Dramatic video shows moment fuel tanker explodes in Crowell, injures several VIDEO: Multiple people were hurt after a fuel tanker caught fire and exploded on Sunday near Crowell, Texas. Crowell is about 80 miles west of Wichita Falls. Foard County Sheriff Mike Brown told WFAA that the truck driver and a couple of volunteer firefighters were injured in the incident, but their injuries were minor. A bystander captured on video the dramatic moment the tanker exploded, which the Crowell Volunteer Fire Department posted to its Facebook page. The video, which lasts about 10 seconds, starts after the tanker has already caught fire. About three or four seconds in, an object can be seen flying to the left, almost like a rocket, as the fire turns into an explosion. That was the fuel tank, Brown said. After it flies out of the frame, the flames and smoke billow into a mushroom cloud-like formation before the video ends. WFAA-TV ABC 8 DALLAS Devoted to battling disasters: Emergency services training center dedicated in Karnes City After a 29-year wait, a yearlong delay because of COVID-19 and a two-week delay because of rain, community members and local leaders were finally able to gather to celebrate the dedication of the emergency services training center at 1026 E. Main St. in Karnes City. "This is a big day for local fire and emergency response personnel," Karnes City Fire Chief Charlie Malik said at the June 2 ceremony. "A lot of hard work went into this and we're proud of it. We appreciate all the support we've had and all the contributions that have been made to make this facility a reality." A land donation in 1992 by the Karnes City Chamber of Commerce provided the location for the center. "The chamber gave us this property as a place to train, but we were never able to build it into what we wanted until recently," Malik said. KARNES COUNTYWIDE Nederland reaches agreements with police, fire unions New three- and five-year deals, respectively, with The City of Nederland and police and fire department unions have positioned the community for sustained and excellent service, lead officials say. City Manager Chris Duque thanked the police union and the fire union for what he termed as mostly smooth negotiations. "There are always going to be a few bumps in the road when you are negotiating," Duque said. "I think everybody took the time to walk through the arguments and to try and see both sides of the situation. I think both agreements are fair to our employees and also fair to the taxpayers." Nederland Police Chief Gary Porter told Port Arthur Newsmedia the city made a good offer to a "bunch of good police officers" in order to keep a quality team in place. "The whole agreement in its entirety is a good thing," Porter said. PORT ARTHUR NEWS Huntsville: Building for the next generation of firefighters A new multi-million dollar fire station will aim to improve response times in the heart of Huntsville and help train the firefighters of tomorrow. The new Fire Station No. 2 in the 2100 block of Sam Houston Avenue replaces an old station that was originally built at a city swimming pool in 1939. It was renovated and utilized as a fire station from 1974 construction began on the new facility in 2019. The new facility was showcased during a grand opening ceremony on Monday. "This is a great day for the city of Huntsville and the Huntsville Fire Department. This fire station is going to be an awesome facility that will serve the city for years to come," Fire Chief Greg Mathis said. The 16,750 square-foot facility includes five large truck bays, a three-story training tower, administrative offices and sleeping quarters. The station also incorporates the past with modern day technology. HUNTSVILLE ITEM Update: 28 hours needed to 'terminate' propane threat in Port Neches At approximately 8 a.m. Sunday, the Port Neches Fire Department responded to a report of a two-vehicle crash involving a large propane tank at Young's Tobacco, 1219 Magnolia Ave. in Port Neches. First responders noted no injuries from the motorists involved. However, a 1,000-gallon propane tank was damaged during the crash and appeared to be leaking. The Port Neches Fire Department responded to vehicle crash at approximately 9 a.m. Sunday. "Firefighters quickly began suppressing the flammable vapors with hose lines being released to minimize the chances of an ignition," a Port Neches Fire Department released said Monday afternoon. Port Arthur Fire Department's Hazmat Team, along with local propane distributors representatives, were called for assistance. Fire crews worked close to 28 hours to terminate the threat. WFAA-TV ABC 8 DALLAS Female firefighters in Florida hope to inspire next generation They may not be the first, but the 10 women who make up Clearwater Fire and Rescue's team are certainly blazing the trail. The fire department recently highlighted their 10 female fire personnel – or "firemedics," as they call themselves. "I love working with people, I love being that person people call," said Nina Borders, who has been with the department for four years. According to WomeninFire's website, some 11,000 women in the U.S. work as career firefighters and officers. But women only make up less than five percent of the fire service in America – a startling statistic, but one that Stephanie Nuszkowski doesn't think about. "I don't think every girl can do this job. I also don't think every guy can do this job," she offered. "I just think it's person to person and you're either cut out for it or you're not." WTVT-TV FOX 13 TAMPA Old Helmet In Alaska Returns To Morris Plains Fire Department in New Jersey PHOTOS: After somehow getting all the way to Alaska, a piece of Morris Plains Fire Department gear is finally home. Some older items recently returned to the department, including a helmet found at a transportation museum in Anchorage. The Morris Plains Fire Department isn't sure how it ended up in Alaska, but now it's back. They also received a Morris Plains Fire Association letter dated July 8, 1921. It was found on the front lawn of a Reading, Pennsylvania, home. The letter will turn 100 next month. MORRISTOWN PATCH Why Firefighters Stopped Putting Water on Illinois Chemical Plant Fire As a fire continues to burn at a chemical plant in suburban Rockton, Kirk Wilson, chief of the Rockton Fire Protection District, says that firefighters stopped putting water on the fire, fearing that water run-off could carry chemicals into the nearby Rock River. "We stopped some of the water suppression and some of the fire suppression, and we went ahead and let the product burn off due to the fact that the Rock River sits just west of Chemtool, (approximately) 500 yards away," he said. "We were extremely concerned that would turn into an environmental challenge later on down the road. "Officials say that the fire could potentially burn for several days due to the chemicals inside the plant, but that the blaze is contained to one part of the facility at this time, minimizing the risk of it spreading. WMAQ-TV NBC 5 CHICAGO Delaware General Assembly task force gives recommendations on recruiting more volunteer firefighters The Delaware General Assembly is aiming to help with what volunteer fire departments say is a struggle to get new members. A task force has come up with ten new recommendations and new programs to attract and retain more volunteer firefighters. Among those recommendations, develop a recruitment and retention training class at the Delaware State Fire School, and establish an program that would assign full-time members to companies in all three counties. The task force also recommended adding a training administrator to the Delaware State Fire School to manage that program, and expanding the Sussex County Operation GEM cadet firefighter program for children ages 10-15 to all school districts. The task force also recommended launching a volunteer firefighter recruitment website and marketing program.
