WOOD-TV NBC 8 GRAND RAPIDS These Are the Five States With No Known Monkeypox Cases There are only five U.S. states where no monkeypox cases have been detected according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The viral disease has swept across the world in an unprecedented outbreak affecting people in countries outside of West and Central Africa, where it is usually confined to, with no travel links to either. Globally there had been more than 18,000 confirmed cases as of July 25, almost all of which were in countries that had not historically reported monkeypox. The U.S. has seen 3,846 cases reported so far. As of July 25 monkeypox had been detected in every U.S. state except Alaska, Montana, Wyoming, Maine and Vermont—though it's possible there are positive cases in these states that have not been detected. CDC data shows the state with the most cases is New York with 990, followed by California with 356 and Illinois with 344. A state-by-state count can be found on the CDC's website.
