Lubbock Fire Lieutenant Eric Hill memorialized in song written by fellow firefighter On January 11, 2020, three Lubbock first responders were hit while working an icy crash. Lubbock Fire Lt. Eric Hill and Lubbock Police Officer Nicholas Reyna gave their lives protecting others. In the year and a half since, the community has found ways to celebrate the sacrifice of those who risk it all to keep others safe. Now, a new memorial joins those; a song in memory of Lt. Hill, written by a Lubbock firefighter. The lyrics to the song, 'When Heroes Get Their Wings', "a cowboy's heart and a servants hand, God must have needed another good man" were brought to life by firefighter Jared Faubus and musician Derek Chennault. The intention was to honor the themes of Lt. Hill's life; a great firefighter, a passionate cowboy and a dedicated father to his twin girls. "The song kind of has a lot to do with his two passions. The cowboy life and the firefighter life," Faubus said. KJTV FOX 34 LUBBOCK Family recovering from COVID-19 thanks San Antonio Fire Department for saving their lives during winter storm As many continue to recover from the winter storm, one San Antonio family is saying a prayer of thanks. In the midst of the snow and ice, we saw first responders navigating dangerous roads, risking their lives to save someone else's. But it's what we didn't see, that made Veronica Degollado reach out to KENS. When the severe cold weather swept over San Antonio, Degollado and her son had just left the hospital. She said her son who is 31-years-old and autistic and herself both needed oxygen while they recovered from COVID-19. But then, the power went out, and their oxygen was running low. "It was very scary because the electricity kept turning off and on, somebody always had to be awake and alert," said Degollado. "We were living in fear." KENS-TV CBS 5 SAN ANTONIO Both Bryan, College Station fire departments deal with flooding damage following winter storm Bryan and College Station Fire Departments are still dealing with issues from last week's winter weather. Pipes burst at fire stations in both cities causing a messy cleanup inside. Fans are blowing to dry out floors in the dormitories, halls and weight room at College Station Fire Station Number 3 on Barron Road. "We had a frozen pipe, a frozen water line. The water line was insulated and it still got cold enough to freeze and to burst," said Captain Stuart Marrs of the College Station Fire Department. "So while the crews were out running calls they were going to call to call, back to back to back, a water line here at the station broke," explained Marrs. "They finally made it back to the station. They found several inches of water on the ground they immediately had to start cleaning up so they called the city facilities and city utility people to come out and help," he said. KBTX-TV CBS 3 BRYAN Plano Fire Chief Makes Good on Tradition Following COVID-19 Illness The fire chief in Plano is back on the job after beating COVID-19, and he did something good to celebrate his return. "I was at home recovering and still on oxygen, and I told Rosemary when I get well, I'm taking ice cream to all the guys," said Sam Greif. And he did just that. Chief Greif and his wife Rosemary delivered ice cream to all 13 fire stations to make good on a tradition that when Plano firefighters get on TV, they treat the others to ice cream. Greif was on TV all over the country last month when he left Medical City Plano after more than two weeks fighting COVID-19 there. "The real story should be, '57-year-old man went to the hospital with COVID, a very serious health condition, and angels dressed in scrubs delivered not just world-class health care, but they became your surrogate family,'" Greif told NBC 5 a couple of days after his release. Firefighter Injured Battling 3-Alarm Blaze in Massachusetts; 6 Adults, 4 Kids Displaced VIDEO: A firefighter was injured while battling a 3-alarm blaze in Boston's Roxbury neighborhood on Monday afternoon. The fire was first reported around 5 p.m. in a 6-family home at the corner of Southwood and Edgewood streets. Heavy flames and smoke could be seen upon arrival. Aerial video from the scene showed numerous ladder trucks and other fire apparatus surrounding the scene. All 10 residents -- six adults and four children -- made it out safely, but one woman was wheeled away on a stretcher and taken to an area hospital for evaluation. A firefighter was also hospitalized after being hit by falling chimney bricks. "I was driving down the street and I smelled the smoke and I looked up to see where the smoke was coming from and the house was on fire," said Thelbert Foster, a witness to the blaze. "So first thing I did was call the fire department and they came out here pretty quickly." WBTS-TV NBC 10 BOSTON Colorado firefighter inspires change for colleagues battling breast cancer VIDEO: All Colorado firefighters who are diagnosed with breast cancer will now receive benefits from the Colorado Firefighter Heart and Cancer Benefits (CFHCB) Trust, thanks to a Westminster fire lieutenant who appealed the denial of her claim. "I needed to find the thing that will show them that breast cancer is a firefighter's disease," Lt. Tracy Post told 9NEWS. "As exhausted as I was, I knew if I didn't do it, somebody else was going to have to. I was just frustrated enough at the situation that I was like, well, I'm going to find a way to make this happen." Post was diagnosed with stage two invasive ductal carcinoma in 2019; a type of breast cancer that forms in the milk duct of a breast and can invade into the surrounding breast tissue. It is also a type of cancer that is not covered for firefighter benefits in Colorado. "Quite often we do not know what we do not know," Westminster Fire Chief Doug Hall told us. KUSA-TV NBC 9 DENVER Insurance group donates vintage fire engine to New York fire department VIDEO: A 115-year-old fire engine has been on display downtown since 2006, but today it returned to its rightful owner, the Utica Fire Department. It was the very first fire engine the city ever purchased back in 1906 and It took 3 horses to move the engine. It was sold for scrap in 1938, but was never dismantled. Since then, it's been on display in the office of Utica National Insurance Group. The Group recently decided to donate the engine to the Utica Fire Department. On Saturday members of the department were there to help transport the engine to its new home. "This was a fire apparatus that was purchased by the city of Utica in 1906. And it was in service until the department was motorized in 1917. So it's a huge part of our department history," said Deputy Fire Chief John Kelly. The engine was taken by truck to the Utica Fire Academy on Bleecker Street. Officials with the city hope to get the engine moving again when the next parade takes place in Utica. WTOL-TV CBS 11 TOLEDO North Carolina DOT training program that simulates crash scene for first responders wins award VIDEO: Thanks to efforts in recent years to educate drivers, we've all become familiar with the problem of work zone deaths and injuries. Many public safety workers are also killed at the scene of accidents often by drivers who are paying attention to the crash rather than the road. That's why the North Carolina Department of Transportation's development of a hands-on training facility that engineers expect will save lives at accident scenes has won an award. "Whenever you get called to a highway wreck it's always dangerous. You never really know who's coming, who's going, who can see you, who can't see you," Garner Firefighter and emergency medical technician Tim Inman said. We caught up with Inman at the NCDOT's new Traffic Incident Management Training Track where he was taking part in a demonstration of the facility. WTVD-TV ABC 11 DURHAM PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
